"In the rest of this paper, we briefly situate AI in the historic context of the Long Industrial Revolution. Next, we explore the relationship between social technologies and coarse-grainings or abstractions, emphasizing their lossiness and consequences for power relations between different social groups. That allows us both to describe the apparent strengths and limits of actually-existing AI and start applying Simon's ideas to the intersection between AI and bureaucracy. Bureaucracy is a crucial, ancient social technology which played a central role in Simon's work. Its relationship to AI is urgently topical: claims about AGI were seemingly one influence on the Trump administration's sweeping cutbacks to the administrative state. We contrast these ideas with our own, to draw out the many important questions and problems that are elided or ignored by AGI-fueled speculation. Rather than expecting AGI to resolve perennial problems of human social organization, we should treat AI as a new social technology which will alleviate some problems, exacerbate others, and create new ones, just as other social technologies have done in the past. That, in turn, suggests the urgency of cooperation between social and computer scientists to figure out its social consequences, and broader social and political coordination too, of the kind that happened in previous stages of the Long Industrial Revolution."

GENÈVE (ANP) - Overheden en andere beleidsmakers in Europa moeten meer doen om de impact van klimaatverandering op de gezondheid te beperken. Een onafhankelijke commissie die vorig jaar in het leven is geroepen door de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) presenteert zondag verschillende aanbevelingen om de politiek en de internationale gemeenschap tot actie aan te zetten.
Zo zou de WHO klimaatverandering formeel moeten erkennen als bedreiging voor de volksgezondheid, zodat meer gecoördineerde actie mogelijk is.
Ook moet het gezondheidszorgsysteem anders, vindt de commissie, waarvan ook oud-minister Ernst Kuipers (Volksgezondheid) lid is. De zorgsector is naar schatting verantwoordelijk voor 4 tot 5 procent van de totale uitstoot van broeikasgassen, zoals via de inkoop van bijvoorbeeld wegwerpartikelen. Daar moet meer aandacht voor zijn.
Infectieziektes
"Klimaat en gezondheid zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden als twee kanten van dezelfde medaille", zei Kuipers zondagmiddag bij de presentatie van het rapport in Genève. "Vandaag de dag ondervinden inwoners ernstige lichamelijke en geestelijke gevolgen van klimaatverandering. Onze gezondheidszorgsystemen moeten zich voorbereiden op grote verdere verstoringen, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd ook hun eigen uitstoot moeten verminderen. De aanzienlijke ecologische voetafdruk van de zorg voor patiënten vandaag draagt bij aan de ziekte van morgen."
Volgens de commissie zien veel Europese landen momenteel al in de praktijk welke impact klimaatverandering heeft op de volksgezondheid. Zo kwamen in 2024 ongeveer 63.000 mensen in Europa om het leven als gevolg van de hitte, schrijven de commissieleden. Ook neemt het risico op infectieziektes als dengue of knokkelkoorts toe in een opwarmend klimaat. Dat virus wordt verspreid door de tijgermug, die steeds vaker in noordelijke gebieden wordt gezien.
PUTTEN (ANP) - Bij een tankstation langs de A28 bij Putten in Gelderland heeft een confrontatie tussen tientallen voetbalsupporters plaatsgevonden. Daarbij is een auto in brand gestoken, meldt een woordvoerder van de politie Oost-Nederland.
Op X wordt gesuggereerd dat het zou gaan om een confrontatie tussen supporters van Ajax en Feyenoord. Dat kan de woordvoerder niet bevestigen. De politie is nog bezig met uitzoeken wat er precies is gebeurd.
Feyenoord is om 14.30 uur gestart met een uitwedstrijd tegen PEC Zwolle, en Ajax op hetzelfde moment met een wedstrijd in en tegen Heerenveen.
