Nieuwe Epstein-documenten onthullen hoe diep Andrews banden reikten. Wist Queen Elizabeth meer dan ze liet blijken? Een analyse van koninklijk wegkijken.

Maart 2022. De herdenkingsdienst voor prins Philip in Westminster Abbey. De fragiele koningin Elizabeth verschijnt niet aan de arm van Charles of Anne, maar kiest demonstratief voor Andrew – de zoon die op dat moment al diep verwikkeld is in het Epstein-schandaal. Het beeld ging de wereld over en roept nog altijd dezelfde vraag op: hoe kon zij dit niet weten?

Wat de documenten onthullen

Begin 2026 zijn opnieuw duizenden pagina's uit het Epstein-onderzoek vrijgegeven – 3,5 miljoen pagina's in totaal. Daaruit blijkt dat Jeffrey Epstein een jonge Roemeense model meebracht naar een privédiner in Buckingham Palace, samen met een Russisch model en twee andere vrouwen. E-mails tonen aan dat Andrew het paleis voorstelde als dineerlocatie, en dat Epstein aanbood hem te koppelen aan een jonge Russische vrouw. Cruciaal: Andrew bleef na december 2010 contact houden met Epstein – terwijl hij in zijn beruchte Newsnight-interview in 2019 beweerde alle banden te hebben verbroken.

Thames Valley Police heeft aangekondigd een beschuldiging te onderzoeken dat Epstein een vrouw naar Royal Lodge stuurde om seks te hebben met Andrew. Inmiddels is Andrew uit Royal Lodge vertrokken en verhuisd naar het Sandringham-landgoed, nadat koning Charles hem in oktober 2025 zijn titels ontnam.

Moederliefde of blind vertrouwen?

Volgens koninklijk biografen had Elizabeth een "blind spot" voor haar favoriete zoon. Toen het schandaal in 2011 uitbrak, werd ze door auteur Christopher Andersen de "Queen of Denial" genoemd: Andrew ontkende, en dat was genoeg voor haar. Ze hielp zelfs mee aan de schikking van zo'n 12 miljoen pond met slachtoffer Virginia Giuffre – effectief zwijggeld dat voorkwam dat pijnlijke onthullingen tijdens haar jubileumjaar naar buiten kwamen.

Columnist A.N. Wilson beschrijft het scherp: als echtgenote van een marineman hanteerde Elizabeth het principe "boys will be boys". Hoveling wisten wat er in het paleis gebeurde toen Epstein er verscheen – de koningin was op dat moment in Balmoral – maar ze leek niet gebrand op informatie.[

Wat dit betekent voor de monarchie

De stilte van de huidige koninklijke familie is opvallend. Prins Edward deed vorige week in Dubai een halfslachtige poging door te zeggen dat "het belangrijk is om aan de slachtoffers te denken", maar dat werd breed als onvoldoende beschouwd. Premier Starmer heeft zelfs gezegd dat Andrew zou moeten getuigen voor het Amerikaanse Congres.

De kwestie raakt aan iets fundamenteels: het idee dat de monarchie boven elke controle staat. Elke nieuwe onthulling tast dat principe verder aan. Of Elizabeth nu écht niets wist of bewust wegkeek, het resultaat is hetzelfde: een instelling die te laat en te weinig verantwoordelijkheid neemt.

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - In Amsterdam is vorig jaar een recordaantal demonstraties geweest. Mensen gingen 3323 keer de straat op, 10 procent meer dan in 2024 en zelfs een verdubbeling ten opzichte van 2023, blijkt uit cijfers die burgemeester Femke Halsema aan de gemeenteraad heeft gestuurd.

"We dachten dat we in 2024 de limiet wel hadden bereikt, met 3000 demonstraties", zei Halsema in een toelichting op het stadhuis. "De meeste demonstraties gaan over internationale conflicten, zoals Iran, Syrië en Gaza. We hebben begrip voor de boosheid en het verdriet waar demonstranten uiting aan geven, en ze geven meestal op een democratische manier uiting aan hun emoties en opvattingen. Maar dit legt een enorme druk op het politieapparaat."

Ook bij de opkomst bij betogingen is een toename te zien. Voor het eerst sinds de jaren 80 deden aan een betoging in Amsterdam meer dan 250.000 mensen mee. Dat was het Rode Lijn-protest op 5 oktober tegen het geweld in Gaza en het Israëlbeleid van het kabinet. Verder waren er verschillende demonstraties met meer dan 20.000 deelnemers.

OSLO (ANP) - De Noorse politie is een onderzoek begonnen naar een recent afgetreden ambassadeur om haar banden met de overleden Amerikaanse zedendelinquent en zakenman Jeffrey Epstein. De voormalige topdiplomaat in Jordanië en Irak, Mona Juul, wordt beschuldigd van ernstige corruptie. Tegen haar man is een crimineel onderzoek geopend voor medeplichtigheid, melden Noorse media zoals omroep NRK.

Epstein was onder meer betrokken bij het onder druk zetten van een Noorse reder om een ​​appartement onder de marktprijs aan het echtpaar te verkopen. Het stel speelde een grote rol bij geheim overleg tussen Israël en de Palestijnen, dat in de jaren negentig leidde tot de Oslo-akkoorden. Het Noorse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken noemde Juuls contact met de veroordeelde misbruiker Epstein een ernstige inschattingsfout.

A chicken that loses its head can still, for a short period, run around and flap its wings: the illusion of life sustained by residual nerve impulses. After the downfall of Morgan McSweeney – our de-facto prime minister – this is the phase Britain’s government has now entered. Those who have worked closely with Keir Starmer emphasise his lack of politics, while his own aides privately boast that he is merely their frontman. McSweeney was the head, and the head has gone. There will be some flapping about in every direction. Starmer’s director of communications, Tim Allan has stepped down, the Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, is calling for Starmer’s resignation and the question of whether and when he will go is still open. But this political project is all over.

This was not supposed to happen, at least according to conventional political wisdom. Before his collision with real power, Starmer was sold as competence incarnate: a figure committed to public service, presiding over a team of adults in the room who would spare us from the psychodramas of the Tory era. They had, we were told, discovered an electoral elixir. Ruling out significant tax rises on wealthy elites, attacking the welfare state and bashing migrants placed them in the fabled centre ground and would appeal to mainstream public opinion.

A year after Donald Trump made American football’s showpiece all about him, Sunday’s game in Santa Clara always promised a sort of correction – a cooling of the mood, perhaps even an end to the manipulation of sport for political ends. (Unspecified “operational assignments” were the reason offered for the jets’ withdrawal, which means there’s probably a low-ranking member of the Trump administration putting big money on a US military strike somewhere in Latin America as we speak.) And yet, the absent autocrat still weighed on proceedings, his curdling influence turning every moment and gesture on Sunday into a referendum on the prospects for a post-Trumpian sporting future. Could football be normal again?
