DEN HAAG (ANP) - De dossiers van ruim 69.000 mensen die zich hadden gemeld voor compensatie om de toeslagenaffaire zijn beoordeeld. Meer dan 43.000 mensen zijn uiteindelijk na deze integrale beoordeling (IB) erkend als gedupeerde, meldt demissionair staatssecretaris Sandra Palmen (Toeslagen) donderdag aan de Tweede Kamer.

"Voor een grote groep ouders is daarmee het financieel herstel ook afgerond", aldus de bewindsvrouw. Gedupeerden kregen volgens haar na de IB gemiddeld in totaal 40.400 euro. Er lopen nog circa 7400 bezwaarprocedures van ouders tegen hun eerste beoordeling.

Er zijn ook mensen die recht hebben op meer compensatie, omdat zij bijvoorbeeld hun baan of huis hebben verloren door het schandaal. Omdat deze regeling lang duurde, is vorig jaar besloten het traject te vereenvoudigen. Zo'n 9000 ouders willen aanvullende schadevergoeding; meer dan 3300 hebben die al gekregen.

De ambitie is om alle ouders voor eind volgend jaar financieel te hebben gecompenseerd. Voor de hersteloperatie is 11,7 miljard euro gereserveerd.

MILAAN (ANP) - Merel Conijn is "heel blij" met haar zilveren medaille op de Olympische Spelen van Milaan. De 24-jarige schaatsster moest op de 5000 meter het goud laten aan Francesca Lollobrigida uit Italië. "Ik heb heel even gedacht aan goud, maar ik denk dat ik hier heel blij mee mag zijn", zei ze tegen de NOS.

Het zijn de eerste Spelen van Conijn, die vier jaar eerder in Beijing reserve was. Ze reed in de eerste rit na de dweil tegen Sandrine Tas. Conijn zag de Belgische steeds meer afstand nemen tijdens de rit, maar met twee snelle slotronden wist ze haar op de streep net te kloppen. "Ik kon het pas geloven toen mijn tijd op het bord stond", stelde Conijn. "Het was best spannend."

Het was een flinke domper: schaatser Joep Wennemars raakte woensdag uit balans op de Olympische Spelen in Italië toen hij werd gehinderd door zijn Chinese tegenstander Lian Ziwen. Ook het personeel van snackbar Tante Suus in Vlaardingen zag het gebeuren en grapte erover op Facebook: 'Morgen geen loempia's, bamischijven en nasihappen'. Dat leverde likes op, maar ook kritiek.

To be a Olympic-class skeleton racer requires extraordinary guts and impeccable nerve, as the corners loom and then whoosh past at frightening speed. So did anybody really believe that Ukraine’s Vladyslav Heraskevych would lose his when the world’s eyes were upon him?

Not the International Olympic Committee, who flipped between threats of expulsion and sweet talk over the last fortnight, without coming close to changing his mind. And certainly not those of us who have spoken and messaged Heraskevych, and found a man utterly prepared to sacrifice his dream of winning a Winter Olympic medal for a higher purpose.

American actor best known for his role in the television drama Dawson’s Creek

For a worldwide generation of young television viewers in the 1990s, James Van Der Beek, who has died aged 48 after suffering from cancer, provided the role model of a sensitive male teenager. As the fresh-faced Dawson Leery in the American drama Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003) – shown in the UK on Channel 4 and then on Channel 5 – he starred in a series portraying friendship, first love and the trials and tribulations of adolescence in the fictional coastal town of Capeside, Massachusetts.

The nerdy Dawson’s idealism and habit of over-analysing often give him unrealistic expectations and a tendency to make long emotional speeches. “It’s not about the kiss – it’s about the journey and creating a sustaining magic,” he reflects in an early episode.

Amazon engineers have been pushing back against internal policies that steer them toward Kiro, the company's in-house AI coding assistant, and away from Anthropic's Claude Code for production work, according to a Business Insider report based on internal messages. About 1,500 employees endorsed the formal adoption of Claude Code in one internal forum thread, and some pointed out the awkwardness of being asked to sell the tool through AWS's Bedrock platform while not being permitted to use it themselves.

Kiro runs on Anthropic's Claude models but uses Amazon's own tooling, and the company says roughly 70% of its software engineers used it at least once in January. Amazon says there is no explicit ban on Claude Code but applies stricter requirements for production use.
