The announcement comes more than four years after Rooney, citing the global boycott movement against Israel, turned down a translation offer by a different Israeli publisher for an earlier book.

New electoral maps are erasing Black representations. The effort takes its cues from American history

Early this month, a single pen stroke effectively ended representative Steve Cohen’s career in Congress. The man who has represented Memphis for 19 years will turn 77 later this month, but he wasn’t planning on retiring. He hadn’t lost any primary. The reason was that his district had been erased around him.

A new electoral map, passed by the Republican-led state legislature and signed by Bill Lee, the governor, divides the ninth district three ways. “Last week Tennessee Republicans silenced the Black vote here in Memphis to make Republican victories likely,” Cohen said in his statement. That’s succinct and accurate.

The Irish novelist Sally Rooney is releasing a Hebrew translation of her latest novel more than four years after she turned down a translation of an earlier novel, citing her support for the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

Rooney is publishing her bestselling 2024 novel, Intermezzo, through November Books, an independent Israeli publisher that supports Palestinian rights, with +972 Magazine and Local Call, two independent media outlets in Israel and Palestine.

Zo ontdekte onze Bassiehof dat veteraan Wilbert Linders die schuimbekkend los mocht gaan op Gidi Markuszower ("Met verbijstering en diepe walging heb ik geluisterd naar zijn pleidooi om vluchtelingen aan de grens tegen te houden, ‘desnoods met maximaal geweld’. Dit zijn niet de woorden van een verantwoordelijk volksvertegenwoordiger. Dit zijn de giftige oprispingen van een rücksichtslose demagoog die de fundamenten van onze beschaving probeert te slopen voor een paar goedkope politieke punten. Als veteraan, als marechaussee en als sociaaldemocraat kots ik deze retoriek hartgrondig uit") naar eigen zeggen ook iemand 'met een vlekje' is. En niet zomaar een vlekje. Hij "probeerde een 79-jarige vrouw uit Veghel af te persen. Hij was er per toeval (door een verkeerd bezorgd bankafschrift) achter gekomen dat de vrouw veel geld had en stuurde haar dreigbrieven. Bij een van die brieven zat een kogel. Via de brieven kreeg de vrouw de opdracht om 25.000 euro in een plastic tas weg te leggen op een afgesproken plek. Een opmerkelijk detail: Linders wilde het bedrag graag in briefjes van duizend euro, maar die bestaan helemaal niet." Een en ander vormde overigens geen beletsel om in de gemeenteraad te belanden, maar goed het gaat dan ook om de gemeenteraad van Limburgse gemeente Helmond. Enniewee. Wie zonder zonde is, werpe de eerste steen.
