Uit onderzoek van Amsterdam UMC blijkt dat amateurvoetballers na het koppen stoffen in hun bloed hebben die duiden op acute hersenschade. Bewegingswetenschapper Marloes Hoppen: „Door de optelsom van alle studies, vallen de puzzelstukjes steeds verder in elkaar”.

BRUSSEL (ANP) - Het vasthouden aan de handelsdeal tussen de EU en de VS is voor Nederland cruciaal, zei minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma (Handel) maandag in Brussel. De EU-lidstaten en het Europees Parlement onderhandelen dinsdag opnieuw over die deal die de Europese Commissie vorig jaar zomer met de Amerikanen sloot. Het Parlement en de lidstaten moeten nog definitief instemmen.

De tijd voor een akkoord binnen de EU dringt, want Trump heeft gedreigd met extra importheffingen op auto's als de handelsdeal niet voor 4 juli is uitgevoerd.

Voor Nederland staat er veel op het spel, zei Sjoerdsma maandag. "Niemand in Nederland wil heffingen, wil handelsbarrières en zeker onze bedrijven niet." Aan onzekerheid hebben bedrijven "een nog grotere hekel", zei hij.

Clausule over heffingen

"Dat maakt zaken doen in de Verenigde Staten heel erg lastig en dat maakt hun verdienmodel heel moeilijk. Dat betekent dat het aan onze kant vasthouden aan de deal echt cruciaal is", zei de minister.

Het Europees Parlement wil een clausule inbouwen dat als de VS met nieuwe heffingen komen, de deal van de baan is. Het parlement vertrouwt de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump niet.

Wederkerig vertrouwen

"De kern is dat vertrouwen wederkerig moet zijn", zei Sjoerdsma. "Een deal is een deal en dat betekent dat de Europese Unie zich aan onze kant van de deal moet houden. Omgekeerd mogen wij dan van onze Amerikaanse vrienden verwachten dat zij ook hetzelfde doen en niet met nieuwe maatregelen komen."

De Europese Commissie staat er net zo in. Een woordvoerder van de Commissie zei maandag er alle vertrouwen in te hebben dat de lidstaten en het parlement dinsdagavond tot een compromis komen.

Na The Rights Forum heeft ook de Turkse arbeidersvereniging HTIB aangekondigd aangifte te doen tegen Kamerlid Gidi Markuszower (Groep Markuszower) naar aanleiding van zijn uitlatingen over Palestijnse asielzoekers. Die zetten volgens de organisatie aan tot haat en geweld.

PVV-afsplitser Markuszower zei vorige week in een video van het linkse mediaplatform Left Laser dat Nederland Palestijnse asielzoekers "met geweld" bij de grens moet tegenhouden. "Misschien met nog meer geweld dan waar ze vandaan komen", aldus de radicaal-rechtse politicus.

Volgens HTIB zijn de uitlatingen van Markuszower moreel verwerpelijk en een parlementslid onwaardig. "Wie vanuit een publieke functie oproept tot vijanddenken en geweld legitimeert, tast de fundamenten van onze democratische samenleving aan", stelt de organisatie.

Markuszower reageerde eerder dat hij "uit de emotie" had gesproken. Naar eigen zeggen had hij bedoeld dat de marechaussee op bijvoorbeeld Schiphol "maximaal geweld" mag gebruiken als mensen illegaal binnenkomen.

NEW YORK (ANP/RTR) - Een deel van het bewijs aangevoerd tegen de van moord verdachte Luigi Mangione (28) is volgens een rechter in New York onwettig verkregen en niet toelaatbaar in het proces. Dat moet 8 september beginnen. Mangione wordt ervan beschuldigd eind 2024 in New York de baas van de zorgverzekeringsonderneming UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, te hebben vermoord.

Het gaat om materiaal in een rugzak die Mangione bij zich had tijdens zijn arrestatie in Pennsylvania, vijf dagen na de daad. Daarbij zou de politie de rugzak zonder rechterlijk bevel daartoe hebben doorzocht en hebben nagelaten Mangione op zijn rechten als verdachte te wijzen.

Mangione ontkent alle beschuldigingen. In de publieke opinie geniet hij enige steun, omdat er in de VS veel antipathie heerst tegenover zorgverzekeringsbedrijven. Die zouden met hun praktijken verzekerden benadelen en de prijzen kunstmatig opdrijven.

De vervolging van Mangione kent meerdere problemen voor justitie, om procedurele redenen.

UTRECHT (ANP) - Schoonmakers krijgen vanaf volgend jaar de maximale fiscale reiskosten voor woon-werkverkeer vergoed. CNV meldt dat dit is afgesproken in de nieuwe cao, die volgens de vakbond voor 120.000 schoonmakers in Nederland geldt.

De nieuwe reiskostenregeling gaat vanaf 1 januari 2027 in. CNV-onderhandelaar Jan Kampherbeek vindt het "een forse verbetering" en stelt dat de reiskosten voor veel schoonmakers "een groeiend probleem" zijn. "Een steeds groter deel van het salaris gaat hieraan op. Ze leggen nu geld bij om op het werk te komen."

Vakbondsleden moeten nog wel stemmen over de nieuwe cao, die van 1 juli 2026 tot 1 juli 2028 moet lopen. Daarin is ook overeengekomen dat de lonen vanaf 1 januari 2027 omhooggaan met 3,1 procent en een jaar later met nog eens 3 procent.

