A Guardian investigation with DeSmog reveals thousands of tonnes of fish are illegally turned into fishmeal and oil off the coast of Guinea-Bissau

The only ice factory on Bubaque, an island in west Africa’s Guinea-Bissau, is out of service. Local fishers, such as Pedro Luis Pereira, are forced to source ice from factories on the mainland, about 70km away – a six-hour round trip by boat.

“The machines have been broken for months,” Pereira says, as he pulls in his nets on the shore of the island inside the protected Bijagós archipelago. “We’ve alerted the ministry of fisheries, but so far, no one has come to fix them.”

They were far from home but it refused to let them stay without specific ID to prove they were over 18

My disabled 22-year-old daughter and her 20-year-old sister were turned away late at night by Travelodge Cambridge Orchard Park because staff would not accept that they were over 18. Their rail and student cards showing their dates of birth were not accepted.

I called the hotel and offered to scan their passports but this was refused as well. The customer service helpline was similarly unhelpful. By then it was nearly 10pm and they had nowhere else to go. The 22-year-old is autistic and when she goes anywhere we always have to have her itinerary pre-planned and someone to be with her.

Documentary reflects on how Victorian botanists began to remodel a barren ocean outpost, but omits some crucial environmental and social questions

From the dark belly of the ocean rises Ascension Island, a rocky outpost in the Atlantic Ocean born from volcanic eruptions and sediments accumulated over millions of years. While its formation feels like an act of cosmic creation, much of its landscape is human-made. During the Victorian era, British botanists brought plants to be cultivated locally, transforming a once barren land into a green oasis. The images are poetic, showcasing a stunning variety of flora and fauna; people are rarely seen on screen, their absence adding a touch of eeriness to the atmosphere.

In search of a new adventure, Craig Munns went back to school. Now, at 65, he spends his days examining long-vanished life forms

Craig Munns has a large model of a T rex on his desk. He got it with a magazine subscription two decades ago. One day, a few years ago, he was sitting in his study, which was dense with books and yellow sticky notes and posters charting evolution from single cells upward, and he thought, “What am I going to do next in my life?” And his eyes lit upon the T rex.

Munns had recently taken on a job at the public library in Canberra, but it had always rankled with him that he had not studied for a degree, starting instead as an electronics trainee after he left school in Sydney, Australia. So he decided to enrol as a part-time student. He graduated at 62, with honours in palaeontology from the University of New England in Armidale, NSW.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Honderd verdachten van oplichting zijn vanaf maandag te zien op digitale schermen langs de weg, op stations, in reclames op televisie, op sociale media en op de website van de politie. De verdachten worden eerst onherkenbaar getoond. Als zij zich niet melden, gebeurt dat vanaf 23 maart herkenbaar. Deze campagne wordt naast opsporing van verdachten ingezet om nieuwe daders te ontmoedigen.

Bij oplichting kan het gaan om helpdeskfraude, waar oplichters zich voordoen als bankmedewerkers, maar ook om nepagenten. Het aantal incidenten waarbij iemand zich onterecht uitgeeft als politiemedewerker steeg het afgelopen jaar naar 13.000. In 2024 was dat nog iets meer dan 8.000.

Vorig jaar kwam de 80-jarige Irene Winkel om het leven bij een confrontatie met een nepagent in haar woning in Amsterdam. De drie verdachten in deze zaak verschijnen eind april weer voor de rechter.

F-Game

Jongeren die zich bezighouden met oplichting spreken vaak over F-Game, het fraudespel. "Mensen oplichten en fraude plegen zijn geen spelletjes, maar serieuze misdrijven", aldus de politie. Die ziet dat slachtoffers meestal kwetsbare ouderen zijn en dat de impact op hen groot is. "Het vertrouwen in de medemens en instanties raken ze hierdoor volledig kwijt. Veel slachtoffers doen uit schaamte geen aangifte."

Met de campagne hoopt de politie jongeren te ontmoedigen om zich voor een kleine beloning te laten gebruiken voor dit soort oplichting. "We hopen dat uiteindelijk niemand zich meer zal laten lenen als loopjongen voor deze organisaties en hiermee het fenomeen nepagenten en nepbankmedewerkers zal stoppen", aldus Anne Jan Oosterheert, portefeuillehouder Digitale Criminaliteit van de politie.

