White-browed Scrubwren
Scientific Name: Sericornis frontalis
Description: White-browed Scrubwrens are mostly dark olive-brown above, while the throat is buff grey and the flanks, belly and rump are dull rufous. They have a white line above the eye and another below the eye. The area around the eye between the lines is black, becoming greyer near the ear. The eye is light cream. Males and females are similar, but the females are slightly duller, particularly on the face. Subtropical and tropical populations are more yellow underneath, males having an almost black facial mask. Other populations along the southern coastline have dark streaking on the throat. Young White-browed Scrubwrens are similar to the adults, but are generally duller, with more chocolate-brown backs and duskier faces.
Similar species: The Large-billed Scrubwren, Sericornis magnirostris, shares part of its range with the White-browed Scrubwren. It is lighter, largely uniform brown in colour and lacks any markings on the face. The larger Yellow-throated Scrubwren, S. citreogularis, has a red-brown eye, is darker on the face and has a yellow wash on the throat, eyebrow and wings.
Distribution: The White-browed Scrubwren is the most common and widespread of Australia's five species of scrubwren. Its range extends from northern Queensland, in a broad coastal band through South Australia to the mid Western Australian coast, and Tasmania.
Habitat: The White-browed Scrubwren lives in rainforest, open forest, woodland and heaths. It is usually seen in pairs, low down in the thick vegetation.
What does it do?
Feeding: White-browed Scrubwrens feed mostly on insects and other small arthropods. Occasionally, they eat some seeds. Birds feed in pairs among the thick vegetation of the forest floor.
Breeding: The nest of the White-browed Scrubwren consists of a large ball of grasses and other plant material, a side entrance tunnel leading to a cup lined with feathers. This is normally located on or near to the ground, in thick vegetation, but may be in a tree fork a few metres high. The eggs are pale blue to pale purple and are spotted with brown at the base.
Calls: The call is an almost persistent harsh chattering of scalding notes, especially when disturbed. White-browed Scrubwrens are also accomplished mimics.

WOZ-waarde stijgt dit jaar meer dan 10 procent

De WOZ-waarde is dit jaar weer fors gestegen. De Waarderingskamer, die controleert of gemeenten de Wet WOZ goed uitvoeren, meldt dat deze gemiddeld 10,6 procent is gestegen vergeleken met 2025.

Gemeenten bepalen de WOZ-waarde van een woning aan de hand van een puntenstelsel. Daarin worden kenmerken van een huis en recente verkoopprijzen van vergelijkbare woningen meegenomen. De WOZ-waarde is gebaseerd op de geschatte waarde van een woning op 1 januari 2025 en volgt de ontwikkeling van de huizenprijzen in 2024. Die waren dat jaar meer dan 10 procent toegenomen.

De Waarderingskamer ziet dat de waardestijging in sommige gemeenten veel groter is. Zo stijgt die in het Groningse Pekela met 20,7 procent en in het Overijsselse Hardenberg met 18,3 procent. Op andere plekken is deze juist veel minder hard omhooggegaan. In het Zeeuwse Sluis is de toename 2,3 procent en op Terschelling 2,9 procent.

Huiseigenaren betalen belasting op basis van de WOZ-waarde. De Waarderingskamer benadrukt dat een stijging niet automatisch betekent dat de belasting evenveel stijgt.

Jarenlang presenteerden bedrijven zich als morele voortrekkers. Duurzaam, inclusief, klimaatbewust, maatschappelijk betrokken. Elk jaar een dik ESG-rapport. Elke kwartaalpresentatie een slide over ‘purpose’. Het leek soms wel alsof het kapitalisme eindelijk therapie had gevolgd en tot zelfinzicht was gekomen. Maar bij al deze grote en veelbelovende woorden moesten we natuurlijk wel geduld hebben. Want verandering kost tijd.

Die fase blijkt ‘verrassend’ kwetsbaar voor politieke windrichtingen. Zodra overheden naar rechts schuiven, regels afzwakken en toezicht relativeren, verdampt het morele vocabulaire. Per direct. Wat gisteren nog kernwaarde heette, heet vandaag overbodige ballast. Verantwoord ondernemen blijkt vooral afhankelijk van de vraag hoeveel tegenmacht er bestaat.

