Rai uses altered image with genitals removed in opening credits, prompting backlash from media and politicians

Italy’s state broadcaster, Rai, has been accused of censorship after removing the genitals from the image of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man in the opening credits for its Winter Olympics coverage.

The image of the 500-year-old drawing appears at the start of the clip before transforming into the bodies of ice skaters, skiers and other winter sports athletes.

This weekend brings the wide release of Saltburn director Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. As is befitting Fennell’s established style, the movie offers over-the-top sexual titillation (though, crucially, zero nudity) and elaborate production design. Plus, a contemporary pop soundtrack from Charli xcx. A horny film version of a 19th-century novel is as adult-skewing as it gets at the box office these days.

Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi suck face and stand around in the rain in expensive costumes for over two hours in a movie that Fennell proudly declares a loose translation from the page. It excises a large portion of the book’s story and focuses its eye primarily on the illicit romance between Cathy Earnshaw and swarthy Heathcliff. Crucially, it should be pointed out that Heathcliff is technically Cathy’s foster brother, which allows Wuthering Heights to fit comfortably into one of the most popular genres of online video in the world.

Na één drankje, twee uur praten en een hand op je onderrug bij het afscheid al denken: dit is ‘m? Volgens schrijver en podcastmaker Liesbeth Rasker (37) moeten we daar toch echt mee ophouden.

In haar populaire Instagram-café, waar elke maandag duizenden vrouwen (en een handvol mannen) liefdesadvies uitwisselen, keert dezelfde vraag steeds terug: hoe snel kan verliefdheid eigenlijk ontstaan?

Aanleiding deze week: een vrouw die na één date te horen kreeg dat de man in kwestie ‘niet verliefd’ was en daarom geen tweede afspraak wilde. Rasker kan haar verbazing nauwelijks onderdrukken. Denkt zo iemand echt dat daten betekent dat je na één enkele ontmoeting patsboem verliefd bent? Of is het gewoon een slap excuus?

Projectie

Haar standpunt is helder. “Elke keer als dit onderwerp voorbijkomt zeg ik wat ik altijd zeg: je kent iemand niet na een (of twee) dates en kunt dus ook niet verliefd zijn”, zegt ze in LINDA. En als je dat gevoel tóch hebt? “Als je wél verliefd bent na die ene date dan is dat projectie.”

We zien een potentiële partner als een leeg canvas en dopen de figuurlijke kwasten gretig in de verf. Een paar leuke anekdotes, een charmante glimlach en we vullen de rest zelf in. ”'Hij is zachtaardig, zo lief, zo zorgzaam, zo grappig ook.’ Maar waar baseer je dat op?”, vraagt ze zich hardop af.

Ze wijst op het programma Love is Blind als schoolvoorbeeld van projectie. Iemand zegt: ‘Nee hoor, ik zou het helemaal niet erg vinden als je met je vrienden op wintersport gaat.’ En de ander hoort vooral wat hij wíl horen.

Verliefd op een belofte

Maar echte liefde, stelt Rasker, zit niet in woorden. “Verliefd worden op basis van wat iemand zegt, betekent volgens mij vooral dat je verliefd wordt op de belofte. Werkelijke verliefdheid ontstaat op basis van wat iemand dóet.”

Zoals die ene man die na een paar dates snoepjes meenam voor haar kat en zich plat op de grond wierp om het dier te paaien. “Precies op dat moment wist ik, oh god, ik ga vreselijk verliefd op jou worden.”

En ja, er zijn stellen die zeggen dat het vanaf de eerste date raak was. Maar, nuanceert Rasker: dat zeggen we achteraf, als het goed is afgelopen. “Samenvattend: nee, je bent niet verliefd na een eerste date en dat is juist een goed teken.”
