Vote for Republican nomination is latest test of President’s grip over GOP

Ken Paxton, the state attorney general, takes on four-term incumbent John Cornyn on Tuesday in the ugliest primary election of the year. The winner of the Republican Senate runoff in Texas will contest November’s general election against Democrat James Talarico.

Paxton and Cornyn have spent months coveting the most valuable endorsement in Republican politics: Donald Trump. Last week, scandal-plagued Paxton got it, with the US president describing him as “a true Maga warrior”.

Iran has poured cold water on suggestions that a deal with the US is imminent, pointing to the confusion in US positions and Israeli interference as reasons why an agreement is proving difficult to secure. Speaking at the weekly foreign ministry press briefing, Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran’s negotiating team, also said future management of the strait of Hormuz was a matter for Oman and Iran to agree on, and that it was not tolls that were being proposed but “fees for navigational services”.

By contrast, the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, said that a deal was still possible, adding that the strait of Hormuz would open “one way or another”. “There were some talks going on in Qatar today, so we’ll see if we can make progress. I think it’s a lot of talking back and forth going on about specific language in the initial document,” Rubio told reporters in Jaipur during an official visit to India.

A Trump Tower planned for the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, is to be built on land currently part-owned by the son of the US-sanctioned leader of the country, according to official records. The proposed skyscraper, a joint venture between a local consortium and the Trump Organization, which is managed by the US president’s sons, Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump, will be on a plot whose current registered owner is the International Charity Fund Cartu.

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said on Monday her government agreed to allow the Iranian national football team to stay in Mexico during the World Cup, adding that the United States did not want to host the team. Sheinbaum said football’s governing body Fifa approached her government after the US said it did not want Iran’s squad to stay in the country throughout the tournament, despite Iran playing all three of its group matches there.

Keir Starmer announces review after boys were given non-custodial sentences for rape of two girls

The court of appeal will review the non-custodial sentences given to three teenage boys for the rape of two girls, Keir Starmer has announced.

The boys, two of whom were 15 and one aged 14 at the time of sentencing, were given youth rehabilitation orders after the judge in the case said he wanted to “avoid criminalising these children unnecessarily” and support their reintegration into society.

BRUSSEL (ANP) - "Vandaag rouwt Europa mee met België", schrijft voorzitter Ursula von der Leyen op X naar aanleiding van het dodelijke ongeluk tussen een trein en een schoolbusje in het Vlaamse Buggenhout. Volgens de Belgische minister Jean-Luc Crucke (Mobiliteit) kwamen vier inzittenden van de schoolbus om door het ongeluk, onder wie twee tieners.

Von der Leyen schrijft "een gebroken hart" te hebben door het ongeluk. "Mijn oprechte deelneming gaat uit naar de families en nabestaanden van de slachtoffers."

De twee overleden volwassenen zijn de chauffeur en een begeleider van de kinderen. Meer details over de slachtoffers zijn nog niet bekendgemaakt, omdat de politie eerst hun families wil informeren.

Hoe het ongeluk exact heeft kunnen gebeuren is nog onduidelijk, maar er zouden beelden zijn waarop te zien is dat het busje op het spoor was terwijl de slagbomen al gesloten waren.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Corné H. staat bovenaan de wachtlijst voor plaatsing in de Van Mesdagkliniek, toch lijkt een snelle plaatsing uiterst onzeker. De 30-jarige gedetineerde, die werd veroordeeld voor een urenlange gijzeling in Ede in 2024, wacht al bijna 1,5 jaar op een plek in een tbs-kliniek.

Zijn advocaten eisen dinsdag in hoger beroep van de Staat directe plaatsing in een kliniek. Sinds H. in detentie is, zijn er meerdere incidenten geweest: op 5 december 2025 gijzelde hij medewerkers in de PI Vught, ook verwondde hij zichzelf meerdere malen.

Wat een snelle plaatsing ingewikkeld maakt, is volgens de advocaat van de Staat de strafzaak die momenteel loopt. H. wordt vervolgd voor de gijzeling in de gevangenis in Vught en de zaak wordt pas 20 juli behandeld. De Van Mesdagkliniek neemt in principe geen cliënten aan die onderwerp zijn van een strafrechtelijk onderzoek. Mocht H. in die zaak geen celstraf- of tbs-maatregel opgelegd krijgen, dan kan hij hoogstwaarschijnlijk worden geplaatst, maar dat kan nog maanden duren.

De politie IJsselmonde heeft drie tieners aangehouden in een woning aan de Peitkreek in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde. Dat gebeurde afgelopen zaterdag, nadat de politie op zoek was naar een vermist meisje. Ook had het drietal een nep vuurwapen bij.

She also curated a show at the Oakland Museum of California titled Fairyland @ 75: A Legacy of Magic, organized on behalf of Children’s Fairyland, where she is Director of Art and Restoration.