Daar komt bij dat vrijwel al deze maatregelen geld kosten. Schonere productie, betere arbeidsomstandigheden, uitgebreide moderatie, diversiteitsprogramma’s: ze drukken op marges. Of internaliseren kosten die anders zouden worden afgewenteld op de samenleving. In een systeem waarin aandeelhoudersrendement maatgevend blijft, geldt moreel gedrag al snel als concurrentienadeel zodra de politieke bescherming wegvalt.

Klimaat zonder tegenwind

Op klimaatgebied is de terugtocht zichtbaar. Oliebedrijven schuiven investeringen in hernieuwbaar naar de achtergrond. Luchtvaartmaatschappijen relativeren hun net-zero-doelen. Autofabrikanten herontdekken de verbrandingsmotor.

Niet omdat het technisch niet kan, maar omdat het politiek weer mag. Subsidies verdwijnen. Normen worden afgezwakt. Klimaatbeleid wordt geframed als ‘linkse hobby’. In dat vacuüm hervindt de fossiele industrie haar zelfvertrouwen.

Duurzaamheid fungeert hier als façade. Zolang overheden druk uitoefenen, blijft die overeind. Zodra die druk wegvalt, wordt ze een kostenpost die niemand zich vrijwillig wil blijven permitteren. Met de cirkelredenering ‘als wij het niet doen. doet de concurrent het wel’ kom je een heel eind.

Sociale media: vrijheid als vrijbrief

Bij sociale platforms speelt hetzelfde mechanisme. Jarenlang klonk de belofte van veilige online ruimtes. Minder desinformatie. Minder intimidatie. Minder extremisme. Moderatieteams werden uitgebreid. Beleidsregels aangescherpt.

Met de opkomst van autoritaire en populistische regeringen verandert de toon. Regulering wordt weggezet als censuur. Toezicht als bemoeizucht. Platforms voelen politieke rugdekking om hun verantwoordelijkheid te minimaliseren.

Tegelijkertijd is moderatie duur. Menselijke controle schaalt slecht. Juridische afhandeling kost geld. Zodra concurrenten snijden in toezicht, ontstaat druk om mee te bewegen. Wie het netjes blijft doen, loopt financieel achter. En wat in jaren is opgebouwd smolt in enkele maanden weg.

‘Vrijheid van meningsuiting’ krijgt zo de functie van excuus om kosten te besparen, ook al lijkt die nieuw verkregen vrijheid vooral gebruikt te worden om andermans vrijheid te beperken.

Van diversiteit naar bijzaak
Ook diversiteit en inclusie volgen dit patroon. Bedrijven organiseerden trainingen, stelden diversity officers aan en publiceerden inclusierapporten. Niet uit overtuiging, maar onder maatschappelijke druk.

Nu conservatieve partijen gelijkwaardigheid framen als ‘woke-indoctrinatie’, verdwijnt die druk. Programma’s worden afgebouwd. Functies opgeheven. Termen verdwijnen uit jaarverslagen.

Wat resteert, is de kale rekensom: als concurrenten deze investeringen schrappen, wordt volhouden een strategisch risico.

Arbeid, ketens en straffeloosheid

In internationale productieketens herhaalt zich hetzelfde script. Belofte van leefbaar loon. Belofte van veilige fabrieken. Belofte van transparantie.

Zodra handelsakkoorden mensenrechten minder zwaar laten wegen en inspectiediensten worden uitgekleed, verdwijnt toezicht. Westerse bedrijven kijken weg, gesteund door regeringen die ‘concurrentiekracht’ belangrijker vinden dan arbeidsrechten.

Wie blijft investeren in fatsoenlijke ketens, ziet zijn prijzen stijgen. Wie dat nalaat, wint marktaandeel. In afwezigheid van harde regels is de uitkomst voorspelbaar.

