As you will all be aware, the Oscars aren’t particularly fun. They are an overlong celebration of underwatched films that take place in a room where, by the end of the evening, the bulk of those present have been told that they aren’t good enough to win anything. The whole thing is excruciating.

But you know what’s much better than the Oscars? The annual Oscars nominees luncheon. This is when everyone who has been nominated gathers for a nice lunch. It isn’t televised, so nobody has to be on their best behaviour. No awards are handed out, so technically everyone invited is an equal. And, best of all, they take a class photo of everyone at the end.

Head of Crown Prosecution Service for England and Wales says he is working with Thames Valley and Met forces

Prosecutors are “in close contact” with police over investigations into Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Peter Mandelson’s links with Jeffrey Epstein, England and Wales’s most senior criminal prosecutor has said.

Thames Valley police has said it is reviewing allegations that the child sex offender Epstein provided Mountbatten-Windsor with a woman to have sex with at Royal Lodge in 2010, as well as that the former prince shared confidential reports from his role as a government trade envoy with the disgraced financier.

‘In Florida, people were told to keep the length of a baby alligator apart. So I included a character wearing an alligator mask in my pandemic-themed masked ball’

When Covid started, everybody was talking about masks. I thought about the face coverings we all had to wear, and I thought about masks more widely. I researched masked balls and carnival masks and read a lot about the many outbreaks of plague in Venice starting in the 14th century, and about pandemics in general.

This photograph, Danse Macabre, was inspired by Covid. If you take a close look at the paper lamps hanging from the ceiling, you’ll see some Covid-19 viruses smuggled in among them. In the middle of the scene, a doctor in a plague mask – the type still sold at carnival in Venice – is dancing with the rat that caused the plague. The couple on the left reference the fact that the Bolsonaro-led Brazilian government at the time of the pandemic was accused of allowing many Indigenous people to die unnecessarily [he denied any wrongdoing]. So those two deal with colonialism – the woman in the yellow hat represents an Indigenous person, the guy she’s dancing with is wearing a mask with the face of Pedro de Alvarado, a Spanish conquistador responsible for massacring Indigenous populations in Guatemala in the 16th century.

The Super League project has finally died out after Uefa announced it had reached “an agreement of principles for the wellbeing of European club football” with Real Madrid and the European Football Clubs group.

In a surprise statement released the day before Uefa stages its annual congress in Brussels, the governing body said all parties had agreed a way forward “respecting the principle of sporting merit with emphasis on long-term club sustainability and the enhancement of fan experience through the use of technology”.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - De recente massaontslagen bij Heineken, ASML en ABN AMRO zijn nog maar een voorproefje, denkt oud-ASML-topman Peter Wennink. "Er komt nog veel meer aan in het bedrijfsleven en bij de overheid. Kunstmatige intelligentie (AI) kan de productiviteit zoveel verhogen. Als wij dat niet doen, doen andere landen dat. Maar het is niet alleen digitalisering. De kostenstijgingen spelen ook in de zorg, defensie en klimaat en energie. We moeten iets doen", zei Wennink tijdens het evenement State of Dutch Tech in Den Haag tegen het ANP.

Wennink ziet de wereld veranderen door de transities rond digitalisering, zorg, defensie en klimaat. "We beseffen nog onvoldoende dat die veranderingen zo snel gaan. Het is als een veenbrand. We moeten weten dat het brandt en dat die niet verder gaat, door er wat aan te doen. Dat gevoel van urgentie is op dit moment het belangrijkste. En bedrijven voelen dat als eerste. Als wij ons niet realiseren dat andere landen die kansen met AI en automatisering wel pakken, staan wij op het menu. Zo werkt de wereld."

VEGHEL (ANP) - De overname van HEMA door een investeringsvehikel van de familie Van Eerd is woensdag afgerond. In december werd bekend dat investeringsvehikel Mississippi Ventures de resterende helft van de aandelen van de winkelketen wilde overnemen. Nu heeft het vehikel van de familie achter supermarktketen Jumbo alle benodigde goedkeuringen ontvangen.

Vorige maand gaf de Autoriteit Consument & Markt (ACM) al goedkeuring voor de deal. De Belgische mededingingsautoriteiten en de ondernemingsraad moesten hun goedkeuring toen nog geven.

Jumbo en HEMA blijven los van elkaar bestaan. De afronding van de overname is volgens HEMA-topvrouw Saskia Egas Reparaz "een prachtige start van ons 100-jarig jubileumjaar" en geeft de keten "een stevig fundament" om verder te groeien. "We zien volop kansen om de lat opnieuw hoger te leggen, van het vernieuwen van onze winkels tot het verbeteren en vernieuwen van onze producten en het werken aan een nog betere klantervaring."

NEW YORK (ANP) - Speelgoedbedrijf Mattel, bekend van Barbie, Hot Wheels en Fisher-Price, was woensdag een opvallende verliezer op de aandelenbeurzen in New York. Mattel kwam met tegenvallende cijfers over de belangrijke feestdagenperiode en ook met een verwachting voor een lagere winst per aandeel in 2026. Het aandeel dook in de vroege handel op Wall Street ruim 26 procent in het rood.

Mattel zette in het afgelopen kwartaal een omzet in de boeken van 1,77 miljard dollar, wat minder is dan analisten hadden verwacht. Het bedrijf wees daarbij op zwakkere verkopen in december in de Verenigde Staten. De nettowinst kwam uit op 106 miljoen dollar. Dat is een kwart minder dan een jaar eerder.

De Dow-Jonesindex stond kort na opening 0,6 procent hoger op 50.474 punten. De brede S&P 500 steeg 0,6 procent tot 6983 punten en de technologiegraadmeter Nasdaq won 0,7 procent tot 23.252 punten. Op dinsdag was bij het slot van de handel een gemengd beeld te zien voor de drie hoofdgraadmeters met beperkte koersuitslagen.

Banenrapport

De aandacht ging ook uit naar het belangrijke banenrapport van de Amerikaanse overheid. De publicatie van dat rapport liep vertraging op door de gedeeltelijke shutdown van de overheid. De werkgelegenheid in de Verenigde Staten groeide in januari met 130.000 arbeidsplaatsen. Economen hadden in doorsnee een groei van 65.000 banen verwacht. De werkloosheid in 's werelds grootste economie bedroeg 4,3 procent.

De ontwikkelingen op de arbeidsmarkt zijn van belang voor het rentebeleid van de Federal Reserve. Bij een sterk afkoelende banenmarkt kan de centrale bank eerder geneigd zijn de rente verder te verlagen. Dinsdag kwamen nog zwakke cijfers over de Amerikaanse detailhandelsverkopen in december. De consumentenbestedingen zijn de motor van de Amerikaanse economie.

Andere bedrijven die de boeken openden, waren bijvoorbeeld hotelketen Hilton (plus 0,2 procent), beleggingsapp Robinhood (min 10,5 procent), levensmiddelenproducent Kraft Heinz (min 3 procent) en taxidienst Lyft (min 13,4 procent).

In Zwijndrecht is woensdagochtend brand geweest in partycentrum Spektakel aan het Norderstedtplein. In hetzelfde pand bevinden zich ook de openbare bibliotheek en het Walburg College. De brand was snel onder controle. Niemand raakte gewond.
