PARIJS (ANP/AFP/RTR) - De Amerikaanse dreigementen over de handel en de intimidatie vanuit Washington zijn niet voorbij, volgens de Franse president Emmanuel Macron. Hij waarschuwt in interviews in Europese kranten dat Europa lang uitgestelde economische hervormingen moet doorvoeren en de kracht van de EU wereldwijd moet verstevigen. "Het Groenlandmoment" is volgens Macron een wake-upcall geweest om tot actie over te gaan.

Hij doelt op het eerdere dreigement van president Donald Trump om Groenland in te lijven en bij de VS te voegen. Er is momenteel wat ontspanning in de Europees-Amerikaanse relaties, maar dat is volgens de Franse president maar tijdelijk.

De regering-Trump is "openlijk anti-Europees" en probeert de Europese Unie uit elkaar te trekken, aldus Macron. In de komende maanden dreigen volgens hem Amerikaanse importheffingen omdat Amerikaanse techreuzen problemen hebben met de Europese Digital Services Act.

UTRECHT (ANP) - Rabobank heeft vanwege alle geopolitieke onzekerheid in de wereld meer geld apart gezet voor leningen die mogelijk niet worden terugbetaald. Desondanks heeft de bank 2025 afgesloten met zijn op een na hoogste winst ooit.

Rabobank stopte 764 miljoen euro in de stroppenpot, waar een jaar eerder nog sprake was van 468 miljoen euro aan kosten voor kredietverliezen. "Je kijkt natuurlijk wat er kan gebeuren in de wereld. Het is best wel fragiel nu", legt financieel topman Bas Brouwers uit.

Bij een verdere escalatie van de handelsstrijd met veel nieuwe handelsbarrières zouden handelsstromen en ook klanten van de bank kunnen worden geraakt. Dergelijke scenario's heeft Rabobank meegenomen in zijn modellen. Tot nu toe merkt de bank evenwel niet dat veel klanten in de problemen komen.

Onderaan de streep bleef vorig jaar bijna 5 miljard euro winst over, na de recordwinst van 5,2 miljard euro in 2024. De bank profiteerde van aanhoudende groei van de leningenportefeuille en haalde ook meer inkomsten uit provisies en commissies.

PARIJS (ANP/BLOOMBERG/RTR) - Het Italiaanse modemerk Gucci heeft vorig jaar minder luxegoederen verkocht. Het modehuis is het belangrijkste merk van het luxeconcern Kering. Dat Franse concern, ook eigenaar van Yves Saint Laurent en Bottega Veneta, boekte vorig jaar een lagere omzet.

De populariteit van Gucci-producten zoals tassen, riemen en zonnebrillen neemt al een aantal jaar af. Economische onzekerheid zorgt voor minder vraag naar luxeproducten, vooral vanuit China. Het Italiaanse modemerk verkocht in het laatste kwartaal van vorig jaar 10 procent minder. Dat was wel iets beter dan analisten van Bloomberg hadden verwacht. De omzet van Gucci daalde vorig jaar 22 procent.

De omzet van Kering was vorig jaar 13 procent lager. Volgens topman van Kering Luca de Meo tonen de prestaties in 2025 niet "het ware potentieel van de groep". De Meo staat sinds september aan de leiding van het luxeconcern. In april presenteert hij zijn plannen voor de toekomst. Hij wil terugkeren naar groei.

WASHINGTON (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump verwacht dat zijn kandidaat voor het voorzitterschap van de Federal Reserve de economie kan aanwakkeren tot een groei van 15 procent. Deze zeer optimistische verwachting onderstreept de druk waaronder Kevin Warsh, de Fed-kandidaat van Trump, komt te staan als zijn aanstelling wordt bevestigd door de Senaat.

Als Warsh "het werk doet waar hij toe in staat is", dan "kunnen we met 15 procent groeien, ik denk zelfs meer", zei Trump in een interview met Fox Business. "Ik denk dat hij geweldig zal zijn, en hij is echt een topmens."

Het was niet helemaal duidelijk of Trump verwees naar groei op jaarbasis of een andere maatstaf. De Amerikaanse economie, die dit jaar naar verwachting met 2,4 procent zal groeien, is de afgelopen vijf decennia gemiddeld met 2,8 procent per jaar gegroeid. Het bruto binnenlands product (bbp), de maatstaf voor economische groei, is sinds de jaren vijftig slechts een paar keer met meer dan 15 procent gestegen.

Global stocks hit a new record in Asian trade, led by a three-day rally in Tokyo where the Nikkei jumped to a fresh peak, after Japan’s conservative governing coalition strengthened its grip on power.

So, the US dollar kicked off the week on the back foot, and upcoming US data from today through Friday will determine whether the pressure continues or whether the greenback finds some relief.

US retail sales today are expected to show slowing growth in December — not great news for the most festive month of the year. On Wednesday, the official jobs report is expected to come in soft, with around 70k non-farm job additions, a steady unemployment rate and slower wage growth at 3.6%.

We are reducing capital expenditure for 2026 to the lower end of the guidance range, while continuing to drive down our cost base. We are also taking decisive action to high-grade our portfolio and strengthen our company, including the execution of our $20bn disposal programme and the decision to suspend the share buyback and fully allocate excess cash to our balance sheet.

The reality is the legal framework placed police and protesters in this situation – and what I saw as I protested looked like instances of excessive police force

The Town Hall riot will no doubt be examined closely by NSW police, accountability agencies and likely the criminal courts, as charges against protesters and possibly police are processed.

I decline in its aftermath to engage in the standard political rhetoric; fawning praise for police and strident condemnation of protesters. I have a lot of respect for the work police do and how tough it is. I also have a lot of respect for people who peacefully engage in the political process by protesting. Most people in both groups are decent and good, but not perfect, and all people deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Netherlands-based site uses public information and tips to reveal identities of agents involved in crackdowns across US

It started as a cheeky response on social media to the US secretary for homeland security. Months later, however, a Europe-based project to unmask US immigration and custom enforcement (ICE) agents has racked up millions of views and mobilised hundreds of volunteers.

“What we’re doing is a reaction to a problematic regime,” said Dominick Skinner, the Netherlands-based Irish national behind the website ICE List, of its mission to remove the anonymity that many of the armed federal agents operate under while deployed to US cities.

Deepfake fraud has gone "industrial," an analysis published by AI experts has said. From a report: Tools to create tailored, even personalised, scams -- leveraging, for example, deepfake videos of Swedish journalists or the president of Cyprus -- are no longer niche, but inexpensive and easy to deploy at scale, said the analysis from the AI Incident Database.

It catalogued more than a dozen recent examples of "impersonation for profit," including a deepfake video of Western Australia's premier, Robert Cook, hawking an investment scheme, and deepfake doctors promoting skin creams. These examples are part of a trend in which scammers are using widely available AI tools to perpetuate increasingly targeted heists. Last year, a finance officer at a Singaporean multinational paid out nearly $500,000 to scammers during what he believed was a video call with company leadership. UK consumers are estimated to have lost $12.86bn to fraud in the nine months to November 2025.

"Capabilities have suddenly reached that level where fake content can be produced by pretty much anybody," said Simon Mylius, an MIT researcher who works on a project linked to the AI Incident Database. He calculates that "frauds, scams and targeted manipulation" have made up the largest proportion of incidents reported to the database in 11 of the past 12 months. He said: "It's become very accessible to a point where there is really effectively no barrier to entry."
