MILAAN (ANP) - Jenning de Boo staat voorlopig op zilver op de 1000 meter op de Olympische Spelen van Milaan. De 22-jarige schaatser moest in het Milano Speed Skating Stadium met 1.06,78 alleen topfavoriet Jordan Stolz uit de Verenigde Staten voor laten gaan. De Chinees Ning Zhongyan staat op brons.

De wedstrijd is nog niet ten einde omdat Joep Wennemars mag overrijden nadat hij was gehinderd in zijn rit door de Chinees Lian Ziwen. Met zijn tijd van 1.07,58 eindigde hij als vijfde.

TREVISO (ANP) - De Amerikaanse skiester Lindsey Vonn is voor de derde keer geopereerd aan haar beenbreuk na haar val in de olympische afdaling van zondag. Dat laat de voormalige olympisch kampioen weten op Instagram. "Succesvol heeft vandaag een totaal andere betekenis dan een paar dagen geleden", schrijft ze bij een foto vanuit het ziekenhuis in Treviso.

"Ik boek vooruitgang en ook al gaat het langzaam, ik weet dat het goed zal komen." Vonn feliciteert vanuit haar ziekenhuisbed de Amerikaanse sporters die haar naar eigen zeggen inspiratie en "iets om voor te juichen" geven met hun prestaties.

SAKHIR (ANP) - Max Verstappen (28) heeft naar eigen zeggen "een goede dag" gehad op het circuit van Bahrein. "We hebben veel ronden gereden en verschillende programma's getest", zei de Formule 1-coureur in een persbericht van Red Bull nadat hij 136 ronden in de nieuwe wagen had gereden. Verstappen zette de tweede tijd neer achter wereldkampioen Lando Norris.

Er gelden dit jaar nieuwe regels in de Formule 1 waardoor de kwaliteit van de verschillende wagens anders kan zijn dan vorig seizoen. "Er valt nog veel te leren en uit te zoeken voor de eerste race. We hebben veel testprocedures doorlopen die we tijdens een raceweekend kunnen tegenkomen", aldus Verstappen. "We richten ons niet op rondetijden en klasseringen, maar op het begrijpen van de auto en de banden."

Verstappen komt vrijdag weer in actie. "Ik kijk nu uit naar vrijdag om te zien wat we nog meer kunnen leren", stelde Verstappen.

MILAAN (ANP) - Joep Wennemars schaatst de 1000 meter op de Olympische Spelen over. De 23-jarige Nederlander werd in zijn rit gehinderd door de Chinees Ziwen Lian.

De organisatie van het olympische schaatstoernooi meldt dat Lian is gediskwalificeerd en Wennemars later op woensdag een herkansing krijgt.

Schrijver Cees Nooteboom is overleden, meldt de stichting CPNB (Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek) woensdag.

"Met groot verdriet hebben wij kennisgenomen van het overlijden van Cees Nooteboom. De schrijver van het Boekenweekgeschenk van 1991, 'Het volgende verhaal', was een van Nederlands literaire giganten, internationaal geroemd en gelauwerd. Wij wensen alle nabestaanden veel sterkte."

Eerder woensdag meldde Het Parool via uitgever De Bezige Bij het overlijden van de schrijver. Hij was 92 jaar.

Mr Trump’s America First administration has made clear its intention to bully the continent economically through tariffs and threats, and the transatlantic alliance can no longer be relied upon for its defence. Hi-tech competition from China threatens to overwhelm European industry’s attempts to keep up in key areas, such as the green transition. Across the European Union, support for the far right is on the rise.

Although James Reka finds total freedom in his studio practice, it’s public art that he gravitates toward. The Australia-born artist researches the history of a building or neighborhood as he conceptualizes a mural and enjoys the constraints of creating within a particular geographic and cultural context.

“Public art needs to connect with the local community,” he says. “It does need to have a narrative or a message, even if it’s very subtle. I am mindful of this and choose to view it as a challenge to explore certain themes and color combinations that my studio work does not.”

Reka renders minimalist shapes into dense compositions with a distinctive sense of vitality and movement. The largely geometric depictions draw attention to the color palettes and layerings, which the artist builds up through contrasting hues that delineate a hand or face. Architectural details like windows or piping play a role, too, and are incorporated into the final piece.

While the studio and street require different approaches, Reka finds that all of his work has trended toward abstraction in recent years. “I was actually never very good at painting or drawing realistic things!” he says. “Maybe subconsciously, I acknowledged my strengths and weaknesses at an early stage in my art career.” In describing his process, he adds:

I often start by drawing proportionally correct figures before stripping them back to the rawest form or most simplified version. Through sketching, happy accidents occur, which often help me direct the content or composition. Certain lines tend to stand out for me to then manipulate and abstract further. Eventually, this process is ripping the content apart and then rebuilding its core elements in an abstract way.