Het kabinet kwam vorige maand met maatregelen vanwege de gestegen brandstofprijzen door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten, waaronder het verhogen van de maximale onbelaste reiskostenvergoeding van 23 cent naar 25 cent per kilometer.

UTRECHT (ANP) - Aanvoerder Nika Daalderop van de Nederlandse volleybalsters mist naar verwachting een groot deel van het zomerprogramma van Oranje. De 27-jarige Amsterdamse kampt met een hamstringblessure. Daalderop ontbreekt deze week tijdens de wedstrijden in de Four Nations Cup in Apeldoorn en in juni bij de start van de Volleyball Nations League.

"Dat is een tegenvaller", zei Daalderop via de bond. "Ik had me verheugd op de zomer met het Nederlands team, maar moet nu geduld opbrengen. De revalidatie is al begonnen, maar het is op dit moment nog niet te zeggen hoe lang die gaat duren. Ik zal vanaf de zijlijn de ploeg blijven ondersteunen."

Second, it’s a limbering-up round for the coming Labour leadership challenge. Third, and most importantly, Makerfield is a test of what Labour would have to look like to beat Reform when it matters. So what could be more helpful than for everyone involved – every cabinet minister, every backbencher, every commentator – to reach back into their memory and find the stupidest thing that was ever said about Brexit, and say it again in a more excitable voice. Get ready for Brexit-argument bingo; if you think you’ve heard them all before, that’s why it’s so fun.

Keir Starmer jumped first, even before the byelection was on the cards. After announcing a plan to nationalise steel – an industry that is already under government control – he made some huge admissions about Brexit, followed by some even larger promises. He said it had made us poorer, it had sent migration through the roof and it had made us less secure. It wasn’t what you’d call hold-the-front-page, since it’s common knowledge that Brexit has made us poorer; but it’s extremely surprising, of course, to hear the prime minister make a straightforward statement on the EU which relates to reality, rather than a convoluted set of red lines, related to an alternative universe in which Europe is begging to take us back, but we’re holding firm.

Netherlands police’s scheme to unmask and shame scammers into submission is proving highly successful, with 74 of its 100 most wanted now known to investigators. The country's “Game Over?!” campaign involved releasing the blurred images of fraudsters into the public domain and threatening to unmask them within two weeks if they did not turn themselves in. True to its word, after two weeks, the Dutch police unblurred the alleged offenders’ faces via social media and advertising boards across the country, including at gas stations, shopping centers, and train stations. The result? Thirty-four handed themselves in, and revealing the remaining faces led to the identification of a further 40 individuals. The police said it received more than 500 tips from the public after it unblurred the faces. Its website was viewed more than two million times, and its campaign images were seen nearly 90 million times on social media. Of the 74 now known to the police, more than half (38) have been questioned, and the interrogations for the rest are already scheduled. Police have arrested six individuals so far, although they stated that this doesn’t necessarily mean the arrests were directly for their alleged crimes. Arrests may take place when someone fails to appear for police questioning, for example, or if a suspect is linked to multiple offenses. Anne Jan Oosterheert, portfolio holder for online crime at the Dutch Politie, said: “This form of crime claims many victims. It has a huge impact on both the victims and society. The goal of Game Over?! is therefore to identify and prosecute the suspects. “With the identification of 74 suspects, this goal has been amply achieved, and so far, we can speak of a successful investigative offensive. We are very satisfied and grateful for all the help we have received from citizens.” An unusual take on appealing to the public for support, Game Over?! aimed to give the alleged offenders the chance to retain their anonymity in exchange for helping the police, and potentially assisting their own prosecution. The idea behind naming the campaign “Game Over?!” came from the term “F-Game,” or fraud game, which is what police say offenders often refer to when discussing their actions. The police’s initial announcement explicitly called the campaign a public attack on criminals, saying that it was also relying on public shaming to eventually apprehend the alleged offenders. The same message also came with a warning that young people were increasingly being recruited to these schemes, often paid very little for the privilege. Of the 74 now identified, the police said today that the youngest suspect was aged just 14, with the oldest being 42. The average age across them all was 22. Game Over?! explicitly targeted banking helpdesk impersonators, fake police officers, and card collectors, with officials saying they had become a “nasty” social problem. “These nasty forms of fraud have now become a social problem that can also be solved in collaboration with society," said Oosterheert previously as part of the campaign’s launch announcement. Of the crime types police strategists are looking to stamp out, cases involving bank helpdesk fraud are the most common, and typically target the elderly. The classic script goes: scammer calls the victim pretending to be a representative of their bank; throughout the course of the phone call, the scammer convinces the victim to surrender enough of their details so they can go away and access their account; the scammer then steals their money. Fake police officer scams are another, more recent scourge on the country, that in some cases have become violent and even deadly. They typically also target the elderly and see criminals knocking on doors, offering to safeguard valuables on the residents’ behalf. Police say that tens of thousands of elderly victims have fallen victim to scams like these, resulting in police fielding calls from victims and their “frightening stories.” “The impact on these often vulnerable victims is enormous,” the police said. “Their sense of security is often completely gone, as is their trust in the government and their fellow human beings.” ®
