Meta is reportedly backtracking on, or at least weakening, its plans to implement enhanced employee workplace monitoring following staff protests. According to the latest internal memo on the matter, first reported by Reuters, Meta is still planning to capture employees’ keystrokes as previously understood, but it will allow Metalings to switch off the monitoring for 30-minute periods, and request a total exemption. The memo was distributed to staff on Tuesday by Stephane Kasriel, veep at the company’s Superintelligence Labs AI division. Kasriel said that, in addition to allowing staff to take half-hour privacy breaks, when the software is hoovering up their data, it will at least do it in a less resource-demanding manner. Some staffers were complaining about the battery drain on their devices incurred by the initiative, while remote workers reported undue strain on their home internet usage. The Register contacted Meta for a response but it did not reply, as was the case when we previously asked it to comment on the scheme around six weeks ago. According to reports in late April, the software now running on employee machines is part of what Meta calls the Model Capability Initiative. The program’s goal is to capture workers’ keystrokes, mouse movements and screenshots of their devices at various points, all so Meta can build AI agents that better understand how humans use computers. The irony of the people who help one of the internet’s most prolific data gluttons now being snooped on themselves is not lost on us. Leaked audio recordings of an internal Meta meeting from April 30 revealed CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s attitude toward capturing all this information when he said it was in pursuit of building advanced AI models quicker than competitors. “We are using this to feed a very large amount of content into the AI model, so that way it can learn how smart people use computers to accomplish tasks,” Zuckerberg purportedly said, per the recording leaked by worker advocacy group More Perfect Union. “I think that this is going to be a very big advantage if we can do it.” Throughout Zuck’s six-minute monologue, he repeatedly referred to Meta staff as “smart people". Whether this was to soften the blow of constant monitoring, to seem personable amid mass layoffs, or both, is anyone's guess. Zuck said Meta chose to capture data from its own people rather than outside contractors because they were smarter than the workers they could bring in on a temporary basis. The CEO confirmed Meta had no intention of using the data captured by the monitoring software to surveil employees’ activity or productivity, although he didn’t commit to saying the data would be anonymized. ®

Outrage has erupted in France after it emerged the main suspect in the case of an 11-year-old girl missing since last week had been repeatedly accused of sexually abusing children with no action taken.

A body was discovered on Thursday and formal identification was under way, an informed source said.

The cancellation of Cenk Uygur’s and Hasan Piker’s visas tells us that the home secretary’s powers to police speech are too broad

In August 1967, the activist Stokely Carmichael was banned from entering Britain. An ally of Martin Luther King Jr and head of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Carmichael was banned because that July he had visited London and given a rousing, militant speech about racism and black power at a leftwing festival in Camden alongside counterculture figures including the poet Allen Ginsberg and the philosopher Herbert Marcuse.

In the Commons, the Tory MP Patrick Wall – a member of the Monday Club, a pressure group that called for the “voluntary” repatriation of black people from Britain – claimed that Carmichael (later known as Kwame Ture) had been in Britain advocating racial violence. Wall asked Labour home secretary Roy Jenkins to rescind Carmichael’s visa. Jenkins agreed to do so. In retrospect, that decision – by a home secretary usually remembered as a liberal reformer – comes across as an act of petty authoritarianism, a more conservative generation trying to stop the circulation of subversive ideas associated with the 1960s left that it feared.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma (Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingssamenwerking, D66) zegt niet op de hoogte te zijn van een "schaduwdeal" binnen de coalitie naast de overeenkomst met PRO over extra geld voor ontwikkelingshulp. Volgens ingewijden zou D66 het wetsvoorstel strafbaarstelling verheerlijking terrorisme gaan steunen in ruil voor steun van de VVD voor het akkoord met PRO.

Het kabinet heeft met de grootste oppositiepartij afgesproken dat er dit jaar 380 miljoen euro extra naar hulp gaat. Sjoerdsma heeft de steun van PRO nodig om zijn begroting door de Eerste Kamer te loodsen. Zonder de toezegging zou de partij in de senaat tegenstemmen, waardoor de begroting het niet zou halen.

De Kamer besprak donderdag de afspraak die met PRO is gemaakt, maar werd verrast door de "schaduwdeal". Oppositiepartijen eisten daarop opheldering. In een kort briefje liet de minister weten dat het wetsvoorstel strafbaarstelling verheerlijking terrorisme "geen onderdeel" uitmaakt van het akkoord met PRO.

MAAGDENBURG (ANP/DPA) - Aanklagers in Maagdenburg hebben een levenslange gevangenisstraf geëist tegen Taleb A. om een aanslag op een kerstmarkt in de stad. Daarbij werden op 20 december 2024 zes mensen gedood en raakten circa driehonderd anderen gewond. Hij wordt berecht wegens zes moorden en pogingen tot moord.

De nu 51-jarige beklaagde reed met een auto in op de kerstmarkt. Hij komt uit Saudi-Arabië en werkte in Duitsland als arts. Hij was bekend bij de politie voor de aanslag door bedreigingen en hij uitte een diepe afkeer van de islamitische leer.

De dader plande de aanslag zorgvuldig. Een ideologisch motief ontbreekt. Volgens een psychiater betrokken bij het onderzoek heeft de beklaagde een narcistische persoonlijkheidsstoornis en een enorme behoefte aan aandacht.
