Keep this up and Crystal Palace’s European adventure could end in yet another trophy for Oliver Glasner. Agents would not allow Pavel Talankin to carry statuette for Mr Nobody Against Putin onto flight from New York

The Oscar statuette belonging to Pavel Talankin, star and co-director of the Academy award-winning documentary Mr Nobody Against Putin, has disappeared after officials at New York’s John F Kennedy airport confiscated it before he boarded a flight, claiming it could be used as a weapon.

Talankin, whose documentation of Russia’s propaganda machine in grade schools won international acclaim, told Deadline that he has brought the statuette on several flights without incident. But when he arrived at JFK’s terminal 1 on Wednesday morning, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents said he could not take the 8.5lb trophy on board because it posed a security risk.

There was a sheepish look on Lucas Digne’s face and for the Portuguese referee, João Pinheiro, it was a case of reviewing whether the ball was out of play and not if the Aston Villa defender had handled inside the box. Even Digne wouldn’t dispute that bit. Digne naively raised both hands, presuming the ball would bounce out of play, but Omari Hutchinson kept the phase alive and Nottingham Forest were presented with a chance to strike the first blow in this Europa League semi-final.

Chris Wood made no mistake from 12 yards, his penalty flawless. Unai Emery tried to gesture for calm as Forest’s supporters went berserk and their players slowly moseyed back towards their half. For so long, it seemed Emiliano Martínez would be Villa’s hero, his improbable save to prevent Igor Jesus from scoring a first-half opener rivalling his stop to deny Nicolás Domínguez here last season, which earned him the Premier League’s save of the season accolade.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Twee pelotons uit Frankrijk en Duitsland komen Nederland helpen met het bestrijden van natuurbranden. Dat zegt Anton Slofstra, commandant Brandweer Nederland, op Radio 1. In totaal zijn dat acht voertuigen die speciaal voor natuurbranden bedoeld zijn en bijbehorende bemensing en commandovoering. Ook krijgt Nederland een helikopter te leen, waar een grote waterzak onder kan worden gehangen.

Door de natuurbranden die woensdag en donderdag in onder meer 't Harde, Oirschot en Weert woeden, raakt de Nederlandse brandweer overbelast. Daarom heeft het Nationaal CrisisCentrum (NCC), dat onderdeel is van het ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid, een uitvraag om hulp gedaan onder EU-lidstaten.

"Dat is vrij uniek en hebben we nog nooit eerder gedaan", zegt Slofstra. Het Landelijk Actiecentrum Natuurbranden, waar zowel het Rijk als regionale partijen met de brandweer overleggen, zei donderdag "wel een beetje op het eind van ons kunnen" te zitten.

Voorzorgsmaatregel

Toch komt de uitvraag volgens Slofstra als voorzorgsmaatregel. "We hebben vandaag bijna alles in moeten zetten wat we hebben, zeker onze specialistische eenheden. Wij hebben nu Europese bijstand gevraagd, want mochten we meer nodig hebben en je het op dat moment pas gaat vragen, dan ben je te laat."

Eén peloton is volgens hem vrijdagochtend al beschikbaar in Brabant. Over het andere is nog geen aankomsttijd afgesproken, maar dat wordt ook vrijdag verwacht.

Elders in Europa kampen landen ook met droogte en dus moeten zij afstemmen in hoeverre ze elkaar kunnen helpen. "Landen worden gevraagd of ze bijstand kunnen leveren en zullen dus ook beoordelen of ze hun potentieel kunnen afstaan, gelet op de situatie in hun eigen land", aldus Slofstra.

NEW YORK (ANP) - Een mogelijk zelfmoordbriefje van zedendelinquent Jeffrey Epstein ligt al bijna zeven jaar in een rechtbank in New York, buiten het zicht van onderzoekers. Dat schrijft de krant The New York Times, die de rechter heeft gevraagd het document vrij te geven.

Een celgenoot van Epstein zou het briefje hebben gevonden in juli 2019, nadat de rijke zedendelinquent bewusteloos was aangetroffen. Hij had toen schijnbaar al een zelfmoordpoging gedaan. Die overleefde hij, maar weken later werd hij alsnog dood gevonden. Uit onderzoek kwam naar voren dat hij zelfmoord pleegde, maar er ontstonden ook complottheorieën. Epstein was opgepakt voor grootschalig misbruik van minderjarige meisjes en kende veel invloedrijke mensen.

De celgenoot van Epstein heeft later verteld over het briefje, dat hij aan zijn eigen advocaten zou hebben gegeven. Hij wilde zich zo naar verluidt indekken tegen beschuldigingen dat hij Epstein had aangevallen. Het briefje belandde later in een gesloten dossier in een rechtbank.
