Before his meeting with Xi Jinping meeting today, Keir Starmer was welcomed by National People’s Congress chairman Zhao Leji at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.

A report from the pool of journalists travelling with the British prime minister quotes Zhao as saying it was “significant” to develop the UK-China relationship “well” amid the “changing and turbulent international landscape”.

This is a historic visit, the first by a British prime minister in eight years. We have made this trip because I believe it is strongly in our common interest to find positive ways to work together, and that has been our long-standing position.

I look forward to a very productive few days discussing issues of global stability and security, growth and shared challenges like climate change.

BEIJING (ANP) - De Chinese president Xi Jinping heeft donderdag tegen de Britse premier Keir Starmer gezegd dat China klaar is voor een langdurig strategisch partnerschap met Groot-Brittannië. Dat blijkt uit een gezamenlijke verklaring na hun ontmoeting in Beijing.

Xi zei dat de relatie de afgelopen jaren "ups en downs heeft gekend die niet in het belang van onze landen waren" en dat meer dialoog essentieel is. Starmer zei dat Groot-Brittannië een "verfijndere" relatie nastreeft met China.

Het bezoek van Starmer aan China, het eerste van een Britse premier sinds 2018, vindt plaats te midden van spanningen tussen Groot-Brittannië en zijn bondgenoot de Verenigde Staten naar aanleiding van recente uitspraken van president Donald Trump, waaronder dreigementen om Groenland over te nemen.

Europese en andere westerse landen hebben recent de diplomatieke banden met China aangetrokken, volgens waarnemers om zich in te dekken tegen de onvoorspelbaarheid van de VS onder Trump.

Starmer blijft vier dagen in China.
