Jarenlang gold het als een van de minder charmante bijwerkingen van judo en andere vechtsporten: het beruchte bloemkooloor. Worstelaars, MMA-vechters en judoka’s lopen het op door eindeloze klappen en druk op de oren, waardoor het kraakbeen permanent vervormt. Niet bepaald iets waar mensen vrijwillig voor in de rij gingen staan. Tot nu.

In Rusland blijkt namelijk een opvallende trend op te duiken: mannen betalen geld om zichzelf expres een bloemkooloor aan te meten, puur om eruit te zien als doorgewinterde MMA-vechters. Volgens het Russische Telegramkanaal Baza groeit de populariteit van de ingreep razendsnel.

Absurde trend

De behandeling is even simpel als absurd. Het oor wordt langdurig samengedrukt zodat dezelfde schade ontstaat als bij echte vechtsporters. Het resultaat is een opgezwollen, vervormd oor dat moet uitstralen dat de drager niet bang is voor een gevecht.

Het prijskaartje van deze bizarre lichaamsmodificatie valt voor westerse standaarden wel mee. Een behandelaar zegt inmiddels een wachtlijst van een maand te hebben. De bizarre ingreep kost omgerekend zo’n 80 dollar per oor. Wie een extra ruig effect wil, moet meerdere sessies ondergaan.

Klanten zeggen dat ze intimiderend over willen komen op andere mannen. Vooral in het zuiden van Rusland is de ingreep populair, al stijgt de vraag ook in andere delen van het land.

Hersteloperaties

Artsen slaan ondertussen alarm. Een ontstoken bloeduitstorting in het oor kan leiden tot ernstige infecties waarbij kraakbeen zwaar wordt aangetast. Hersteloperaties kosten in Moskou al snel meer dan duizend euro en vereisen soms ribkraakbeen of implantaten.

Psycholoog Ekaterina Trofimova is niet te spreken over de heren die eruit willen zien als brute krijgers. Volgens haar schuilt echte kracht juist niet achter overdreven stoer gedrag. “Echte kracht gaat vaak samen met rust en zelfvertrouwen,” zegt ze. “Mensen die echt getraind zijn in vechtsporten hoeven hun mannelijkheid meestal niet overdreven tentoon te stellen.”

En misschien nog pijnlijker voor de wannabe-vechters: kenners zien het verschil meteen. Een nep-bloemkooloor uit een Telegram-afspraakje blijkt toch iets anders dan een oor dat na jarenlang vechten op de mat is verdiend.

UTRECHT (ANP) - Amateurclubs proberen 23 juni via de rechter de nieuwe weekendcompetitie van de KNVB tegen te houden die na de zomer moet beginnen. In die opzet worden clubs die nu nog op zaterdag of zondag spelen bij elkaar gevoegd, waarna ze op beide dagen spelen.

De clubs hebben zich verenigd in de Kerngroep Weekendvoetbal en bespreken hun bezwaren al langer met de voetbalbond. Spelers kiezen bewust op welke weekenddag ze spelen, is onder meer de stelling. De groep voelt zich onvoldoende gehoord door de bond en stapte naar de rechter.

De uitspraak van de bodemprocedure die bij de rechtbank loopt, komt vermoedelijk in augustus of september, zegt kerngroepvoorzitter Stan Raben. "Maar de indeling van het nieuwe seizoen wordt begin juli vastgesteld. Daarom verzoeken we met dit kort geding de rechter om het besluit van de KNVB op te schorten."

Als dat lukt, kunnen de clubs de nieuwe competitie minimaal een jaar uitstellen. "Ik verwacht niet dat ze halverwege een nieuwe indeling maken", aldus Raben.

WIESBADEN (ANP/DPA) - Het Duitse handelsoverschot met de Verenigde Staten is in het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar afgenomen door de hogere handelstarieven die de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump heeft opgelegd. Van een handelsoverschot is sprake wanneer een land meer goederen en diensten verkoopt aan het buitenland dan dat het koopt.

Het handelsoverschot in het eerste kwartaal van 2026 bedroeg 12,4 miljard euro, meldde het Duitse statistiekbureau Destatis. Dat is een daling van 30,5 procent ten opzichte van dezelfde periode een jaar geleden.

Duitse fabrikanten leverden in de eerste drie maanden van dit jaar voor 36,2 miljard euro aan goederen aan de VS, een daling van 12,1 procent ten opzichte van vorig jaar. De import uit de VS steeg daarentegen met 1,9 procent tot 23,8 miljard euro. Duitsland, de grootste economie van Europa, heeft al meer dan dertig jaar jaarlijkse exportoverschotten in de handel met de VS.

The third film in Tarik Saleh’s ‘Cairo trilogy’ is a about a washed-up movie star who is bullied into starring in government propaganda

Swedish-Egyptian film-maker Tarik Saleh has long been a brilliant satirist of the corruption and shabby political compromises and conspiracies of post-Mubarak Egypt. Now he brings us the third of his “Cairo trilogy”, after The Nile Hilton Incident in 2017 and Cairo Conspiracy in 2022. This new film is a seductive black-comic political thriller set in Egypt of the present day, showing us that everyone in the glamorous world of the movies, infatuated as they are with made-up stories acted out by narcissists believing in their own publicity, can so easily be pressed into the service of political propaganda.

The result is a rackety, despairing, funny film with something of Billy Wilder, or István Szabó’s Mephisto, or Bertolucci’s fascism parable The Conformist. For me, it also had echoes of Daniel Kehlmann’s novel The Director, about 1930s Austrian movie director GW Pabst, fatally tempted by the blandishments of Goebbels. Saleh’s lead is his longtime leading man Fares Fares, playing an ageing Egyptian movie star; this is pampered matinee idol George Fahmy, a man comfortable doing cheesy crowd-pleasing potboilers, now bullied into playing the lead in a sinister government-sponsored biopic of the president (with news footage of the current president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, cheekily cut in).

While Canada may be clinging to fossil fuels, much of the world is moving on

Casual international observers would be forgiven for assuming Canada is in the comforting hands of a climate champ. After all, while climate policy rollbacks reign supreme in Donald Trump’s America, Canada is now led by a man who, while serving as governor of the Bank of England, delivered a celebrated 2015 speech, “Breaking the tragedy of the horizon”, warning the global investment community of the financial risks of climate change; who went on to serve as UN special envoy for climate action and finance; and whose 2022 book Value(s) had much to say about the “existential threat” of climate change. A man who recently dazzled the world with his Davos speech on how middle powers can stand up to global bullies.

Look, we get it. Next to the US president, Carney seems so debonair, thoughtful and calm – a lifeline of stability in a volatile new world.

Maths was never my thing. I quite enjoyed it at O-level, to the extent that I chose to do it at A-level. As early as the first week of the A-level course, however, it became abundantly clear that the subject was quite beyond me. I simply couldn’t make head or tail of what the teacher was on about.

Looking around at the rest of the class quietly getting on with it, I remember wondering if there had been some primer course over the summer that everyone but me had attended. I just didn’t get it. There didn’t seem to be any certainties any more, rarely anything so straightforward as a right or wrong answer. There were enough grey areas in my other subjects – English and history. From my maths I wanted certainty, objective truth, which as far as I could see wasn’t part of it any more.
