STRAATSBURG (ANP) - Een grote meerderheid van het Europees Parlement heeft dinsdag ingestemd met beschermingsmaatregelen voor de landbouwsector in het Mercosur-handelsakkoord. 483 leden stemden voor, 102 tegen.
In de maatregelen staat onder meer dat een beperkte hoeveelheid kip en rund mag worden geïmporteerd uit Mercosur-landen Argentinië, Brazilië, Paraguay en Uruguay. Ook moet de Europese Commissie elk halfjaar rapporteren aan het parlement wat de invloed is van de invoer van onder meer citrusvruchten, eieren en suiker voor de EU-landbouwmarkt.
Vorige maand stemde een nipte meerderheid van het parlement ervoor de handelsdeal naar het EU-hof te sturen ter beoordeling. Pas na een oordeel van het hof stemt het parlement over de uiteindelijke deal en kan deze officieel worden goedgekeurd.
Er is al een voorlopig akkoord ondertekend door de EU. De Europese Commissie en meerdere lidstaten hebben toegezegd dat uit te willen voeren. Maatregelen voor de landbouwsector maken daar ook deel van uit.
MILAAN (ANP) - De Nederlandse shorttrackers zijn diep ontgoocheld na de mislukte medaillejacht op de gemengde aflossing bij de Olympische Spelen van Milaan. Xandra Velzeboer ging in de halve finale onderuit, waardoor Nederland was veroordeeld tot het rijden van de B-finale, die de shorttrackers vervolgens wonnen in een olympisch record. "Superklote, we zijn het sterkste team en hadden heel veel vertrouwen dat we het heel goed zouden doen", zei een huilende Xandra Velzeboer bij de NOS.
"Ik had een beetje stress omdat we de eerste positie hadden verloren, ik zat bij de wissel klem met China en wilde dat weer goedmaken, weer op snelheid komen. Maar ik prikte met mijn mes in het ijs. Ik snap het niet", zei Xandra Velzeboer over haar val.
Jens van 't Wout vond dat uit de tijden bleek dat Nederland veruit de snelste was. "Het jammere van onze sport is dat niet de snelste wint. Ik maakte een misser en we hadden een val. Dat had ieder van ons kunnen zijn."
BERLIJN (ANP/RTR) - Duitsland wil voor meer dan een half miljard euro aanvalsdrones aanschaffen. De eerste kamikazedrones, die in de lucht rondhangen tot ze een doelwit zien om zich erop te storten, moeten binnen een jaar worden geleverd. De Duitse troepen in Litouwen zouden ze als eersten krijgen.
De drones worden besteld bij Helsing en Stark Defence, blijkt uit documenten waarop meerdere media de hand hebben gelegd. Het parlement moet nog met de contracten instemmen, maar dat geldt als een formaliteit.
'Zelfmoorddrones' zijn sinds de Oekraïne-oorlog niet meer weg te denken van het slagveld. Hun dodelijke overwicht zorgt ervoor dat geen van beide partijen veel opschiet. Maar ze moeten steeds razendsnel verbeterd worden om verdedigers te vlug af te blijven. De afgelopen maanden kwamen er meermaals klachten over kamikazedrones van Helsing, die in Oekraïne maar matig zouden presteren.

Why is everyone talking about fibremaxxing?

TikTok-born trends rarely go hand in hand with sage health advice, but that’s not to say upping our fibre – an often-forgotten part of our diets – is a bad idea. “Fibre needed its moment, so this is a good thing,” says dietitian Priya Tew. The non-digestible carbohydrate has two main functions: “There’s insoluble fibre, which is found in things such as whole grains, brown rice or vegetable skins, and I think about it like a broom,” Tew says, “in that it brushes the system out.” Then there’s soluble fibre (oats, beans, lentils), which she likens to a sponge: “It turns into this gel in your gut, and aids digestion and keeps us regular.” But that’s only part of the story, because fibre can also help lower cholesterol and stabilise blood sugar.
So, are you getting enough? “The aim is 25-30g fibre a day, but in reality most of us are maybe getting 15-18g,” Tew says, so we’ve got a little way to go. That said, some folk on the #fibremaxxing train have set their sights higher, which is where things can become problematic. “If you’re having too much fibre, you can end up feeling bloated, constipated or have abdominal pain,” she says, and that can occur when you increase your fibre intake too quickly: “The body needs time to get used to what’s happening.”

Enter Sébastien Chenu, vice-president of Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN). Chenu advanced the box-office success argument as a reason for his party’s proposal to eliminate, Doge-style, France’s National Cinema Centre (CNC) – the public body that subsidises almost every nook and cranny of the country’s heavy-hitting film industry. Let the market take over? Quality as a derivative of quantity? If the RN is perfectly happy to surrender Audiard for Avengers 18 (or whatever), why not apply the logic elsewhere as well?
