PARIJS (ANP/AFP) - De Amerikaanse ambassadeur in Parijs Charles Kushner heeft volgens zijn ambassade een "open en vriendschappelijk" telefoongesprek gevoerd met de Franse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Jean-Noël Barrot. Een bron bij de Franse regering zei dat de ambassadeur heeft beloofd zich niet met binnenlandse kwesties te bemoeien. Daarmee lijkt een diplomatieke ruzie gesust.

Kushner had gesproken over het "terrorisme" in Frankrijk na de dood van de radicaal-rechtse Quentin Deranque. Daarvoor zitten radicaal-linkse mensen vast. Frankrijk stond Kushner niet meer toe om met Franse functionarissen te praten tot hierover een gesprek was geweest. Minister Barrot wilde de ambassadeur namelijk zeggen dat Frankrijk dit soort buitenlandse inmenging niet accepteert.

Volgens de Amerikaanse ambassade hebben de twee diplomaten besproken dat ze allebei graag goede banden onderhouden.

CARACAS (ANP/AFP) - De Venezolaanse autoriteiten hebben tot nu toe 179 gevangenen vrijgelaten onder een nieuwe amnestiewet. Daarnaast hebben 3000 mensen die op borgtocht vrij waren gratie gekregen, meldt Jorge Arreaza die namens het parlement toezicht houdt op de vrijlatingen.

De amnestiewet is een van de grootste veranderingen in het land sinds de Verenigde Staten president Nicolás Maduro uit de macht zetten. Er zitten honderden mensen in de gevangenis, omdat ze zich verzetten tegen zijn autoritaire regering.

Mensen die in aanmerking willen komen voor gratie, moeten daar in de rechtbank voor pleiten. Volgens Arreaza hebben bijna 4300 mensen een aanvraag ingediend. Hij noemt het tempo waarmee de verzoeken behandeld worden "buitengewoon".

Maduro werd door Amerikaanse militairen ontvoerd en vastgezet. Venezuela wordt nu geleid door zijn voormalige vicepresident Delcy Rodríguez.

PARIJS (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - De Franse miljardair Bernard Arnault heeft zijn greep op luxeconcern LVMH verder verstevigd. De rijkste man van Europa en topman van het bedrijf achter merken als Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Hennessy en Tiffany & Co heeft zijn belang in LVMH verhoogd tot boven de 50 procent, is dinsdag bekendgemaakt.

Het belang van de familie is verhoogd naar 50,01 procent, van 49,77 procent aan het einde van vorig jaar. Dit "getuigt van het sterke vertrouwen van Bernard Arnault en zijn familie in de toekomst van LVMH", meldt een woordvoerder van de familie. De Arnaults hadden al het merendeel van de stemrechten in handen. De vijf kinderen van Arnault zijn ook allemaal betrokken bij het bedrijf.

De familie heeft geprofiteerd van een daling van de aandelen van LVMH om haar belang in het bedrijf te vergroten. De aandelen hebben bijna 38 procent van hun waarde verloren sinds de recordstand in april 2023. Dit jaar zijn de aandelen van LVMH zo'n 13 procent minder waard geworden.

When the US supreme court voted 6-3 last Friday to strike down Donald Trump’s tariffs, he was incandescent. Two judges he had elevated – Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett – were suddenly recast as traitors to the cause. Both were, he insinuated, under the sway of foreign interests. The court ruled that the tariffs overstepped the powers the US Congress granted under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Mr Trump responded by reaching for a 1974 trade law, invoking “international payments problems” to slap on a 10% tariff for 150 days.

Mr Trump was moulded by the 1970s. His political DNA was formed in that era’s crises and he governs as if America were still in the Nixon era of shock politics. In some ways there are parallels. The political mobilisation around economic insecurity echoes that period, as does distrust in elite authority. This explains why many populist politicians on the right reach for the 1970s, which fits the mood of decline and rivalry and offers a narrative of “restoring strength”. Internationally, Mr Trump also sees the world through the 1970s lens of industrial rivalry and trade grievance. But the world today is in a far more financialised and interdependent state.

An anonymous reader shares a report: Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich and VP of Developer Community Scott Hanselman have written a paper arguing that senior software engineers must mentor junior developers to prevent AI coding agents from hollowing out the profession's future skills base.

The paper, Redefining the Engineering Profession for AI, is based on several assumptions, the first of which is that agentic coding assistants "give senior engineers an AI boost... while imposing an AI drag on early-in-career (EiC) developers to steer, verify and integrate AI output."

In an earlier podcast on the subject, Russinovich said this basic premise -- that AI is increasing productivity only for senior developers while reducing it for juniors -- is a "hot topic in all our customer engagements... they all say they see it at their companies." [...] The logical outcome is that "if organizations focus only on short-term efficiency -- hiring those who can already direct AI -- they risk hollowing out the next generation of technical leaders," Russinovich and Hanselman state in the paper.
