On the morning of 4 June, when I heard the news of Marjane Satrapi’s death, I was stunned. I simply could not believe it. Although I had met her only a handful of times in person – despite having lived in Paris for 16 years and having contributed to her book Woman, Life, Freedom – I felt a deep connection to her work and legacy.

Our collaboration on that book took place mostly through email correspondence, but I always held her in the highest regard. I admired her intelligence, her extraordinary sense of humour and, above all, her remarkable gift for visual storytelling.

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De AEX-index op de Amsterdamse aandelenbeurs is vrijdag met verlies gesloten. Betalingsdienstverlener Adyen was de grootste daler in de hoofdindex, naar verluidt door een negatief analistenrapport over het bedrijf. Ook de chipfondsen stonden bij de verliezers.

Adyen ging bijna 9 procent omlaag. Het analistenrapport zou komen van de Amerikaanse beleggingsadviseur Cleveland Research, aldus persbureau Bloomberg. Daarin wijzen kenners van Cleveland Research volgens Bloomberg op zaken als toenemende concurrentie voor Adyen en verlies van marktaandeel.

De chipbedrijven ASMI, Besi en ASML verloren tot 4,3 procent, in navolging van de koersverliezen in de Amerikaanse en Aziatische chipsector. Staalproducent ArcelorMittal had het ook lastig in de AEX met een min van 4,7 procent.

Unilever

De AEX eindigde 0,6 procent lager op 1041,10 punten. De MidKap zakte 0,4 procent tot 1077,42 punten. De beurzen in Parijs en Frankfurt daalden tot 0,8 procent. De FTSE 100 in Londen steeg licht.

Unilever was de sterkste stijger in de Amsterdamse hoofdgraadmeter met een koerswinst van ruim 3 procent. Verffabrikant AkzoNobel steeg 1,2 procent. Het aandeel won een dag eerder al 3 procent aan waarde na een koopadvies van zakenbank Citi.

Heineken

Heineken klom 1,9 procent. Belangrijke aandeelhouders roepen de bierbrouwer op snel duidelijkheid te geven over de opvolger van de eind mei vertrokken topman Dolf van den Brink. Ook willen enkele grote investeerders dat Heineken breekt met de aloude traditie om interne kandidaten te benoemen. Ze willen een externe kandidaat om het concern er weer bovenop te helpen, meldde zakenkrant FT.

In de MidKap nam biotechnoloog Pharming de leiding met een plus van meer dan 3 procent, gevolgd door bouwer Heijmans die 2,5 procent hoger werd gezet na een flinke verhoging van het koersdoel door ING. Metalenspecialist AMG was de grootste daler bij de middelgrote fondsen op het Damrak met een verlies van 4 procent.

Air France-KLM

Luchtvaartcombinatie Air France-KLM zakte 1,2 procent in de MidKap door een verlaging van het beleggingsadvies door de Britse bank Barclays.

De olieprijzen toonden minnen tot 2,6 procent.

PARIJS (ANP) - Tennisser Alexander Zverev heeft zich geplaatst voor de finale op Roland Garros. De Duitse nummer 3 van de wereld was in de halve finale in vier sets te sterk voor Jakub Menšík uit Tsjechië: 7-5 6-2 3-6 6-3.

In de finale treft Zverev de winnaar van de partij tussen de Italianen Matteo Arnaldi en Flavio Cobolli. Zverev, die nog nooit een grandslamtoernooi won, is de grote favoriet voor de eindzege in Parijs. De geblesseerde Carlos Alcaraz ontbreekt op Roland Garros en Jannik Sinner en Novak Djokovic werden eerder al uitgeschakeld.

MOSKOU (ANP/RTR/AFP) - De Russische president Vladimir Poetin ziet vooralsnog geen reden om persoonlijk zijn Oekraïense ambtgenoot Volodymyr Zelensky te ontmoeten. Die publiceerde donderdag een open brief aan de Russische leider met dat verzoek en de vraag om een concrete afspraak te maken.

Volgens Zelensky is het voorbehouden aan leiders om kwesties als een vredesakkoord te bespreken. Hij zei daarbij bereid te zijn een staakt-het-vuren in acht te nemen zolang de besprekingen lopen.

Kremlinwoordvoerder Dmitri Peskov zei donderdagavond dat Poetin de brief nog niet onder ogen had gekregen, maar dat Zelensky "ieder moment" welkom is in Moskou. Zelensky had voorgesteld op neutraal terrein af te spreken en noemde landen die daar mogelijk toe bereid zijn, zoals Turkije.

Volgens Poetin dient het alleen Oekraïne om nu af te spreken en een tijdelijk bestand af te kondigen. "Laat de experts hun werk doen, met oplossingen komen - dan kunnen we afspreken", aldus Poetin.

EMANUEL: My recent story about Google employees internally sharing memes about how they hate the company’s AI product took a bit more time than it should because I had to recreate all the memes you see in that article. Rather than screenshot and repost the images Google employees shared with me, I went to imgflip.com/memegenerator and recreated the meme from scratch, making it look as close to the original as possible.

I did this in order to protect my sources at Google. It might be unlikely, but it is possible that resharing the actual memes I was sent could help management identify who was sharing them. How dangerous doing something like that depends on the nature of the images, the company, the position the source is in, how the image was accessed and shared, and many other factors. At the end of the day, I felt that it’s better to take this extra step than not. The “original” images didn’t add that much to the story, and the risk to sources is not zero. Memegen, the internal Google meme generator in question here, has also been a source of controversy at the company before. I’ve heard but can’t confirm that has led to firings in the past, so better safe than sorry.
