I posted a rave review of the new Sam Raimi film, Send Help, the other day and triggered a debate I didn’t expect: is it OK for Christians to watch horror films? Send Help – a “gore-laced plane-crash survival face-off”, according to the Guardian review (which was less kind than mine) – is more comedy-horror than horror, or maybe horror/thriller. But there’s definitely horror there – you get the point.

The most extreme response was the man who said that not only are horror movies verboten, Christians shouldn’t even watch soap operas. So, for him, Emmerdale is as bad as The Exorcist – which itself seems a bizarre film to rule out, given its hero is a priest. Who rediscovers his faith after an encounter with evil. Which he wins. I call that a positive religious message.

The danger around the Portland star is that in making crucial debates into arguments about basketball, we lose sight of what is really important

There’s a weird, psychological tension around basketball fouls. Not unlike a trial. A single rubbered heartbeat thumps in our collective throats. In basketball litigation, the verdict is televised and delivered in public by the referee’s whistle. Deni Avdija faced more trials than a career criminal in early January, when he scored 41 points in the Portland Trail Blazers’ win over the Houston Rockets. Twenty-eight came from the field. This Tuesday marks the start of the lunar new year and the year of the fire horse, which represents fresh opportunities, personal growth and good fortune. I, for one, am keen to usher that horse in, and to celebrate I’ll be making this noodle salad, which is a variation on one I first ate at Mandy Yin’s restaurant, Sambal Shiok. It’s a dish that’s eaten across Malaysia and Singapore, and the idea is that everyone around the table tosses the salad high into the air at the same time: the superstition goes that the higher the salad is tossed, the more luck will ensue. Come on, Nelly.

BREDA (ANP) - De resultaten van Royal Cosun, het moederbedrijf van suikerproducent Cosun Beet Company en fritesmaker Aviko, stonden in 2025 flink onder druk door een sterke verslechtering van de Europese suikermarkt. Het teeltjaar 2025 leverde volgens het bedrijf voor de leden wel een "uitzonderlijk goede" bietenoogst op. Die extra volumes kwamen echter terecht in een markt waar de suikerprijzen al langere tijd onder druk staan. Dat leidde tot een lagere bietenprijs en drukte de marges.

De totale omzet van Cosun kwam in 2025 uit op 3,2 miljard euro. Dat is 8 procent minder dan in 2024, voornamelijk door de scherpe daling van de suikerprijzen. Het bedrijfsresultaat zakte tot 269 miljoen euro, van 518 miljoen euro een jaar eerder. Onder de streep hield Cosun 2 miljoen euro over. Dat was een jaar eerder nog 117 miljoen euro.

Volgens topman Hans Meeuwis was 2025 "zonder twijfel een uitdagend jaar" voor Cosun.

TUCSON (ANP) - De FBI heeft de beloning voor informatie die leidt tot de opsporing van de ontvoerde Nancy Guthrie of haar kidnapper verhoogd tot 100.000 dollar (84.000 euro). Dat is een verdubbeling van het bedrag dat eerder was uitgeloofd.

De inlichtingendienst is al twee weken op zoek naar Guthrie, de 84-jarige moeder van NBC-presentatrice Savannah Guthrie. Eerder werden al beelden vrijgegeven van een gemaskerde persoon die Guthrie vermoedelijk heeft meegenomen. Hij werd gefilmd via een camera in de deurbel.

De FBI deelt nu meer details over de verdachte. Hij wordt omschreven als een man van ongeveer 1,76 meter. Hij droeg een zwarte rugtas van het merk Ozark Trail.

De dienst hoopt met deze informatie gerichter te kunnen zoeken. Tot nu toe kwamen al 13.000 tips binnen.

MOSKOU (ANP/RTR) - Rusland gaat Cuba "humanitair helpen" omdat de VS proberen onder meer de olietoevoer naar het eiland te blokkeren. Dit heeft de Russische onderminister van Buitenlandse Zaken Sergej Rjabkov bevestigd. Russische media meldden eerder al dat het Kremlin van plan was binnenkort te hulp te schieten.

Cuba kampt met de ergste energiecrisis in jaren, grotendeels veroorzaakt door de Amerikaanse blokkade van de Venezolaanse olietoevoer. Venezuela was tot voor kort de voornaamste olieleverancier van het eiland. De Verenigde Staten dreigen landen die Cuba olie leveren met sancties. Vanwege die druk heeft Mexico olieleveringen aan Cuba opgeschort.

Aan het begin van de week beschuldigde het Kremlin de Verenigde Staten ervan te proberen het eiland met elf miljoen inwoners te "verstikken".
