The use of psychological stratagems and pitchside or locker-room sabotage has long been employed by football managers trying to give their teams an edge over visiting rivals. Whether it’s placing the pegs too high or the seats too low, painting the walls an aggression-lowering shade of pink or deliberately moving the advertising hoardings to prevent long throws, there are apparently no stones conniving coaching staff will leave unturned if they think their team’s chances of winning may be improved by such shenanigans. Almost 40 years ago, Wimbledon’s Crazy Gang famously used to leave visitors to Plough Lane without any hot water, a plan that seemed stunning in its simplicity, until you realise – as Football Daily has just done after nearly 40 years – that footballers generally tend not to shower until after the game is over, rendering their attempt at disruption decidedly redundant.

You could argue that photosynthesis, soil bacteria, chlorophyll and germination, by their nature, never go out of style. But somehow, as the news broke this week that Monty Don would step down from Gardeners’ World after 23 years behind the shovel, gardening is having a moment in the sun.

On Saturday, New Balance will launch a pair of trainers alongside the jewellery designer Bleue Wickham-Burnham in a campaign fronted by Don himself, photographed shrinking into a bush with a pair of the trainers around his neck. In high fashion of late, the gardener Charlie McCormick became the face of JW Anderson’s spring 2027 campaign, and Alfie Nickerson, who grows flowers biodynamically in Norfolk for his brand Burnt Fen Flowers, has recently been plucked by Jimmy Choo for its autumn campaign, Wild Rose. Catwalks have been mossy, designs have been mycelial.

Fight offers revealing snapshot of boxers once facing uncertain futures after positive drug tests now vying for a welterweight world championship

Four years ago Conor Benn’s career was thrown into limbo after two positive drug tests scuppered his blockbuster fight with Chris Eubank Jr. Two years ago Ryan Garcia was serving a one-year suspension after testing positive for ostarine at the time of his greatest victory.

On Saturday night they will each be rewarded with an eight-figure payday when they meet at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for Garcia’s WBC welterweight championship. The purses have not been disclosed, although reports have put the combined pot at around $30m with each fighter expected to haul in roughly $15m (£11m).

FALSE “GLP-1 medications mimic Glucagon-like peptide-1 – one of the hormones involved in appetite regulation. It doesn’t completely suppress hunger, but it is powerful,” says Dr Federica Amati, nutrition lead at Imperial College School of Medicine and author of The Appetite Reset. “The medicine is about 1,000 times stronger than what we naturally produce from our gut,” she explains. As food passes through the gut, cells called L-cells sense the nutrients, which sparks the production of the GLP-1 hormone. Without the drugs, these bursts of GLP-1 production last a few minutes. “It’s a bit like a sparkler. In comparison, the drugs are like a bonfire that roars for a week,” says Amati. Because the GLP-1 hormone stays in your body for longer if you are on the drugs, you feel fuller faster and your appetite gets suppressed, but you will eventually get hungry.

De leesvaardigheid van vijftienjarigen daalt hard. Maar er zijn heus nog scholieren die graag lezen. Van fantasy en horror tot boeken over een modeblogger. „Ik vind het heerlijk, na een hele dag school met al die prikkels.”

De vouwbare iPhone is nog maar net gelanceerd of Apple kondigt alweer een nieuw model aan: de propbare iPhone 18. De propbare telefoon richt zich op een markt die door de vouwbare telefoon onbenut blijft, namelijk de markt van ‘de proppers’.

“Hoewel je zou denken dat het anders zit, blijkt uit een breed opgezet klantonderzoek dat toch lang niet iedereen een vouwer is. Dat was voor ons ook even wennen”, vertelt een van de hardware-engineers van Apple. “De telefoon is voorzien van allemaal leuke nieuwe snufjes. Het bevat twee 48-megapixelcamera’s waarmee je vlijmscherpe foto’s kunt maken, je kunt tot vier keer meer data opslaan én gemakkelijk je neus snuiten.”

Apple-topman John Ternus legt uit dat de propbare iPhone, die in het najaar van 2027 moet verdwijnen, niet op grote schaal geproduceerd zal worden. “De meeste proppers zitten bij Samsung.”

Een viraal TikTok-filmpje zet tien Nederlandse goede doelen op een rij met de salarissen van hun topman of -vrouw. Aardig geld, denk je, voor iemand die het van jouw twintig euro per maand moet hebben. Wat blijkt uit de jaarverslagen zelf?

De harde cijfers voor 2024 laten zien dat vrijwel alle directeuren binnen de eigen sectornorm blijven. Wat ze precies verdienen, verschilt fors.

De top vijf bij de grote goede doelen

Op basis van de openbare bezoldigingstabellen in de jaarverslagen 2024 zien de belangrijkste jaarinkomens er zo uit. Dit is het brutojaarinkomen (salaris, vakantiegeld, eindejaarsuitkering), zonder pensioenpremie en werkgeverslasten.

De duodirectie van Greenpeace Nederland verdient samen minder dan één directeur van het Rode Kruis. Marieke Vellekoop, sinds oktober 2024 medebestuurder bij Greenpeace, kwam op een bruto jaarinkomen van € 89.666.

Een directeur van een goed doel mag officieel meer verdienen dan de minister-president.

Wat betekent zo'n bedrag?

Goede doelen rapporteren twee cijfers. Het bruto jaarinkomen staat op de loonstrook. De totale bezoldiging telt de pensioenpremie en andere vergoedingen erbij op. Zo staat bij het Rode Kruis € 170.000 in de kop, terwijl de totale kosten € 201.000 zijn.

De grens ligt bij de zelf opgestelde regeling van Goede Doelen Nederland, met categorieën A tot en met J. Voor de zwaarste categorie geldt in 2024 een maximum jaarinkomen van € 188.000 en een maximale totale bezoldiging van € 233.000 – hetzelfde plafond als de Wet normering topinkomens voor de publieke sector.

En de rest?

Bij KWF Kankerbestrijding verdient bestuurder Dorine Manson in 2025 € 171.843 inclusief vakantiegeld. Oxfam Novib past standaard een korting van 4% op de sectornorm toe. De cijfers die op TikTok rondgaan voor Alzheimer Nederland, CliniClowns en KiKa zijn niet zonder meer uit de primaire bron te bevestigen; de exacte bedragen staan in hun eigen jaarverslag.

Wat je zelf kunt doen als donateur

• Zoek op de site van het doel het meest recente jaarverslag; de bezoldiging staat verplicht in de jaarrekening.
• Vergelijk het jaarinkomen met het maximum voor de categorie – dat staat er meestal expliciet naast.
• Kijk goed of het gaat om "jaarinkomen" of "totale bezoldiging"; anders vergelijk je appels met peren.
• Bij twijfel: raadpleeg het openbare register van het CBF.

Een hoog salaris zegt op zichzelf weinig over de kwaliteit van een goed doel. De jaarverslagen laten wel zien hoe strak – of hoe ruim – de sector zichzelf normeert. Daar begint transparantie.
