This image of the Yellow River Delta and its surrounding basin was acquired on 08 February 2026 by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission.
Earth’s river deltas, home to about 5% of the global population and some of the world’s major cities, are experiencing subsidence, which exacerbates the risks from sea-level rise.
In deltas such as the Chao Phraya in Thailand, the Mekong in Vietnam and the Yellow River in China, sinking land is now the dominant driver of relative sea-level rise. This dramatically increases their vulnerability to flooding, land loss, saltwater intrusion and storm surges.

Using a decade of satellite radar observations from Copernicus Sentinel-1, researchers mapped surface elevation changes across 40 major river deltas worldwide. The study found that more than half of the deltas studied are subsiding at rates faster than 3 millimetres per year. This means that subsidence is a huge challenge for delta regions – more pressing even than global sea-level rise.

Host says lawyers barred him from discussing decision to drop Texas Democrat segment amid FCC rules scrutiny
The talkshow host Stephen Colbert has accused the Trump administration of censoring critics after CBS pulled his interview with a Texas Democrat on Monday, apparently at the behest of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Colbert told viewers of the Late Show that network lawyers told him he was also prohibited from talking about their refusal to air his interview with James Talarico, a Texas state representative seeking his party’s nomination to challenge the Republican incumbent, John Cornyn, for a senate seat in November.