Mode: terug naar het bot

De mode-industrie vormt een bijna karikaturaal voorbeeld. Na jaren van body positivity, diversiteit op de catwalk en kritiek op eetstoornissen keert het oude ideaal terug. Extreem dun. Jong. Breekbaar. Dat gebeurt niet toevallig. Diversiteit vraagt casting, begeleiding en soms weerstand tegen adverteerders. Dunne modellen zijn blijkbaar makkelijker te standaardiseren en sluiten aan bij een heroplevend conservatief schoonheidsideaal.

In een concurrerende markt wordt regressie zo opnieuw rationeel gedrag.

Voor zijn of verliezen

In dit systeem ontstaat een perverse logica. Waar bedrijven eerst wachtten totdat concurrenten progressieve stapjes zetten, om schoorvoetend te volgen, wachten ze nu niet af tot iedereen afschaalt. Ze anticiperen. Wie verwacht dat concurrenten hun morele verplichtingen loslaten, doet dat liever als eerste.

Niet achterblijven, maar vooroplopen in versobering. Sneller schrappen. Sneller terug naar de ondergrens. Wie te lang principieel blijft, wordt afgestraft door de markt.

Zo ontstaat een neerwaartse spiraal waarin ‘verantwoordelijkheid’ wordt gezien als naïviteit.

Macht volgt politiek

Al deze voorbeelden hebben dezelfde kern. Bedrijven volgen geen moreel kompas, maar machtsverhoudingen én marktdruk. Wie de regels maakt, bepaalt het gedrag. Wie de prijzen zet, versterkt dat gedrag.

Wanneer progressieve wetgeving en actieve handhaving verdwijnen, verdwijnt ook de bescherming tegen morele onderbieding. Bestuurders spreken over realisme en neutraliteit. In werkelijkheid volgen ze simpelweg het ‘nieuwe politieke midden’.

De illusie van vrijwillige verantwoordelijkheid

Het idee dat bedrijven uit zichzelf maatschappelijk volwassen worden, blijkt telkens weer fictie. Elke verschuiving naar rechts functioneert als vrijbrief, elke kostenbesparing als beloning.

Wat gisteren nog onacceptabel was, wordt vandaag ‘pragmatisch’. Wat gisteren schandaal was, heet nu beleid.

Zonder wettelijke druk, zonder sterke instituties, zonder maatschappelijk tegengewicht, keert het bedrijfsleven terug naar zijn basisstand.

Moraal als bijproduct van macht

Verantwoord ondernemen functioneert in dit systeem niet als overtuiging, maar als bijwerking van politieke druk en concurrentiedwang. Waar regels streng zijn, zijn bedrijven braaf. Waar regels verdwijnen, wint de laagste standaard.

De recente en bliksemsnelle terugtocht is daarom geen verrassing. Ze laat zien hoe dun het morele laagje werkelijk was.

It must surely, sometimes, seem to everyone involved that the name should be Palestine Tragedy Club – but this theatre collective, founded by Alaa Shehada from Jenin in the north of the West Bank, and Sam Beale from the UK, is all about laughter. They are exploring the nature of comedy and standup as a response to being a Palestinian now. This documentary follows the group as they attempt to put together a national tour, with shows in Ramallah, Nablus, Haifa, Nazareth and Jerusalem. In so doing, they encounter the basic problem of struggling through roadblocks, and sheer dismay and horror at the wholesale destruction of the war between Israel and Hamas.

We also see how members of the company find themselves, in effect, in exile in Amsterdam and Berlin and experiencing the existential pain of loneliness and homesickness. Things are further complicated at one stage, by being in London – the seat of empire – for a particular show, making it clear that the British are the imperial villains of all this (it is Britain, not Israel, that is singled out for explicit criticism on stage). I would have liked to see more of the Palestine Comedy Club’s actual show, and more of the way the material is developed and performed, but we do get a very entertaining bit from Shehada as he says that over here, he gets solemn and supportive “mmmm”s instead of laughs – the audiences mulling over it, perhaps laughing later when they’ve had time to think.

“If I could write an entire book on deep frying, I absolutely would,” says Hussain with a laugh. “This is how I cook, this is how I eat, this is how I show love to my family. Everything in there is stuff that my kids absolutely love.” It’s about balance, she says – there are also lovely recipes for soothing plant-based dal and delicious noodles – because “I think anything that’s an extreme version of itself is dangerous”.
