Descendants of Jewish brothers forced to sell company to Nazis say appropriation by German far right is ‘repulsive’

The Jewish descendants of a German motorbike manufacturer that was forced by the Nazis to be relinquished have voiced their repulsion at the appropriation of the vehicle by far-right populists.

Members of the family, whose ancestors were forced to flee Germany in the 1930s, say they consider the use of the bike’s name by the anti-immigrant Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) as a “mockery of our history”.

The Canadian performer visited hospices, mystics and cemeteries to research Age Is a Feeling. The show, which has now been performed in 10 languages, has reduced men in their 70s to tears

It is the summer of 2024 and Haley McGee is performing Age Is a Feeling at a festival in Toronto. Her show is in good shape, having already raked in five-star reviews at the Edinburgh fringe. But this performance is different. As she launches into her poignant monologue about life, death and the business of getting old, she hears a baby cry.

The newborn sleeps through the rest of the show, but the performer, who is newly pregnant herself, feels as though she is speaking directly to this child and its young family. “It framed the whole show as a conversation with this baby,” McGee says: “This is my message for you about your adult life.”

Inspired by the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising that gripped Iran in 2022, two film students created a documentary, Memories of a Window, about onlookers who anonymously record footage as proof of state violence

Footage that went viral from Iran in late 2022 showed a woman being shot by security forces while capturing a bloody crackdown on anti-government protests on her phone. The victim’s last words were: “Film it!”

Mehraneh Salimian graduated from art school the same day, and that final wish guided her and her partner, Amin Pakparvar, to make their documentary short premiering at the Berlin film festival on Tuesday. Memories of a Window is dedicated to the slain woman, Shirin Alizadeh, and the role of amateur videos in recording and emboldening dissent in Iran.

MILAAN (ANP/RTR) - De Franse hockeyers waren na hun uitschakeling op de Winterspelen in Milaan en Cortina vooral boos op de eigen bond FFHG. Ze hadden geen begrip voor de schorsing die de bond had opgelegd aan verdediger Pierre Crinon voor vechten met een Canadese speler in de laatste groepswedstrijd.

"We zijn als broers en ze hebben een van onze broers eruitgegooid", zei doelman Antoine Keller na de 5-1-nederlaag tegen Duitsland. "Het is een grote grap. We hadden hem vandaag nodig en ze halen hem bij ons weg voor iets wat elk weekend gebeurt in een ijshockeywedstrijd", vervolgde de doelman.

Aanvoerder Pierre-Édouard Bellemare viel hem bij. "Niemand van ons vond dat er iets dramatisch aan zijn actie was. Het is natuurlijk al twintig jaar geleden dat ze ijshockey op de Olympische Spelen hebben gezien. Dus ze waren verrast door zoiets." Het was de eerste deelname van Frankrijk aan het Olympische ijshockeytoernooi voor mannen sinds 2002.

Klaas leek in het begin een botte hork. Hij had geen zin om ook maar enigszins vriendelijk te doen tegen de eerste paar vrouwen die langskwamen. Pas bij Barbara ontdooit de onderkoelde waaghals een beetje. Hij lijkt haar zelfs meer dan leuk te vinden.

Maar er ontstaan twijfels: Barbara is nog zeker vijf jaar aan Nederland gebonden vanwege haar kinderen. En Klaas wil geen latrelatie. Wat er zo romantisch uitziet, lijkt dus toch te gaan stranden.

Maar niet getreurd. Volgens roddelkanaal RealityFBI vindt de Oostenrijkse Nederlander alsnog de liefde in het programma. En wel in de vorm van Saskia, een vrouw met blonde krullen die een botoxkliniek runt.

Zij liet al weten hoteldebotel te zijn: "Zijn mooie bruine ogen, zijn krullen, zijn tanden… en dat ondernemende en sportieve. (…) Ik was stil, ik kon niks zeggen, het was alsof de vonk oversloeg.” En kennelijk denkt Klaas daar hetzelfde over. Ze zou afgelopen kerst bij hem gespendeerd hebben.
