The impact was visceral. For days last spring I watched an army of confederates, with their uniforms of fiery gold bands and anthracite hoops, advancing up the road. After a series of deaths on the beaches of Brittany, one bereaved family set out to prove the foul-smelling bloom was to blame

When her phone rang at around 5pm on 8 September 2016, Rosy Auffray was still at work. It was one of her daughters, distressed, calling to tell her that their father, Jean-René, had not come back from his daily run. Only the family dog had returned, alone and exhausted. Rosy rushed back home.

When she arrived, Rosy noticed that the dog was behaving bizarrely: she refused to walk, then collapsed under a bush. Her fur stank of rotten eggs, of overflowing sewers. In 2025 had slechts 25 procent van de vijftienplussers ‘heel veel’ of ’tamelijk veel’ vertrouwen in de Tweede Kamer, zo blijkt uit nieuw CBS-onderzoek. Opvallend is dat het vertrouwen in de EU, gemeenteraad en ambtenaren de afgelopen jaren wel is gestegen.

Duurder vliegen blijkt geen garantie voor betrouwbaarheid of service: in een nieuwe Europese ranglijst bungelt een klassieke premiummaatschappij zelfs naast prijsvechters als Ryanair en Vueling onderaan. Het consumentenportaal LightRight vergeleek miljoenen vluchtgegevens en klantbeoordelingen en kijkt onder meer naar vertragingen, annuleringen, compensatiebetalingen en algemene klanttevredenheid.

Opvallend is dat Innair, een traditionele full-service maatschappij, het slechtst van allemaal scoort, met slechts 2 van de 5 sterren voor de totale prestatie en een bijzonder zwakke score op betrouwbaarheid. Alleen Vueling en Ryanair doen het nog slechter als het gaat om het uitbetalen van compensaties; alle drie blijven steken op 2 sterren voor hun betaalgedrag richting gedupeerde reizigers. Daarmee schuift het vertrouwde beeld van ‘duur is beter’ volgens de onderzoekers definitief aan de kant.

“Het is niet langer correct om te zeggen dat lowcostmaatschappijen per definitie slechter presteren dan premiummaatschappijen”, zegt LightRight-expert Eyza Furkan. “ Kwaliteit staat dus niet automatisch in verband met de ticketprijs.” Voor Europese reizigers wordt de keuze daarmee minder een statussymbool, en meer een test in wie de claims over service en betrouwbaarheid écht waarmaakt.

ROTTERDAM (ANP) - De haven van Rotterdam moet fossiele activiteiten zo snel mogelijk afbouwen en klimaatneutraal zijn in 2050. Die eisen heeft de juridische non-profitorganisatie Advocates for the Future (AftF) neergelegd bij het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam. Het is de eerste officiële stap in een klimaatzaak rond de grootste haven van Europa.

"De Rotterdamse haven is een van de grootste fossiele energie- en industriehubs van Europa. Via de haven worden enorme hoeveelheden olie, kolen en gas ingevoerd, verwerkt en doorgevoerd", schetsen de eisers het belang. "De uitstoot van broeikasgassen die samenhangt met deze activiteiten is zeer groot."

Volgens AftF heeft het havenbedrijf, dat in handen is van de gemeente Rotterdam en de Nederlandse staat, een "zwaarwegende verantwoordelijkheid" om te verduurzamen, maar maakt het die niet waar.

Indirecte uitstoot

"Zo maakt het havenbedrijf afspraken met klanten over de directe uitstoot in de haven, maar wil het geen afspraken maken over de indirecte uitstoot, terwijl juist daar de grote klimaatopgave ligt", legt de organisatie uit. Het gaat dan bijvoorbeeld om de CO2-uitstoot bij het uiteindelijke gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen die in Rotterdam worden geïmporteerd en geraffineerd.

AftF-directeur Maikel van Wissen zegt dat het havenbedrijf als overheidsbedrijf publieke belangen moet dienen. "Daar hoort bij dat het huidige en toekomstige generaties beschermt tegen gevaarlijke klimaatverandering. Wie vandaag blijft kiezen voor fossiele afhankelijkheid, legt de rekening bij jongeren neer", stelt hij. AftF geeft het havenbedrijf een halfjaar om een goed plan op te stellen. Als dat niet gebeurt, stapt de organisatie naar de rechter.

Eerdere klimaatzaken

Voor hun onderbouwing maken de juristen onder meer gebruik van uitspraken in eerdere klimaatzaken. Zo wijzen ze op de zaken van Urgenda en Greenpeace tegen de overheid, de zaak van Milieudefensie tegen Shell en de adviserende uitspraak van het Internationaal Gerechtshof, dat vorig jaar oordeelde dat landen verplicht zijn het klimaat te beschermen.

Volgens de eisers is hun zaak bijzonder, omdat die zich niet richt op "één fabriek, één pijpleiding of één vergunning, maar op een publieke systeemspeler". Ze vatten het punt dat ze willen maken samen in een vraag: "Mag een overheidsdeelneming blijven sturen op de voortzetting van fossiele activiteiten, terwijl duidelijk is dat die activiteiten bijdragen aan gevaarlijke klimaatverandering en ernstige risico's opleveren voor huidige generaties, jongeren en toekomstige generaties?"
