Cutting UPFs from our grocery list was expensive, laborious and time-consuming

Grocery shopping looks different these days. On Saturday mornings, instead of the local supermarket, I’m at the farmers’ market, loading up on fish, meat, apples, cheese and berries – enough for a family of four.

But it’s not a cheap excursion; our weekly grocery spend is now higher than it was when we decided to try to cut ultra-processed foods (UPFs) from our diet five years ago.

In 2021, we spent $158.63 on cereal; in 2025, the total was $34.34.

Our yoghurt costs went from $260.29 in 2021 to $24.27 in 2025.

We no longer buy protein bars, which cost us $261.04 in 2021.

Our peak expenditure on frozen chicken tenders was in 2020, when we spent $159.76. For the past two years we haven’t bought any.

Butter more than quadrupled between 2021 and 2025, to $234.22.

The total in the sugar column went from $9.47 to $83.10 (I did a lot more baking last year).

The biggest leap was for fruit and vegetables: $2,578.32 in 2021 became $5,706.36 last year.

In 2021, we started buying meat that was humanely raised by farmers and ranchers using regenerative agriculture practices. We spent a lot in this category, almost $2,500 on raw beef and chicken (the previous year, we spent about $1,500). The following year, 2022, we dropped our meat expenditure down to about $1,000 by eating a lot less of it, and more dried beans.

BOEDAPEST (ANP/AFP) - De Hongaarse verkiezingswinnaar Péter Magyar zegt dat zijn land alle arrestatiebevelen van het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) zal uitvoeren en dat dus ook de Israëlische premier Benjamin Netanyahu zou worden aangehouden als hij Hongarije betreedt. Dat is opmerkelijk, omdat Magyar net Netanyahu heeft uitgenodigd om later dit jaar in Boedapest op bezoek te komen.

Het ICC vaardigde in 2024 een arrestatiebevel uit tegen Netanyahu vanwege oorlogsmisdaden en misdaden tegen de menselijkheid in de Gazastrook. De huidige Hongaarse premier Viktor Orbán verzette zich tegen die beslissing en nodigde zijn Israëlische ambtgenoot ook al uit. Netanyahu reisde vorig jaar april inderdaad naar Boedapest en werd daar niet gearresteerd.

Sterker nog, Orbán kondigde aan zijn land helemaal terug te trekken uit het ICC. Maar Magyar is na zijn grote verkiezingsoverwinning van plan om die beslissing terug te draaien. Dat zou hij ook in een telefoongesprek met Netanyahu hebben gezegd.

ROTTERDAM (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - De aanvoer van kerosine naar Europese luchthavens is verstoord door meer militair gebruik van een pijpleidingennetwerk vanuit Rotterdam, zegt een brandstofhandelaar. Onder andere het belangrijke vliegveld van Frankfurt zou zijn getroffen.

In maart en april werd extra kerosine voor de strijdkrachten vervoerd via het zogeheten CEPS-netwerk, zegt Alkagesta-topman Orchan Roestamov. Daardoor kon minder worden geleverd aan commerciële klanten, hoorde hij van collega-handelaars. Terwijl de luchtvaart al kampt met prijsstijgingen en vreest voor tekorten van vliegtuigbrandstof door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten.

De CEPS-pijpleidingen stammen uit de Koude Oorlog en worden beheerd door de NAVO en lidstaten als Nederland. De Rotterdamse haven is een cruciale schakel. Ook Schiphol krijgt soms kerosine via het netwerk.

When we think of “invasive species,” perhaps zebra mussels or kudzu vine spring to mind. Both have flourished in their non-native environments and continue to threaten other native organisms. Invasive species aren’t inherently bad—they’re just trying to survive—but by definition, they’re likely to disrupt local ecosystems and even cause billions of dollars worth of damage each year. So, what does one California city have to say about its burgeoning population of… peacocks?

Introduced by a businessman and land baron named Elias Lucky Baldwin more than a century ago, the avian population has long called the area home. Over the years, though, as the originally open area filled with homes and commercial strips, efforts by local residents end up at odds, as some would like to protect the birds and others would prefer to see them sent away altogether. In a short film titled “Our Neighbors, the Peacocks,” filmmaker Callie Barlow traces the unusual history of peafowl in Los Angeles County through the eyes of some of its current residents.

Arcadia, California, sits in the San Gabriel Valley about 45 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Dozens of peacocks, which are carefully watched over by some and detested by others, meander through residents’ yards, traipse around on rooftops, peck at cars, call from trees, and of course, display their beautiful feathers—especially during mating season.

In her short documentary, Barlow invites locals to share their love—or loathing—for the vibrant birds as she highlights how Arcadia’s history of protecting the birds has perhaps led to something of an overpopulation problem. Nearby neighborhoods participate in relocation programs, while Arcadia’s birds are protected, and opinions about how to deal with growing numbers land all along the spectrum.

“‘Our Neighbors, the Peacocks’ resists the urge to resolve the tension it so clearly lays out,” says Jason Sondhi, who selected the film for Short of the Week. “Instead, it leans into a modest but resonant idea articulated by its director that living alongside these animals might require ‘putting aside your own discomforts to find a deeper meaning in nature.'”
