Approximately 20,000 Palestinians expected to leave territory for urgent medical care abroad

Preparations to reopen Gaza’s main border crossing into Rafah began on Sunday though it was uncertain if any Palestinians would pass through it before the day’s end, officials have said.

Before the war, the Rafah border crossing with Egypt was the only direct exit point for most Palestinians in Gaza to reach the outside world as well as a key entry point for aid. It has been largely shut since May 2024.

We arrived here at Tennis Court Wharf on Scotland Island in early January 2026 and stayed just 3 days, which proved ample, though a longer stay could easily be more than justified.
Our air B&B, Scotland Island Lodge, was excellent with its location just a hundred metres from Tennis Court Wharf.
This tranquil, forested island is just across the Pittwater from Church Point on the mainland. Church Point is reached by following a loop road heading west along Mona Vale Road into Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and on to Terry Hills in Sydney's northern districts.

We parked our car at the large public car park, right beside the Pittwater, at Church Point and paid the not insubstantial parking fees for our 3 days and walked the short distance to the ferry. For anyone contemplating visiting Scotland Island its worth checking out the parking situation before your arrival as this parking lot fills very quickly and on street parking is often limited, especially in the summer months.

The island has countless jetties and wharves, many privately owned and not accessible to the public.

There are five public wharves on the island though, they are - Bell, Carols, Eastern, Tennis and Cargo. From these wharves its possible to catch a ferry and circumnavigate the island while also visiting several other wharves on the mainland.

It is also possible to walk around most of the island, but only at low tide. A few property owners have however made circumnavigation difficult by placing obstructions to discourage walkers.

There are however roads on the island which do circle the island though back from the water 100 metres or so. Most vehicles used by residents are electric or diesel ATV's, though roads are wide enough for trucks to operate for garbage removal and other island maintenance purposes.

Despite the inconveniences of needing to access the island by private boat or public ferry or water taxis most of the residents we spoke to assured us this was not a problem for them.
We spoke to many long term residents who said they absolutely love living on the island. We also could not help but notice just how friendly the people were.

Scotland Island may not be for everyone, but if real estate values tell you anything, there are plenty of cashed up people who do want to avail themselves of the opportunity to live on this peaceful and paradise like island, and just relatively a short distance from the Sydney CBD

TURIJN (ANP/DPA) - Zeker 31 politiemensen zijn gewond geraakt bij uit de hand gelopen protesten in Turijn. Dat melden de Italiaanse autoriteiten, die ook spreken over tien aanhoudingen. Over het aantal gewonde demonstranten bestaat onduidelijkheid.

In de noordelijke Italiaanse stad vonden zaterdag protesten plaats tegen de ontruiming van een links cultureel centrum eind vorig jaar. Aan de acties deden volgens organisatoren zo'n 50.000 mensen mee.

Uiteindelijk braken rellen uit, waarbij de politie onder meer zou zijn bekogeld met stenen en molotovcocktails. Ook zou brand zijn gesticht. Veiligheidstroepen reageerden met traangas en de inzet van een waterkanon.

De rechtse Italiaanse regering veroordeelde de onrust als een "aanval op de staat". Het kwam in december ook al tot ongeregeldheden na de ontruiming van het centrum.

BUNNIK (ANP) - Autodealers zijn het nieuwe jaar slecht begonnen, met een flinke daling van de nieuwverkopen in januari. Volgens de brancheorganisaties BOVAG en RAI Vereniging rolden vorige maand maar 28.347 nieuwe auto's de Nederlandse showrooms uit, ruim 13 procent minder dan in januari vorig jaar. Het aantal volledig elektrische auto's kelderde zelfs met 35,4 procent.

In totaal werden in januari 7165 volledig elektrische auto's op kenteken gezet, waarmee het marktaandeel daalde tot 25,3 procent. Een jaar eerder bedroeg het marktaandeel van elektrisch aangedreven auto's nog 35,4 procent.

Nieuwe hybride auto's, die een elektrische motor combineren met een verbrandingsmotor, lieten in januari juist een flinke stijging zien. De verkoop van deze auto's kwam uit op 17.571, een stijging van 18,4 procent. Daarmee steeg het marktaandeel van hybrides naar 62 procent.

TEHERAN (ANP/AFP/RTR/DPA) - De hoogste Iraanse leider ayatollah Ali Khamenei heeft gewaarschuwd voor een groot conflict als de Verenigde Staten zijn land aanvallen. "De Amerikanen moeten weten dat als ze een oorlog beginnen, het deze keer een regionale oorlog zal zijn", verklaarde hij volgens het Iraanse persbureau Tasnim.

De spanning in de regio is opgelopen sinds Iran grote anti-regeringsprotesten met veel geweld heeft onderdrukt. De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump dreigde eerder al met ingrijpen en heeft een "armada" richting Iran gestuurd. Hij eist dat het land een deal met hem sluit. Iran dreigt met tegenaanvallen, maar zoekt ook een diplomatieke uitweg.

Volgens Khamenei is zijn land niet uit op oorlog en zal het ook geen oorlog beginnen. "Maar het Iraanse volk zal hard terugslaan tegen iedereen die aanvalt of schade veroorzaakt."

WASHINGTON (ANP) - SpaceX heeft ingrepen gedaan om misbruik van Starlink-systemen voor satellietinternet door Rusland te voorkomen. Dat meldt topman Elon Musk op X. "Het lijkt erop dat de stappen die we hebben genomen om het ongeoorloofde gebruik van Starlink door Rusland te stoppen, hebben gewerkt. Laat het ons weten als er meer gedaan moet worden."

Musk trad in het korte bericht niet in detail over de maatregelen. Die volgen op berichten dat Russische drones worden uitgerust met Starlink. Dat zou de onbemande toestellen een groter bereik geven. Nieuwssite Kyiv Independent schreef afgelopen week dat het ministerie van Defensie van Oekraïne samenwerkte met ruimtevaartbedrijf SpaceX om daar iets aan te doen. De Oekraïense krijgsmacht gebruikt Starlink zelf voor onder meer communicatie aan het front.

Ook vanuit andere Europese landen is druk uitgeoefend. De Poolse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Radosław Sikorski maande Musk op X om in te grijpen. "Geld verdienen aan oorlogsmisdaden kan je imago schaden."
