Maarten Steinbuch vergat acht van de twaalf boodschappen te scannen bij de Albert Heijn. Hij kon kiezen tussen de politie erbij halen of een winkelverbod van twee jaar. De professor aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) koos het laatste. Maar eigenlijk heeft hij een veel betere oplossing.

Steinbuch was afgeleid omdat hij net halsoverkop was teruggekomen van vakantie omdat zijn vrouw ziek was, een blindedarmontsteking bleek later. Maar de vergeetachtigheid kwam hem duur te staan. Toevallig werd hij eruit gepikt en had hij dus twee derde van zijn boodschappen niet afgerekend.

Het kassasysteem zou volgens de professor meer rekening moeten houden met mensen die er met hun hoofd niet bij zijn of gewoon vergeten hun boodschappen te scannen. "Daarbij denk ik dat het ook goed is om het personeel daarop te trainen, zeker met de vergrijzing van de bevolking.”

Steinbuch weet ook enkele vrij eenvoudige verbeteringen. "Als je de scanner terugzet, zou er bijvoorbeeld een duidelijk signaal moeten komen dat je nog even moet controleren of alles klopt. En bij de kassa zou een groot display kunnen tonen hoeveel items je hebt gescand. Als daar bij mij had gestaan: ‘U heeft vier producten gescand, klopt dit?’ had ik meteen ‘nee’ kunnen drukken en het kunnen corrigeren. We hebben het over één of twee snelle tussenstapjes die veel ellende kunnen voorkomen.”

EIBAR (ANP) - Wielrenner Paul Seixas heeft zijn derde etappe gewonnen in de Ronde van Baskenland. De 19-jarige Fransman van Decathlon CMA CGM versloeg in de vijfde rit met start en finish in Eibar medevluchter Florian Lipowitz uit Duitsland en verstevigde zijn leidende positie in het algemeen klassement. De Spanjaard Javier Romo finishte als derde op iets meer dan een minuut.

Seixas won eerder de openingstijdrit en de eerste etappe. Het is zijn vijfde zege dit seizoen. In het algemeen klassement heeft het Franse talent 2.30 minuten voorsprong op Lipowitz.

Uit een grote groep met vroege vluchters reed Steven Kruijswijk even aan de leiding, samen met de Fransman Baptiste Veistroffer. Op de beklimming van de Krabelin kwamen de klassementsrenners terug. Ben Healy ging in de aanval met Marc Soler, maar op 30 kilometer van de streep versnelde Seixas zelf en kon alleen Lipowitz in het spoor blijven. De Duitser begon de sprint in Eibar vroeg, maar kon de Fransman niet voorblijven.

De Ronde van Baskenland eindigt zaterdag met een heuvelachtige rit van Goizper-Antzuola naar Bergara over 135 kilometer.

TEHERAN (ANP/AFP/RTR) - De Iraanse parlementsvoorzitter Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf heeft opnieuw beklemtoond dat Iran wil dat er eerst een wapenstilstand in Libanon komt voordat er tussen zijn land en de VS onderhandeld kan worden. Hij eiste vrijdag ook dat bevroren Iraanse tegoeden worden vrijgegeven voor de onderhandelingen beginnen.

De Iraanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Abbas Araghchi, herhaalde de eis dat Israël de aanvallen op Libanon stopt. Hij meent dat anders de onderhandelingen zinloos zullen zijn. Volgens Iran en bemiddelaar Pakistan is Libanon onderdeel van de wapenstilstand die afgelopen week werd gesloten voor twee weken. Israël en de Verenigde Staten zeggen dat dat niet zo is.

In Islamabad staan zaterdag onderhandelingen gepland tussen Iran en de VS over een einde aan de door de VS en Israël begonnen oorlog. Araghchi en Ghalibaf zouden erheen gaan. De voornaamste Amerikaanse onderhandelaar vicepresident JD Vance is onderweg.

ROERMOND (ANP) - Kamil E., die een celstraf uitzit voor betrokkenheid bij de moord op Peter R. de Vries, is gewond geraakt bij een steekpartij in de gevangenis van Roermond. Dat bevestigt zijn advocaat Ayse Çimen, na berichtgeving door het AD.

