Things can always get worse. Much, much worse. If there is a place below rock bottom, Tottenham seem determined to go there. The Champions League may not be a priority, Igor Tudor publicly declaring survival their only concern, but that didn’t make it any less painful, nor easier to forget. This, instead, will linger for a long time. It wasn’t even the 5-2 defeat that hurt, not really, and it certainly wasn’t their now inevitable exit from Europe: it was how it happened, the opening 20 minutes quite possibly the stupidest, most absurd, most astonishing minutes of football you have ever seen.

If, that is, you can really call it football all; this was a dramatic act of self-destruction that ‘Spursy’ doesn’t get anywhere near, both deeply comic and also desperately sad, the final ridiculous scene of a tragedy, the ultimate humiliation. Only, terrifyingly, that may still be to come, because if this the Metropolitano was a testing ground for the fight against relegation as the manager said, the conclusion can only be that the abyss is opening up. There could be no joy, certainly, in watching poor Antonin Kinsky heading down the tunnel, broken and withdrawn on just 17 minutes, inconsolable after glaring errors led to two of the goals that had already given Atlético a 3-0 lead.

NEW YORK (ANP/RTR) - Door de Amerikaanse en Israëlische luchtaanvallen sinds 28 februari zijn volgens de Iraanse ambassadeur bij de VN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, meer dan 1300 burgers gedood. Bijna 8000 woningen van burgers zijn verwoest volgens de gezant.

Onder de doden zijn rond de 170 mensen in een lagere meisjesschool in Minab, voornamelijk schoolmeisjes. Op de eerste dag van de aanvallen werd de school, die vlak bij een basis van de Iraanse Islamitische Revolutionaire Garde en niet ver van de Straat van Hormuz stond, getroffen.

Volgens de ambassadeur zijn 9669 burgerdoelen door de luchtaanvallen getroffen.

ZEVENBERGEN (ANP) - De meeste partijen die meedoen aan de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen in Moerdijk staan nog achter het besluit om het dorp Moerdijk mogelijk op te geven. Het dorp zou plaats moeten maken voor uitbreiding van het haven- en industriegebied. Zeven van de tien lijsttrekkers zeiden tijdens een debat dat ze dit nog steeds als de beste optie zien. "Iedereen die vanavond zou beloven dat deze opgave wel weggaat en niet in Moerdijk zal landen, doet een valse belofte", aldus Danny Dingemans (VVD).

Eind 2025 gaf de gemeenteraad van Moerdijk onder veel randvoorwaarden aan het dorp Moerdijk te willen opgeven om ruimte te maken voor onder meer grote energieprojecten van Powerport. VVD, CDA, Moerdijk Lokaal, D66, ChristenUnie, GroenLinks-PvdA en BBM/BBB Bondgenoot zien geen andere opties. "Als alles los neergezet wordt in onze gemeente, zonder enige regie, dan zijn er straks 20.000 inwoners van onze gemeente de dupe", aldus Inge Kuijpers (D66). Het Rijk en de provincie Noord-Brabant zouden in december een besluit nemen over de voorkeursrichting van Powerport, maar stelden dat uit tot juni.

Pauline Joosten (Moerdijk Lokaal) noemde de komst van Powerport "onafwendbaar, of we het nu leuk vinden of niet". Zij vindt het belangrijk dat de gemeente om tafel zit en meepraat over bijvoorbeeld het compenseren van bewoners die willen vertrekken. "Wij staan het dichtst bij de inwoners; het Rijk en de provincie staan op afstand en wij laten het niet gebeuren dat zij gaan bepalen hoe inwoners gecompenseerd worden."

Dingemans ziet dat er "nu al tien concrete projecten" zijn. Daarom moet de gemeente de regie pakken om inwoners "mee te nemen en compensatie aan te bieden". Als je dat niet doet, neem je een enorm onverantwoord risico, stelde hij.

AT&T plans to invest more than $250 billion over the next five years to expand U.S. telecom infrastructure for the AI age. The company says it will also hire thousands of technicians while partnering with AST SpaceMobile to extend coverage to remote areas. Reuters reports: Rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and connected devices has prompted telecom operators to invest heavily in fiber and 5G networks as they also seek to fend off intensifying competition from cable broadband providers. AT&T, which has about 110,000 employees in the U.S., said the new hires will help build and maintain its infrastructure. The outlay includes capital expenditure and other spending, the company said.

The spending will focus on expanding its fiber and wireless networks, including accelerating deployment of fiber broadband, 5G home internet and satellite connectivity to extend coverage across urban, suburban and rural areas. [...] AT&T is also working with satellite partner AST SpaceMobile to expand connectivity to remote regions where traditional network infrastructure is difficult to deploy. The company said it would continue spending on the FirstNet network built for first responders and bolster investment in network security and artificial intelligence-driven threat detection.
