Orville Peck was in the middle of a soundcheck when he found out that his idol Dolly Parton had died. It was late August and the masked, pseudonymous country singer was due to perform an intimate set at London’s Rough Trade East in half an hour. The news hit him like a truck. With no chance to process it, he decided to grieve in real time, on stage, before a roomful of fans.

“I’m a little bit of a mess right now,” Peck told the audience, perched on a stool with an acoustic guitar. “Dolly was my hero,” he continued, his voice cracking. “As a gay man coming into country music and feeling sort of alone, I think the thing that always felt comforting is, like, just knowing Dolly existed in country. It made me feel like I had a friend there.” He then launched into a rendition of Parton’s iconic hit I Will Always Love You.

Formula One has announced its calendar for 2027, with an increase in sprint races to 10 events, including at Monaco, and the addition of meetings in Portugal and Turkey.

The season of 24 races will open in Bahrain, while the British grand prix at Silverstone is to take place on the weekend of 2-4 July. All four races in the Middle East are scheduled to take place in their normal slots.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De Filipijnse oud-president Rodrigo Duterte is voor het eerst in persoon verschenen bij het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) in Den Haag. Dat gebeurde tijdens een voorbereidende zitting in de zaak tegen hem. Hij wordt verdacht van misdaden tegen de menselijkheid bij zijn gewelddadige aanpak tegen drugs.

De 81-jarige Duterte was sinds maart 2025 niet meer in het openbaar gezien. Hij werd kort na zijn arrestatie op de luchthaven van Manilla overgebracht naar een gevangenis in Nederland. Enkele dagen later verscheen Duterte via een videolink bij zijn eerste hoorzitting voor het strafhof, waarbij hij vermoeid oogde. Daarna is hij niet meer bij zittingen gezien.

ROTTERDAM (ANP) - Bereikbaarheid wordt een nog groter probleem voor de regio Rotterdam. Dat zei burgemeester Carola Schouten tijdens het Miljoenenontbijt in Rotterdam. De burgemeester van Rotterdam ziet dat het kabinet in de miljoenennota een stap zet met investeringen in onderhoud, "maar het is bij lange na niet genoeg".

"Bereikbaarheid wordt een groot issue. Dat is het al, maar het wordt steeds meer", zei Schouten.

Met name de geplande renovatie van de Van Brienenoordbrug gaat de komende jaren voor problemen zorgen in de regio Rotterdam. Dagelijks gaan er ongeveer een kwart miljoen voertuigen over de brug in de A16 en daarmee is het een van de drukste snelwegen van Nederland. De burgemeester zegt over de gevolgen hiervan in gesprek te gaan met ondernemers en werkgevers. Onder meer om te bespreken hoe de haven bereikbaar gehouden kan worden.

"Bereikbaarheid is cruciaal voor deze regio. Als we willen dat de economische groei aantrekt, zal dat een randvoorwaarde zijn die we echt moeten aanpakken", aldus Schouten.