Het incident gebeurde afgelopen maandag. E. is door een medegevangene meerdere malen in nek en hoofd gestoken. Volgens de advocaat verkeerde de dader in een psychisch verwarde toestand.

"Het lijkt er niet op dat het incident iets te maken heeft met de zaak Peter R. de Vries", aldus de advocaat. "Hij stond na het incident stijf van de adrenaline en was erg geschrokken. Hij is ter plaatse behandeld aan zijn verwondingen en maakt het op dit moment goed."

Het Amsterdamse gerechtshof veroordeelde E. in december vorig jaar tot 27,5 jaar cel voor zijn aandeel in de moord op Peter R. de Vries (64). Hij bestuurde de vluchtauto en kon kort na de aanslag op De Vries worden aangehouden, samen met schutter Delano G.

All veiled the reality of conflict. Euphemism was long the preferred choice for the US military. Spokespeople discussed “collateral damage” rather than civilian deaths and “surgical strikes”, framing destruction as both precise and part of a necessary and ultimately healing process. Donald Trump chooses naked menace instead. This week he issued a genocidal threat against Iran, having previously threatened to bomb it “back to the stone age” and destroy bridges and power plants – schools and medical facilities having already been pulverised. He said that he was “not at all” concerned about potential war crimes.

Suspect arrested but not identified and has allegedly made similar threats to OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters

A 20-year-old man allegedly tossed a molotov cocktail at the home of Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, before the sun rose on Friday, according to statements from San Francisco police.

The suspect, who allegedly threw the explosive at the North Beach residence around 4.12am, has been arrested but not identified. The same person allegedly threatened to torch OpenAI’s headquarters in the city.

Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments and the Oscar-winning film One Battle After Another are grim parables of today. But they are not without hope

As Margaret Atwood has said, all dystopian fiction is “really about now”. No wonder the genre is flourishing. This week Atwood’s bleak vision of a future America as a patriarchal theocracy returned to TV screens with the adaptation of her prize-winning 2019 novel The Testaments, the long-awaited sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, set in a chillingly recognisable militarised America, swept the Oscars last month.

Back in 1984 when Atwood wrote The Handmaid’s Tale, she feared that its central premise – that the US could be transformed from a liberal democracy into Gilead, a theocratic dictatorship after a coup – was too outrageous to convince readers. She need not have worried. By the time the novel was made into the award-winning TV series in 2017, it was all too believable. Arriving just after Donald Trump’s election in 2016 and the rollback of women’s rights, the show felt made for the moment. Atwood was hailed as a prophet. The red-and-white handmaid robes became a symbol of female defiance across the globe. “For a long time we were going away from Gilead and then we turned around and started going back,” Atwood said of her decision to write a follow-up more than 30 years later.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from The Drive: An auto dealer software company is pitching AI-powered kiosks designed to replace car salesmen on showroom floors. Automotive News says the industry is "skeptical." But be honest -- would you really rather deal with the average car lot shark than a computer?

Epikar, a South Korean company that cooks up digital management solutions for car dealers, has named its new AI invention the Pikar Genie. The idea is that customers can talk to this device, ask it product questions, and basically do everything you'd do with a car salesman except for actually closing the deal and signing paperwork. Renault, BMW, and Volvo are already using some Epikar products at South Korean dealerships, but this new customer-facing AI product is still in its infancy.

AN reported that "Renault assigns three salespeople to its Seoul showroom enhanced with Epikar automation compared with six for other Renault showrooms in South Korea," according to Epikar CEO Bosuk Han. The company's now looking to expand into America and is apparently already testing its products at at least one dealership stateside. Car-dealer consultant Fleming Ford (Director of Strategic Growth at NCM Associates) said U.S. dealerships "aren't ready for fully automated showrooms."

"The showroom isn't just where you buy a car," Automotive News quoted him saying. "It's where you decide who to trust to help you to choose the right car."
