Iceage have always seemed like a band in a state of constant development. You might say that’s understandable, given the Danish musicians were in their teens when their debut album New Brigade was released in 2011: if you don’t change between the age of 18 and your early 30s, you’re probably in trouble. But rock music isn’t real life, and a less adventurous band might have been minded to stick with a good thing, given the reception New Brigade was afforded. Twenty-four minutes of hardcore blended with noisy Birthday Party-esque post-punk and a sizeable pinch of gothic gloom, it was praised so vociferously that the praise itself provoked heated debate, as claims any one band are the “saviours” of an entire genre are wont to do, particularly when said genre is punk.

Iceage seemed entirely unbothered about any ensuing weight of expectation. If they didn’t exactly sound like a completely different band on 2014’s Plowing Into the Field of Love, they were still doing things you would never have imagined the authors of New Brigade doing: piano ballads, country-rock and, on Abundant Living, attempting to join the dots between Howlin’ Wolf’s Smokestack Lightning and the ramshackle sound of frontman Elias Rønnenfelt’s favourites the Pogues. In 2018, Beyondless offered Dexys-style horns, New Orleans jazz and a track that sounded like mid-80s U2 equipped with a string section. By 2021’s Seek Shelter, they had a gospel choir on board and mixed anthemic songs – imagine Oasis mired in angst, gloom and distortion – with tracks that interpolated the Carter Family’s Can the Circle Be Unbroken? or bore the influence of French chanson.

Europese regels zorgen dat anders niet-levensvatbare bedrijven geen subsidies, garanties of leningen krijgen. Dat voorkomt oneerlijke concurrentie met staatssteun, maar deze Onderneming in Moeilijkheden (OIM)-definitie pakt ook zéér nadelig uit voor de financiering van innovatieve startups en scale-ups. Groeibedrijven die juist wél kansrijk zijn, vallen er nu toch onder en lopen zo financiering mis. Op initiatief van minister Heleen Herbert (Economische Zaken en Klimaat) stellen Nederland en 7 andere EU-landen (Duitsland, Letland, Luxemburg, Polen, Slowakije, Spanje, Tsjechië) voor om de OIM-definitie daarom te wijzigen.

BRUSSEL (ANP) - Nederland krijgt de eerste doses van "een experimenteel, antiviraal middel" voor de behandeling van het hantavirus toegezonden. Dat maakte de Europese Commissie donderdag bekend. Er zijn nog geen goedgekeurde medicijnen of vaccins voor het behandelen of voorkomen van het virus, maar het Europees Geneesmiddelenbureau acht het middel Favipiravir geschikt voor gebruik in klinische proeven.

De Japanse autoriteiten hebben 1400 tabletten van het middel beschikbaar gesteld aan EU-lidstaten, aldus de Commissie. Die zijn gedoneerd door Fujifilm Pharmaceuticals, een Japans bedrijf. Naast Nederland krijgen ook Frankrijk en Spanje tabletten toegestuurd. De Commissie stelt dat de verzending op verzoek van de drie landen mogelijk is gemaakt.

De Commissie start "spoedaanbestedingsprocedures" om extra doses beschikbaar te stellen, voor het geval er de komende weken meer besmettingen van het hantavirus worden vastgesteld. Met de beschikbaarheid van extra doses wordt "de paraatheid van de EU versterkt".

Duitse treinen komen tegenwoordig zo vaak te laat door een combinatie van oude infrastructuur, jarenlange onderinvestering en een overbelast spoorsysteem. Daarbovenop kampt Deutsche Bahn met personeelstekorten, veel gelijktijdige bouwplaatsen en een logge organisatie, waardoor storingen en vertragingen zich snel opstapelen.

Infrastructuur en achterstallig onderhoud

Een groot deel van het Duitse spoor is verouderd: rails, wissels en seinen zijn op veel trajecten aan vervanging toe. Omdat noodzakelijke investeringen lang zijn uitgesteld, wordt nu op veel plaatsen tegelijk gewerkt, wat trajecten tijdelijk enkelsporig maakt en de kans op vertragingen vergroot.

