On a Sunday afternoon set up for Ben Shelton to play national hero, the US Open final debutant suffered a four-set defeat to Alexander Zverev, a result that deflated the partisans at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match compounded Shelton’s miserable head-to-head record against the German, who claimed a second career grand slam title without having to face final bosses Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz. The defeat also extended a long drought – the last win by an American man at a grand slam was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open, when Shelton was still a month off his first birthday.
After the final, Shelton wore a hangdog expression as he thanked his team and the capacity crowd in New York, tucking the silver runner-up tray under his arm as if shunted off to high school detention. “Disappointed with how today went,” he said in his press conference afterward. “Excited with the progress that I feel that I’ve made. But, yeah, this one stings 100%.”

Andy Burnham has cancelled engagements today and tomorrow following the death of his father Roy, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s, the Press Association reports.
Burnham has spoken about his father’s illness which meant that he did not know his son had become prime minister.

Following on from the previous minister for democracy’s letter to you of 10 July 2026, we wanted to reiterate the government’s concerns, shared by many members of the public and parliamentarians, about the rise in the volume and concentration of money in UK politics. We have to limit the way financial power can end up dominating political power, to get to a politics that works for all people in all places.
We believe spending limits on parties and candidates are too high, and ought to be reduced.

It could not go on. Even at this early stage the sinking feeling was familiar and impossible to shake, and something had to give at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The first Bundesliga coaching change of the season is upon us just three games in, and it is not a major surprise that it is Eugen Polanski departing. Neither is it a shock that Gladbach are involved; after all, it was at exactly this point last season – three games in – that they parted ways with Gerardo Seoane.
A club with more prospects and direction would have chosen to move on from Polanski in the summer, but the reality is that Gladbach have few of either. Saturday afternoon’s humiliation at Freiburg – a club enjoying a 100% record, guided by poise and purpose, having spent the Johan Manzambi money wisely – was no bad day at the office but a season in microcosm. The home side cruised into a 2-0 lead inside the first half-hour before the Gladbach captain, Tim Kleindienst, was sent off for a second yellow card (after an utterly avoidable first one). One former Gladbach player, Yannik Engelhardt, scored twice while another, Matthias Ginter, made two assists. It finished 5-0 and could have been way worse.

ROVANIEMI (ANP/AFP) - De Europese Unie moet zich meer inspannen om haar rol in het Arctisch gebied te versterken. Die oproep doen twaalf Europese leiders, onder wie de Duitse bondskanselier Friedrich Merz en de Deense premier Mette Frederiksen, maandag in de Finse stad Rovaniemi. Daar waren zij op uitnodiging van Finland bijeen om tot een verenigd antwoord te komen op de alsmaar toenemende druk op de regio, onder meer vanuit Rusland en de Verenigde Staten.
In hun slotverklaring roepen de twaalf EU-lidstaten op "een meer strategische en proactieve rol" in het Europese deel van het Noordpoolgebied op zich te nemen. Voorzitter van de EU-leiders António Costa, eveneens aanwezig in Rovaniemi, noemde de veiligheid van het gebied een Europese aangelegenheid. "Wat hier gebeurt, is geen regionaal, maar een Europees verhaal."
Naar verwachting presenteert de Europese Commissie in oktober een nieuwe beleidsstrategie voor het Noordpoolgebied. Die moet de komende jaren richting geven aan de EU-visie op het gebied.
BRUSSEL (ANP) - Rusland wordt steeds roekelozer, maakt NAVO-topman Mark Rutte op uit de aanval op een trein tussen Kyiv en NAVO-land Polen. De NAVO heeft volgens hem genoeg mogelijkheden om terug te slaan als zij slachtoffer wordt van bijvoorbeeld een sabotageaanval. Voor het uitstralen van zwakte, als tegenmaatregelen van NAVO-kant uitblijven, zegt hij niet bang te zijn.
De Russische droneaanval van zondag op de spoorlijn, vlak bij de grens met Polen, maakte in Europese hoofdsteden veel los. Europese politici, diplomaten en andere reizigers van en naar Kyiv nemen soms deze verbinding. Volgens Rutte toont de aanval dat Rusland "steeds roekelozer" en "wanhopiger" wordt.
Als Rusland de NAVO zou treffen, staat het bondgenootschap klaar en beschikt het over "alle opties om te antwoorden", verzekerde Rutte tijdens een persconferentie. "Maar we kunnen gewoon niet altijd vertellen wat die zijn." Hij denkt "niet dat het als zwak wordt gezien" als nieuwe NAVO-maatregelen tegen Rusland uitblijven.

Het recept is nu volledig aanwezig om uit te groeien tot de Nederlandse George Floyd: de man die in Rotterdam overleed tijdens zijn arrestatie is de 51-jarige Juan Alfredo Goeloe. Hij werd verdacht van fatbikediefstal, weigerde zich bij aankomst van de politie te legitimeren, verzette zich stevig tegen zijn aanhouding en werd daarop een tot onwel gemaakte. Vanavond is er een stille tocht van de plek waar hij overleed tot aan politiebureau Zuidplein. Er is niet alleen familie van de man aanwezig, maar: "Ook partijen die zich afzetten tegen politiegeweld zullen aan de stille tocht deelnemen, kondigen zij aan." Het 'politiegeweld' wordt nog onderzocht door de Rijksrecherche, maar in tijden van emotie is er helemaal geen ruimte voor nuance. De laatste keer dat zoiets plaatsvond was trouwens eveneens na een fatbikediefstal: de vijftienjarige Jerryson had een vuurwapen op zak en werd na meerdere waarschuwingen door de politie doodgeschoten. Wel, wandel in vrede, lieve mensen.
