MIDDELBURG (ANP) - Het Franse verkrachtingsslachtoffer Gisèle Pelicot heeft in Middelburg de Four Freedoms Award (Freedom from Fear) uitgereikt gekregen. Die ontving de Française, die internationaal bekendheid verwierf door het openbare proces tegen haar verkrachters, van modeontwerper en vrouwenrechtenambassadeur Olcay Gulsen.
Pelicot was jarenlang het slachtoffer van seksueel misbruik. Haar toenmalige echtgenoot drogeerde haar herhaaldelijk, waarna hij haar verkrachtte zodra ze bewusteloos was. Daartoe ronselde hij ook tientallen andere mannen, en filmde hij veel van de wandaden.
Het massaproces dat volgde wilde Pelicot bewust publiek doen. Naar eigen zeggen om de schaamte niet bij het slachtoffer, maar bij de dader te houden. Ze groeide uit tot een gelauwerd strijder voor vrouwenrechten en werd veel geprezen om haar moed.
Naast Pelicot kregen in Middelburg onder anderen ook de Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky en het Oekraïense volk een zogenoemde Four Freedoms Award uitgereikt.

In winkelcentrum Keizerswaard in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde is donderdagmiddag een overval geweest op een juwelierszaak. Drie overvallers kwamen de zaak binnen, één van hen had een vuurwapen. Ze zijn er met sieraden vandoor gegaan. Een van de drie werd even later opgepakt door de politie.
