PARIJS (ANP/AFP) - Alexander Zverev is opgelucht dat hij zich sinds zondag eindelijk winnaar van een grandslamtoernooi mag noemen. "We hebben nederlagen geleden, we zijn soms ook verliezers geweest op de belangrijkste momenten. Maar uiteindelijk zijn we nu grandslamkampioenen en dat is wat telt", sprak de Duitser na zijn zege op de Italiaan Flavio Cobolli in de finale van Roland Garros tot zijn begeleiders op de tribune.
Zverev verloor zijn drie vorige grandslamfinales en liet het ook tegen Cobolli weer spannend worden, toen hij naliet om de partij in de vierde set te beslissen. In de beslissende vijfde set trok hij de partij alsnog naar zich toe. "Deze baan is om zoveel redenen zo speciaal voor me. Nu is het eindelijk een gelukkig einde", zei Zverev verder.
Voor Cobolli was het zijn eerste grandslamfinale. "Het is niet makkelijk voor me om nu te praten", vertelde hij op de baan. Cobolli voegde er voor Zverev aan toe: "Ik ben blij voor je, maar ik ben ook verdrietig omdat ik er zo dichtbij was en dat voel ik. Nu je je droom hebt waargemaakt, laat mij de volgende keer winnen."
