From the 1990s until her tragically early death in 2016, Caroline Aherne was a fixture of British primetime television. This new study of her work reminds us of the punk spirit behind it all. Aherne was the deceptively vicious chatshow host Mrs Merton. She was the voice of Gogglebox, an expression of love for the medium she adored. She was the creator and star of The Royle Family, one of the most profound, realistic and beautiful sitcoms ever written for the British screen. She was one of the greats.
David Scott’s first book, Mancunians, offered a portrait of his city through its notable people, one of whom was Aherne. In it, Scott argued that her home city had not done nearly enough to celebrate her, and this, his second book, is an attempt to redress the balance. She is, Scott writes, his biggest influence (he is a poet and presenter) and his favourite Mancunian of all time. When the idea of writing a proper biography was put to him, he declined, repelled by the idea of “raking over someone’s private life”. This rakes over the work instead, representing a comprehensive record of her output from the perspective of a true devotee.

In an ever more threadbare release schedule, there’s little in the way of a backup plan for any youngsters and parents shut out of The Mandalorian and Grogu. The major studios’ animation departments have already delivered the blockbusting likes of Hoppers, Goat and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to multiplexes this spring, setting distributors scrabbling around to dig up filler material for kids’ matinee shows. If a new, Chinese-produced Tom and Jerry caper doesn’t spark undue enthusiasm, the most immediate family alternative would be this very ordinary Canadian digimation, featuring the voice of Owen Wilson as a dog with superpowers.
Co-writer and director Shea Wageman earns some points for weirdness. The titular pooch is one of a menagerie of household pets beamed up one night for alien experimentation. (This PG-rated entertainment comes perilously close to busting out the probes.) Returned home with the ability to fly and speak in a recognisably Wilsonian drawl, Charlie resolves to use his superpowers for good – becoming, if you will, Bark Kent. This indulges in more of the movies’ virulent anti-cat propaganda: neighbour’s puss Puddy (Ruairi MacDonald) breaks bad, pledging to punish his now-cowering owner, and indeed humanity entire, for failing to empty his litter tray.

Every month a few dozen staff from some of São Paulo’s leading hospitals take time out of their busy schedules to visit food fairs where stallholders from more than 50 local farms display their produce. The aim is to strike deals that will supply the hospitals with organic vegetables, homemade bread and other locally made foods.
Started in October 2023, the fairs are part of a revolutionary scheme in São Paulo state to phase out ultra-processed foods (UPFs) from hospital menus in favour of healthier alternatives. “It’s not only cooks, nutritionists, meal planners and hospital management who attend the fairs but also nurses and doctors,” says Weruska Davi Barrios, a specialist in hospital nutrition at the University of São Paulo, the institution that has initiated the project.

MALÉ (ANP/AFP/RTR) - Op de Malediven zijn de twee laatste lichamen van de vijf omgekomen Italiaanse duikers geborgen. De Italianen stierven vorige week donderdag tijdens een duiktocht naar onderwatergrotten.
Vier van hen deden onderzoek voor de Universiteit van Genua, de vijfde persoon was duikinstructeur. De lichamen werden gevonden op zo'n 60 meter diepte. De overleden duikinstructeur werd als eerste gevonden, op de dag van het duikincident. Een Maledivische duiker overleed in de zoektocht naar de andere Italianen.
De autoriteiten op de Malediven onderzoeken wat er met de Italiaanse duikers is gebeurd. Daarbij wordt onder meer gekeken of ze dieper doken dan mag. Het land staat toeristen niet toe dieper te duiken dan 30 meter. De Maledivische autoriteiten hebben de exploitatievergunning van de boot die de Italianen voor hun duiktocht gebruikten voorlopig opgeschort.
KYIV (ANP) - Vrouwen in Oekraïne kunnen weer vrijelijk de grens oversteken. Dat melden RBC Ukraine en Ukrinform op gezag van de grenswacht in het land. Eerder golden nog restricties voor vrouwen in bepaalde posities, zoals sommige overheidsmedewerkers, parlementariërs, hoogwaardigheidsbekleders en rechters. De opheffing volgt op een vrijdag aangekondigd kabinetsbesluit.
Voor Oekraïense mannen in het land in oorlog gelden nog wel restricties, vanwege de actieve dienstplicht in Oekraïne. Zo kunnen mannen in de leeftijd van 18 tot 60 jaar niet zonder meer het land verlaten. Wel worden uitzonderingen gemaakt voor medische redenen, of bijvoorbeeld voor alleenstaande vaders met jonge kinderen. Voor vrouwen geldt die mobilisatieplicht niet.
President Volodymyr Zelensky heeft meermaals Oekraïense mannen in het buitenland opgeroepen terug te keren naar Oekraïne om daar in het leger te dienen. Tijdens een bijeenkomst met bondskanselier Friedrich Merz in april noemde hij dat nog "niet meer dan fair".
SELLINGEN (ANP) - Het is nog niet bekend waar nieuwe asielzoekers de nacht kunnen doorbrengen als er in de nacht van woensdag op donderdag geen plek voor ze is in de opvang in Ter Apel. Daar is nog geen besluit over genomen, meldt de gemeente Westerwolde, waar Ter Apel in ligt.
In 2022 sliepen honderden nieuwe asielzoekers op het gras buiten de opvang in Ter Apel. Om herhaling te voorkomen, werden daarna sporthallen in omliggende gemeenten gebruikt om mensen de nacht te laten doorbrengen.
Opvangorgaan COA maakte woensdag bekend dat niet iedereen automatisch plek krijgt in de opvang bij het aanmeldcentrum. Binnen is het te druk. Kwetsbare asielzoekers krijgen daarom voorrang. Westerwolde overlegt woensdagochtend over de situatie.
Fans of Taco Bell, don’t get your hopes up, because their new menu item seems like a failure right out the gate: Taco Bell has released a tostada only women can taste, only dogs can see, only kids can smell, and only men can buy.
Well, that sounds rather limiting.
Taco Bell’s new “Avocado Tostada” may seem like a standard item anyone can buy, smell, see, and taste, but sadly, this couldn’t be further from the truth. By limiting the product so that only men can buy it, only kids can smell it, only dogs can see it, and only women can taste it, this tostada seems designed for heterosexual couples with one kid and a dog, and pretty much no one else.
Seems pretty confusing, right?
Taco Bell’s commercial promoting the product doesn’t really help the situation either. In it, a man orders the tostada. His dog starts barking, alerting him and his son to the tostada’s location on the counter. His son sniffs around, and with the dog’s helpful barks, he picks it up and carries it to his mom. With a little more help from the dog, the woman proceeds to eat the tostada. The son then remarks that he wishes he could taste it, the man remarks he wishes he could smell it, and the woman remarks that she wishes she could buy it.
Yikes. It’s not every day you see a company biff a new campaign this hard, especially considering that women who’ve eaten the tostada report that its bland flavor does not justify the effort required to order it.
Damn. It’s definitely pretty bizarre that Taco Bell signed off on this, but if you’re a guy who knows a dog, child, and woman who can work together to eat it, it looks like you’ve still got time to check it out.