Het Openbaar Ministerie heeft voor iedere verdachte afzonderlijk toestemming gegeven voor het gebruik van de bewakingsbeelden in de campagne. De politie denkt dat er meer van dit soort campagnes zullen volgen.

De oorlog in Iran stuwt ook de prijzen van landbouwgewassen. Op de grote grondstoffenmarkt in Chicago worden bijvoorbeeld sojabonen, maïs en tarwe almaar duurder. Consumenten kunnen dit gaan merken als ze boodschappen doen in de supermarkt, al zal de impact van land tot land verschillen.

Palmolie werd volgens persbureau Bloomberg maandag zelfs 10 procent duurder. Dat is de grootste toename sinds 2022. Ook de prijs van sojaolie en tarwe steeg flink.

Door de Iranoorlog is de Straat van Hormuz praktisch afgesloten, waardoor de olie- en gasexport uit het Midden-Oosten wordt afgeknepen. Hierdoor is er meer vraag ontstaan naar op gewassen gebaseerde biobrandstoffen.

Daarnaast gaan zowel de energieprijzen als de meststoffenprijzen hard omhoog, waardoor kosten voor boeren kunnen oplopen. Bovendien zouden zorgen over voedselzekerheid in oorlogstijd sommige landen ertoe kunnen aanzetten om voorraden aan te leggen van basisproducten zoals tarwe. Dit kan de marktprijzen ook aanwakkeren.

BEIROET (ANP) - Human Rights Watch beschuldigt Israël opnieuw van een oorlogsmisdrijf. Volgens onderzoek van de mensenrechtenorganisatie heeft Israël bij een aanval in Zuid-Libanon "illegaal witte fosformunitie gebruikt". Blootstelling aan witte fosfor kan niet alleen leiden tot verminking, maar soms ook de dood tot gevolg hebben.

HRW zegt bewijzen te hebben dat Israëlische legereenheden bij een luchtaanval op 3 maart in het dorp Yohmor witte fosfor hebben ingezet. In Yohmor, dat dicht bij de Israëlische grens ligt, wonen enkele duizenden mensen. Het gebruik van witte fosfor is volgens het gangbare oorlogsrecht niet per se verboden, zij het wel in dichtbevolkte gebieden.

Precies dat laatste is volgens Human Rights Watch nu gebeurd. Het claimt zeven afbeeldingen te hebben geverifieerd en gelokaliseerd waarop te zien is hoe de witte fosfor explodeert boven een woonwijk in Yohmor. Ook het artilleriegeschut dat Israël bij de aanval heeft gebruikt, is bevestigd, zegt HRW. Onder het bewijsmateriaal zijn ook afbeeldingen waarop reddingswerkers te zien zijn die een brand blussen die veroorzaakt is door een fosforexplosie. De organisatie zegt niet te hebben kunnen verifiëren of er directe gewonden waren door de inzet van de omstreden munitie.

Rookgordijnen

Witte fosfor is zeer brandbaar. Militairen gebruiken de chemische stof om gebieden in het donker op te lichten, doelwitten te kunnen markeren of om rookgordijnen te kunnen veroorzaken. Wie eraan wordt blootgesteld, kan ernstige verminkingen oplopen of vergiftigd raken, soms met de dood tot gevolg.

"Het onrechtmatige gebruik van witte fosfor door het Israëlische leger boven woongebieden is uiterst alarmerend en zal ernstige gevolgen hebben voor burgers", aldus Ramzi Kaiss, Libanon-onderzoeker bij Human Rights Watch. "De brandgevaarlijke effecten van witte fosfor kunnen de dood of gruwelijke verwondingen veroorzaken die levenslang lijden tot gevolg hebben."

Gaza-oorlog

Israël is al meerdere malen beschuldigd van het inzetten van witte fosforgranaten, zowel in Libanon als in de Gaza-oorlog, door Amnesty International en Human Rights Watch. Die voorvallen zouden zich hebben voorgedaan in 2023 en 2024. Israël zei zich altijd aan het oorlogsrecht te hebben gehouden.

Sinds de Amerikaans-Israëlische bombardementen op Iran heeft Israël zijn militaire operaties in Libanon ook uitgebreid. Daarbij zijn volgens Libanon tot nu toe zo'n driehonderd doden gevallen. Honderdduizenden mensen zijn al noodgedwongen gevlucht.
