It’s not that millennials will never own homes, it’s just that they may never be able to own them where they want to. Case in point: The town you grew up in and fought so hard to escape is the only place with homes in your price range.

Just heartbreaking.

Although you worked so hard to get good grades in high school, saved money by attending community college for two years before transferring to a state university, and landed a solid job in your dream city, ultimately, after 15 years out of your parents’ house, the only homes in your price range are back in the podunk town where you were raised.

And sure, there are other affordable homes in other equivalent podunk towns, but it’s pretty depressing that your hard work has merely led you back to a place with nothing but a 7-11, two dive bars, and an opioid crisis. If only you’d known that to really make something for yourself, your one option was to go into finance. But would business school even be worth it now? What with AI…? And everything?

Oh, who knows? (Certainly not you.)

There’s a pretty nice-looking place on Zillow up for sale, not too far down the street from your parents. Three bedrooms, a little yard, a laundry machine. Yes, buying it would mean you failed, but something about it remains compelling. Most tragically, you could’ve saved about half the cost if you’d just bought it during the pandemic when your mom first sent you the link.

Damn. If only you’d known to give up by then.

Even geen enthousiaste kinderen op een schoolplein, maar een loslopende hond die met een egel speelt. Een ongebruikelijk tafereel in de nacht van maandag op dinsdag aan de Spaanseweg in Rotterdam. De politie heeft de hond meegenomen naar het politiebureau, de egel heeft het niet overleefd.

The prime minister said the attack in Golders Green is ‘part of a pattern of rising antisemitism’ in the country

Good morning. Keir Starmer has declared antisemitism “a crisis for all of us”. This morning he is hosting an event in Downing Street intended to get leaders across all areas of public life to address the problem and, according to the briefing from No 10, he will say:

Last week’s terrorist attack in Golders Green was utterly appalling. But it was not an isolated incident. It is part of a pattern of rising antisemitism that has left our Jewish communities feeling frightened, angry, and asking whether this country, their home, is safe for them.

These disgusting attacks are being made against British Jews. But, make no mistake, this crisis – it is a crisis for all of us. It is a test of our values. Values that are not guaranteed, but are earned. Every single day, through our actions.

Jewish communities across England will receive a further £1m of government funding to tackle antisemitism and strengthen community cohesion in those places facing the greatest risk.

An immediate £500,000 will also be allocated to Barnet council, reflecting recent serious antisemitic incidents in the borough and the large number of Jewish residents there.

​Geweld veroordelen zónder eerst begrip te tonen voor de zorgen van mensen. Het lijkt volstrekt ondenkbaar, maar het IJsselsteinse gemeenteraadslid Tristan van Dongen heeft het toch gedaan.

“Schandalig, misselijkmakend en op geen enkele manier goed te praten”, zei Van Dongen over de rellen in zijn woonplaats. “Explosieven afschieten op politiemensen, het stadhuis en een theater vernielen. En dat allemaal omdat je mensen die op zoek zijn naar een beter leven geen dak boven het hoofd gunt. Wat een onvoorstelbaar tuig.”

"Ik schrik hiervan", zegt premier Rob Jetten. "Prima dat je het geweld onacceptabel noemt, maar benoem dan éérst dat je de zorgen van mensen over migratie begrijpt. Op deze manier lijkt het alsof je het geweld onvoorwaardelijk veroordeelt. Dat kan niet de bedoeling zijn."

“Als je een statement tegen anti-azc-geweld wilt maken, moet je beginnen met het goedpraten van xenofobie”, vindt ook de IJsselsteinse burgemeester Ester Weststeijn-Vermaat. “Mensen zijn bezorgd over een probleem dat veel groter gemaakt wordt dan het is. Dat moet je serieus nemen. Geweld is nooit de oplossing, maar ik begrijp dat mensen zich zorgen maken. Ik snap hun zorgen. Hun zorgen begrijp ik. Heb je dat genoteerd?”

PVV-leider Geert Wilders haalt hard uit naar Van Dongen: “Dit nepraadslid heeft geen idee wat er leeft onder Nederlanders. Wij roepen demonstranten op om in IJsselstein nog harder te demonstreren tegen asielzoekerscentra. Het was allemaal nog veel te soft. Hoe bedoelt u, ‘opruiend’? De PVV is tegen iedere vorm van geweld, dat zeg ik keer op keer.”

Tristan van Dongen en zijn familie zijn inmiddels ondergedoken.
