If word-processors had been in use 400 years ago, you can be sure they would not have functioned like this.

Keir Starmer has struck a trade deal with six Gulf states in what he described as a “huge win” for British business, ending four years of talks led by four different prime ministers.
The deal will offer £3.7bn worth of opportunities for exporters – double the original estimates – particularly in the food and luxury car sectors but also defence, aerospace, hospitality and other services, the government said.

An Eritrean asylum seeker who was due to be forcibly removed to France today under the “one in, one out” scheme has had his ticket cancelled after making a serious attempt on his life, the Guardian understands.
Other detainees said they believed he had made an attempt on his life because he feared he would be in danger in France due to his specific circumstances had he been forcibly returned there. He was discovered yesterday by his cellmate, who raised the alarm. He is now on round-the-clock suicide watch in detention.

Continue reading...AMSTERDAM (ANP) - De AEX-index op de aandelenbeurs in Amsterdam is woensdag met een flinke plus gesloten, waarbij een nieuw slotrecord werd bereikt. De chipfondsen ASMI, Besi en ASML stonden bij de sterkste stijgers in de hoofdgraadmeter. De olieprijzen gingen juist flink omlaag.
ASMI en Besi stegen tot 4 procent en ASML werd 6,7 procent duurder. De Zwitserse bank UBS kwam met een positief analistenrapport over ASML, waarin werd gezegd dat de koers van de chipmachinefabrikant de komende twaalf maanden met nog eens 50 procent kan stijgen door de grote vraag naar chips voor kunstmatige intelligentie. Dit jaar is ASML al ongeveer 40 procent meer waard geworden door het optimisme onder beleggers over AI.
De AEX eindigde 1,5 procent hoger op 1033,73 punten. De MidKap won 1,3 procent tot 1047,04 punten. Op de beurzen in Frankfurt en Parijs werden winsten tot 1,7 procent geboekt. De FTSE 100 in Londen steeg 1 procent.
Ook staalproducent ArcelorMittal deed het goed bij de hoofdfondsen op het Damrak met een koersstijging van 5 procent. Grootste dalers in de AEX waren muziekbedrijf Universal Music Group (UMG) en informatieleverancier Wolters Kluwer met minnen tot 3,8 procent.
Shell zakte 0,9 procent door de daling van de olieprijzen na berichten over de doorvaart van schepen, waaronder olietankers, door de Straat van Hormuz. Daarnaast zei president Donald Trump dat de Verenigde Staten in de laatste fase van de vredesgesprekken met Iran zijn. Een vat Amerikaanse olie kostte 4,8 procent minder op 99,13 dollar per vat en Brentolie werd meer dan 5 procent goedkoper op 105,57 dollar per vat.
In de MidKap nam luchtvaartcombinatie Air France-KLM de leiding met een plus van 3,2 procent, geholpen door de lagere olieprijzen. Luchtvaartmaatschappijen zijn erg gevoelig voor stijgende brandstofkosten. In Londen klom British Airways-moederbedrijf IAG 4,6 procent en het Duitse Lufthansa werd 3,3 procent hoger gezet in Frankfurt. Budgetmaatschappij easyJet won 2,2 procent en Ryanair ging 5,3 procent omhoog.
In Parijs werd computerspellenontwikkelaar Ubisoft Entertainment 6,6 procent lager gezet na tegenvallende prognoses.
