Kimi Antonelli dominated an eventful Monaco Grand Prix to claim his fifth win of the season, extending his lead in the Standings while his team mate George Russell failed to score.

For decades, string theory promised a "theory of everything" that described all particles and forces as tiny vibrating strings. Physicists hoped it could also solve one of the field's deepest problems: reconciling quantum mechanics with gravity. But as string theory grew increasingly elaborate — and experimentally unreachable — many physicists lost hope.

Now, some researchers are revisiting the theory from first principles. In a paper in press at Physical Review Letters, Clifford Cheung, a physicist at the California Institute of Technology, and colleagues lay out a small set of assumptions about the universe and show that they inevitably give rise to string theory.... Cheung's study, along with another one posted to arXiv in January, starts with two reasonably conservative assumptions: that the probabilities of all possible outcomes of an event add up to 100%, and that the laws of physics are consistent for observers moving at different speeds. Each group then posits additional assumptions that have not been borne out by observations. Cheung's analysis invokes "ultrasoftness," the idea that the probability of certain particle interactions drops off at a particular rate at high energies. The second study, led by University of Michigan physicist Henriette Elvang, instead assumes "supersymmetry," a maximal coupling between matter and forces. Both groups conclude the only theory that can satisfy their assumptions is one that looks like string theory...

Cheung and Elvang stress that their aim is not to prove the inevitability of string theory. "I don't have a dog in the fight; I just work here," Cheung says. Rather, the goal is to explore the space of possible theories under rigid constraints — regardless of whether they reflect reality... The one thing the researchers all agree on is that the field would benefit from more alternative models to string theory. Cheung sees the agnostic, bottom-up exploration as a step in that direction. "You can either give up on the problem because it's too culturally toxic, or you can ask: If you want to find an alternative, what do you need?" he says. "Now, we know exactly what to do."

PARIJS (ANP) - Tennisser Alexander Zverev heeft voor het eerst een grandslamtoernooi gewonnen. De 29-jarige Duitser versloeg in de finale van Roland Garros de Italiaan Flavio Cobolli in vijf sets: 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-1. De partij duurde 4 uur en 16 minuten.

De als tweede geplaatste Zverev verloor zijn drie vorige grandslamfinales, in 2020 op de US Open, in 2024 op Roland Garros en in 2025 op de Australian Open. Daarnaast strandde hij zeven keer in de halve eindstrijd van een grandslamtoernooi.

Zverev moest vaak de Spanjaard Carlos Alcaraz en de Italiaan Jannik Sinner voor zich dulden. Alcaraz ontbrak dit jaar op Roland Garros vanwege een blessure en Sinner strandde dit jaar al in de tweede ronde tegen de Argentijn Juan Manuel Cerúndolo wegens fysiek ongemak.

Voor de 24-jarige Cobolli, de nummer 10 van de plaatsingslijst, was het de eerste keer dat hij in de finale van een grandslamtoernooi stond. In de halve finale hoefde hij niet in actie te komen omdat zijn landgenoot Matteo Arnaldi ziek was.

MONACO (ANP/AFP) - Formule 1-coureur Kimi Antonelli is de jongste winnaar van de Grand Prix van Monaco geworden. De 19-jarige Mercedes-coureur won op het stratencircuit in het prinsdom zijn vijfde race op rij en nam het record van jongste winnaar af van de Brit Lewis Hamilton, die zondag als tweede eindigde.

"Het is een ongelofelijk weekend en een ongelofelijke race", zei Antonelli na afloop. "Dit is zo'n dag waarin we ontzettend veel snelheid hadden. Het ging allemaal vanzelf. De auto gaf me zoveel zelfvertrouwen om tot het uiterste te gaan. Ik heb er echt van genoten."

Antonelli leidt in het wereldkampioenschap met 156 punten. De Italiaan heeft 66 punten voorsprong op Ferrari-coureur Hamilton. Zijn Britse teamgenoot George Russell eindigde buiten de punten en staat derde met 88 punten. "De klus is nog niet geklaard, het is nog een lang seizoen", bleef Antonelli voorzichtig.

Om mysterieuze redenen vertrok Frank van der Meijden al na een jaar als burgemeester van het Gelderse Tiel. Openheid van zaken heeft de gemeenteraad nooit gekregen. „Dit ambt is zo kwetsbaar geworden”, vertelde de burgemeester aan inwoners. „Het is zo broos.”

Twee jaar geleden werd de hoofdaanklager van het Internationaal Strafhof beschuldigd van seksueel misbruik. Maandag, zo is de verwachting, wordt een besluit genomen over zijn positie. De onrust neemt toe, medewerkers en diplomaten kwamen onder vuur te liggen. Wat staat er op het spel? Waarom duurt de kwestie al twee jaar?

Binnen enkele weken worden de landelijke stikstofplannen bekendgemaakt. Minister Van Essen (D66) wil „een gelijk speelveld” voor boeren, maar omdat het Rijk jaren wachtte met helder beleid, is dat lastig. Boeren in het Binnenveld, waar Utrecht en Gelderland elkaar begrenzen, krijgen al te maken met heel andere regels.

De nieuwe Feyenoord-directeuren Robert Eenhoorn en Dévy Rigaux hebben besloten om niet verder te gaan met hoofdtrainer Robin van Persie. Zo komt er een einde aan de periode van de voormalig wereldspeler als coach in De Kuip.
