WASHINGTON (ANP/AFP) - De regering-Trump komt terug op haar eerdere aanbeveling om mensen met autisme te behandelen met leucovorin. Er is te beperkt bewijs dat het middel kan werken.

In september had de regering nog gezegd dat ze het gebruik van het medicijn leucovorin - een synthetische vitamine B9 - zou goedkeuren voor de behandeling van autisme. Maar dinsdag trok de Food and Drug Administration (FDA) zich terug, omdat er onvoldoende bewijs zou zijn dat het middel effectief is bij autisme.

De eerste aankondiging kwam destijds van minister van Volksgezondheid Robert F. Kennedy Jr., die al decennialang beweringen verspreidt dat vaccins autisme veroorzaken, beweringen die ook telkens worden weerlegd. Kennedy prees leucovorin, dat gewoonlijk wordt gebruikt om bijwerkingen van chemotherapie te verlichten, aan als een "veelbelovende therapie". Ook Trump loofde leucovorin, als hoop op "een beter leven voor de vele ouders met kinderen met autisme".

WASHINGTON (ANP/RTR/BLOOMBERG) - De olieprijs is dinsdag kortstondig scherp gedaald na het bericht van de Amerikaanse energieminister Chris Wright dat de Amerikaanse marine met succes een olietanker door de Straat van Hormuz had geëscorteerd. Wright meldde dat op X, maar verwijderde de post snel erna weer. Daarna krabbelden de olieprijzen weer op.

"De Amerikaanse marine heeft met succes een olietanker door de Straat van Hormuz geëscorteerd om ervoor te zorgen dat de olie blijft stromen naar de wereldwijde markten", plaatste Wright op het socialmediaplatform. De prijs van Brentolie daalde met 17 procent na de post. Het is onduidelijk waarom hij de post kort daarna verwijderde.

Begin deze maand meldde de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump dat de marine tankers zal begeleiden als dat nodig is. De Straat van Hormuz is momenteel afgesloten en de Iraanse Revolutionaire Garde (IRG) zegt volledige controle over de zeestraat te hebben.

The buildup to the festival had been dominated by talk of civil war, of feuding and internecine conflict. But this was a reminder of the sport’s simple pleasures. Horse and jockey. Fence and turf. Drama and thrills for the ages.

This was a day that jump racing needed. The opening day attendance of 57,242 was the highest for three years. It made Cheltenham feel like a place to be while not bursting at the seams, a balancing act it has not always managed. Most important of all, the racing was competitive and the stars came out to play.

They are all signatories in a letter to Keir Starmer saying the way the war is being conducted is strengthening the regime in Tehran.

Axios reports that Meta has acquired Moltbook, the viral, Reddit-like social network designed for AI agents. Humans are welcome, but only to observe. Axios reports: The deal brings Moltbook's creators -- Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr -- into Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the unit run by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang. Meta did not disclose Moltbook's purchase price. The deal is expected to close mid-March, Meta says, with the pair starting at MSL on March 16. When it launched in late January, Moltbook was labeled the "most interesting place on the internet" by open-source developer and writer Simon Willison. "Browsing around Moltbook is so much fun. A lot of it is the expected science fiction slop, with agents pondering consciousness and identity. There's also a ton of genuinely useful information, especially on m/todayilearned."

In an internal post seen by Axios, Meta's Vishal Shah said existing Moltbook customers can temporarily continue using the platform. "The Moltbook team has given agents a way to verify their identity and connect with one another on their human's behalf," Shah says. "This establishes a registry where agents are verified and tethered to human owners." He added: "Their team has unlocked new ways for agents to interact, share content, and coordinate complex tasks."
