NEW YORK (ANP) - Botic van de Zandschulp behoort weer tot de beste veertig tennissers van de wereld. De 30-jarige Nederlander bereikte afgelopen week de kwartfinales op de US Open en steeg daardoor dertig posities op de wereldranglijst, van de 70e naar de 40e.

Van de Zandschulp is daarmee nu de beste Nederlander. Tallon Griekspoor, die in New York in de eerste ronde werd uitgeschakeld door de latere Amerikaanse finalist Ben Shelton, won één positie en is nu de mondiale nummer 55. Jesper de Jong neemt de 98e plaats in op de wereldranglijst.

Aan de top is niets veranderd. De Italiaan Jannik Sinner voert de lijst aan, voor de Duitse US Open-winnaar Alexander Zverev en de Spanjaard Carlos Alcaraz.

Bij de vrouwen loste de Kazachse Elena Rybakina de Belarussische Aryna Sabalenka af als nummer 1 van de wereld. Suzan Lamens is op de 182e plaats de beste Nederlandse.

Een dag later bleek dat de piloot diezelfde dag al gered was, maar de onderstaande boordschutter moest zwaargewond twee dagen 'overleven en ontwijken' totdat Amerikaanse commando's hem van een bergtop trokken. Bij de redding van de piloot werden 21 vliegtuigen ingezet, maar bij de veel complexere redding van de boordschutter maar liefst 155 vliegtuigen, waaronder 64 straaljagers, 48 tankers, 13 reddingstoestellen, 4 zware bommenwerpers en 92 speciale eenheden op de grond. Afijn, van dat verhaal nu dus de beelden, en een lang interview met de boordschutter zelf. Leuk detail ook; de helikopter waar de twee commando's uit verschijnen om de boordschutter te redden is geblurred, dus we zijn heel benieuwd wat voor geheime (aangepaste) SOAR-machine dat nou weer is - we vermoeden een stealthy Black Hawk. Het gerucht dat de boordschutter gevonden werd met een langeafstands-hartslagdetector is zeer waarschijnlijk wel een stedelijk mythe (zo zeg je dat in het Nederlands). Michael Bay heeft de filmrechten overigens gekocht, dus we hopen dat - naar goed gebruik op Iraans grondgebied - de Transformers ook mee doen.

In both cases, a healthy dose of common sense might have led to a different outcome – and Pro Ref later admitted that Haaland’s goal should not have stood. Still, it’s tough to argue that the final result was harsh on United. Foden’s dismissal gave the hosts a huge opportunity they failed to take, their best chance falling to Bryan Mbeumo in stoppage time. Michael Carrick began his reign with a 2-0 home derby win against 11 men in January, so this felt like a backwards step for the manager, unable to find a way to control the game. Carrick also bemoaned City’s two days of extra rest after Champions League games this week – but chose to keep Fernandes and others on for 90 minutes in the 4-0 stroll past Sabah. Register of British Slave Traders reveals how deeply the trafficking of Africans was embedded in the country’s politics, economy, institutions and culture

Two obstacles have prevented us from appreciating the significance of the slave trade in British history. The first arose from the abolition campaign, which finally overcame opposition in parliament in 1807. The abolitionists promoted the idea that opposition to the slave trade flowed naturally from British values: justice, freedom and Christian benevolence. The success of this strategy obscured the role those same British values had played in supporting the trafficking. Today, Britain’s leaders place abolition in the pantheon of great and definitive national moments.

The second obstacle has been the ingrained tendency of the British to offshore the causes and effects of African chattel slavery to the Americas. According to this view, slavery, and the racial thinking it engendered, was an American, not European concern. But Europeans transported the great majority of enslaved African people to the Americas and reaped huge advantages from doing so. These advantages reshaped European societies.