Overvolle sporen en weinig buffers

Het netwerk draait dicht tegen de maximale capaciteit, met veel langeafstandstreinen, regionale treinen en goederenverkeer op dezelfde sporen. Daardoor kan één defect of kleine vertraging in een knooppunt meteen een kettingreactie veroorzaken, omdat er weinig ruimte is om treinen om te leiden of extra rijtijd in te bouwen.

Organisatie en personeelstekort

Deutsche Bahn wordt geplaagd door personeelstekorten bij machinisten, monteurs en verkeersleiding. Tegelijkertijd geldt het bedrijf als sterk bureaucratisch, waardoor beslissingen en verbeteringen traag worden doorgevoerd.

Gevolg voor de reiziger

Het resultaat is dat vertragingen en uitval vrijwel dagelijks voorkomen, vooral op langeafstandslijnen. De vroegere reputatie van Duitse stiptheid heeft daarmee plaatsgemaakt voor wantrouwen bij reizigers, die extra overstaptijd inplannen of het spoor mijden.

A long-serving Google engineer based in Zurich faces charges in the US for allegedly profiting from confidential company information by making Polymarket bets. According to court documents, between October and December 2025, Italian national Michele Spagnuolo, 36, made a series of bets using confidential data related to Google's annual Year in Search report. What started out with a few hundred dollars placed on Kendrick Lamar being named the most-searched individual in 2025 turned into $2.75 million worth of bets related to whether specific individuals would or would not be named the most-searched in Google's Year in Search. The criminal complaint filed regarding Spagnuolo's alleged offenses related to the following bets: $403 for Kendrick Lamar to be most-searched at 3 percent probability $10,807 on Pope Leo XIV not being the most-searched person $381.12 for D4vd to be among the top five most-searched individuals, with implied odds reflecting an 18 percent probability. This bet was made after allegedly re-accessing Year in Search data in November, which had changed since the last time he allegedly accessed it in October $5 for D4vd to be most-searched at a probability of only slightly higher than 0 percent $937,688 for Bianca Censori to not be the most-searched at 85 percent probability $509,149 for Donald Trump to not be the most-searched at 90 percent probability $171,612 for Donald Trump not to be among the top five most-searched at 66 percent probability After Google released its Year in Search for 2025 on December 4, Spagnuolo allegedly made approximately $1.2 million in profits from the bets made by the AlphaRaccoon account on Polymarket. Investigating the matter, Brandon Racz, special agent at the FBI who sought Spagnuolo's arrest warrant, stated that the AlphaRaccoon account, which was allegedly controlled by the Italian, appeared to empty the contents of its wallet into other exchanges. The FBI believes Spagnuolo was trying to launder the proceeds of his bets. After the contents of AlphaRaccoon's Polymarket wallet – 5.045 million USDC.e – were transferred out, blockchain data showed a series of subsequent transactions. These included at least two with a decentralized cryptocurrency swapping service and one with a cryptocurrency transfer service that markets itself as protecting privacy by removing wallet addresses from a blockchain. The criminal complaint [PDF] also notes that the FBI was scouring social media discussions about AlphaRaccoon's profits. Investigators highlighted conversations that occurred shortly after Year in Search was published in December, with users speculating that AlphaRaccoon was a Google insider. Following his arrest on May 27, Spagnuolo faces charges related to commodities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering, which together carry a combined maximum sentence of 50 years. "Today's charges reinforce a decades-old message: corporate insiders cannot use confidential business information to turn a profit in our markets," said US attorney Jay Clayton. "As alleged, Spagnuolo violated the duties he owed to his employer and used Google's confidential business information to make more than $1.2 million in trading profits on Polymarket. Insider trading compromises the integrity of our markets, and the American people want this greed-driven conduct investigated and prosecuted."
