TIVAT (ANP) - De Duitse bondskanselier Friedrich Merz vindt dat de Europese Unie "moet laten zien dat ze uit te breiden is en bereid is tot uitbreiding". Daar wil hij het over hebben op de top van de Europese Unie en de Westelijke Balkan in Montenegro.

Dat de EU in 2013 voor het laatst een nieuw lid verwelkomde, toont volgens hem "tekortkomingen aan de kant van de EU".

Duitsland en Frankrijk hebben een voorstel gedaan voor een gefaseerde toetreding, wat onder meer zou betekenen dat kandidaat-lidstaten al voor hun toetreding kunnen profiteren van economische voordelen. Merz vertelde bij aankomst bij de top dat er nog wel vragen openstaan. "Die moeten we samen beantwoorden, maar boven alles moet het duidelijk zijn dat dit deel van Europa binnen de toekomst van de Europese Unie hoort."

Europese Commissievoorzitter Ursula von der Leyen noemde dat bij aankomst bij de top een interessant plan, waar tijdens de bijeenkomst over zal worden gesproken.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Als het Outbreak Management Team (OMT) adviesvragen kreeg rondom coronamaatregelen, bijvoorbeeld vanuit het ministerie van Volksgezondheid, waren die soms zo specifiek dat "je je daar kriegelig bij voelde", zei Jaap van Dissel vrijdag. Volgens de toenmalige OMT-voorman was het niet altijd mogelijk dat het team adviesvragen kon beantwoorden.

"Het was niet altijd onze taak, of niet mogelijk", zei Van Dissel. Hij gaf als voorbeeld dat het OMT destijds niet de specifieke sluitingstijd van supermarkten zou moeten bepalen, "vijf uur of half zes".

Volgens Van Dissel werd alles gewogen met het oog op de uitbraak, en hoeveel ruimte er was voor versoepelingen. "Maar het was een politieke keuze of bioscopen open konden en restaurants niet, bij wijze van spreken. Dat was niet aan ons. Maar als we niet aan de vraag konden beantwoorden, dan gaven we dat wel aan."

Van Dissel vindt dat het zogenoemde Bestuurlijk Afstemmingsoverleg (BAO), verantwoordelijk voor de toetsing van het OMT, veel zichtbaarder had moeten zijn.

Raspberry Pi expects first-half profits of at least $38 million from shipments of more than 4 million units, putting it close to the roughly $42 million analysts had forecast for the entire year. Investors piled in after the update, pushing Raspberry Pi shares up nearly 20 percent and more than tripling the Cambridge-based firm’s value since January. The most interesting detail, however, was tucked away beneath the headline numbers. Raspberry Pi warned that pricing and availability of DRAM and non-volatile memory remain challenging, a familiar complaint across the industry as AI infrastructure builders continue vacuuming up components. To ensure it meets production targets, the company said it intends to make strategic purchases of memory inventory and will "appropriately utilize" its debt facilities throughout the year. Not so long ago, Raspberry Pi's biggest supply-chain challenge was making enough boards for eager tinkerers and classrooms. The firm increasingly looks less like a hobbyist hardware vendor and more like a company navigating the same semiconductor supply chain headaches as much larger technology firms. Earlier this year it raised prices on some products as memory costs climbed, while executives have repeatedly pointed to component availability as a key business risk. At least Raspberry Pi has a problem that many hardware vendors would happily take. Customers are still buying enough boards to keep the memory buyers busy. Still, Raspberry Pi said first-half profitability benefited from lower-cost DRAM inventory acquired before memory prices moved higher. As that stock is consumed, margins are expected to moderate during the second half of the year. Still, management seems willing to sacrifice some profitability to secure supply. It turns out the AI boom affects more than datacenter operators. Even Raspberry Pi is now playing the DRAM market. ®

Simeon Barclay takes that idea one step further in his work, because he knows that even if the club would have him, he’d never be truly accepted anyway. He calls his show in Southampton “a lament of sorts, to access and loss”. It comes just a few weeks after he got nominated for the Turner prize, and it’s a damn fine argument for why he should probably win it.

This is an exhibition all about exclusion, about trying to fit in but never quite managing. It’s razor-sharp, funny, pop-cultural, obtuse conceptual art about growing up black in Britain, about trying to make it and knowing you’re bound to fail, because the system is geared towards failure.
