DEN HAAG (ANP) - Alle mensen die aan boord waren van een KLM-vliegtuig uit Johannesburg, waarin een Nederlandse vrouw met het hantavirus kortstondig aanwezig was, worden in de gaten gehouden, zegt minister Sophie Hermans (Volksgezondheid). "Die mensen zijn in beeld bij de GGD en daar is ook contact mee en er wordt gemonitord of er bij hen klachten ontstaan."

Het vliegtuig vertrok op 25 april uit Zuid-Afrika. De 69-jarige Nederlandse vrouw overleed een dag later. Zij zat eerder op het cruiseschip m/v Hondius.

Volgens Hermans wordt een plan gemaakt voor de tien Nederlanders die nog aan boord zijn van het cruiseschip dat dit weekend bij Tenerife aankomt. Daar gaan de mensen van boord.

"Het is het allerbelangrijkste dat de mensen die straks van het schip komen en terugkomen naar Nederland, goed in beeld houden of zij klachten hebben of klachten ontwikkelen", zegt Hermans. "En wat voor maatregelen kunnen we dan nemen om te zorgen dat zij niet nog met andere mensen in contact komen?" Of ze in isolatie moeten, kan de minister nog niet zeggen.

LONDEN (ANP) - De leider van de rechts-populistische partij Reform UK heeft verheugd gereageerd op de eerste uitslagen van de lokale verkiezingen in zijn land. Nigel Farage zei vrijdagochtend voor de camera dat de linkse Labourpartij van premier Keir Starmer wordt "weggevaagd" door Reform in gebieden die traditioneel gelden als Labourbolwerken. Hij voorspelde dat de conservatieven later op de dag aan de beurt zijn en sprak over een "historische verandering" in de Britse politiek.

Volgens Farage denken mensen bij politiek vaak aan links tegen rechts. Maar Reform wint volgens de politicus zowel op plekken die voorheen steevast conservatief stemden, als in gebieden "die sinds de Eerste Wereldoorlog worden gedomineerd door Labour".

In de loop van vrijdag worden meer uitslagen verwacht. "Ik denk echt dat het beste nog moet komen", jubelde de voormalige Europarlementariër, die ook bekendstaat als 'Mr Brexit' vanwege zijn jarenlange inzet voor het Britse vertrek uit de Europese Unie.

LOS ANGELES (ANP/RTR) - De Amerikaanse atlete Allyson Felix wil met de gemengde estafetteploeg op de 4x400 meter deelnemen aan de Olympische Spelen van 2028 in Los Angeles. De 40-jarige zevenvoudig olympisch kampioene kondigde onlangs haar rentree aan.

"Het zou voor mij ideaal zijn als ik de estafettegroep voor de gemengde estafette 4x400 meter haal", zei de meest succesvolle olympische atlete aller tijden, bij de Today Show. "Het is een grote opgave om terug op dat niveau te komen, maar ik kijk ernaar uit om het te proberen."

De in Los Angeles geboren Felix beëindigde haar carrière in 2022 met elf olympische medailles. Ze is al de oudste Amerikaanse atlete die meedeed aan een olympische estafette met haar goud van Tokio in 2021 op de 4x400 meter op 35-jarige leeftijd.

Swedish producer Olof Dreijer is best known for projects with his sibling Karin: namely their duo the Knife, plus Karin’s solo act Fever Ray, with whom he created four brilliant tracks on 2023 album Radical Romantics. For all that his beats on these records often had African-Caribbean-Latin syncopation, they also had a Scandinavian winter gloom.

Conversely, his debut solo album seems to crane upwards towards sunlight like flowers – and each of the tracks has a floral name. Dance heads will already be familiar with some of them (having appeared on EPs stretching back to 2023) but together they show quite how distinctive Dreijer’s own musical accent is: you can tell it’s him sometimes from just half a second of music.

BORK, BORK, BORK! There was a time when information boards were handwritten or paper-based affairs. Then departure information was shown on split-flap displays, which made a satisfying tick sound as the display changed. Pixel-based boards followed (we took a look at the excellent take-home-and-keep versions by UK Departure Boards in 2024, but, with the inevitability of death and taxes, Windows of course had to get involved, which brings us to this unhappy example spotted in a Northampton bus station by a Register reader. "This poor main display announcing bus times has been dying for a while," our reader said. "The time has been out by 3-4 minutes, meaning any passenger trying to get somewhere on time would have missed their bus. Now its time info software is not loading." The screen looks like Windows 10 is running in the background, but instead of helpful information for customers taking a bus journey, there's just the default Windows desktop background and a few forlorn icons. The screen has been fitted with spikes to prevent birds from perching and leaving deposits, no such luxury has been afforded to the software. Somebody crueler than us might suggest this is because no feathered friend would deign to perch atop Microsoft's finest, or that a healthy dose of bird droppings could only improve the appearance of Windows. The bus station in question is Northgate, a relatively recent addition to Northampton's architectural landscape, opened in 2014. Windows 10 was released the following year and now clings, limpet-like, to the information boards. Our reader's comment that the display appears to be wheezing its last is, of course, nothing to do with Microsoft's fervent wish that Windows 10 would hurry up and die so that it can notch up more Windows 11 users. The question is, would Northampton's avian chums be any keener on the display if it were running the latest and greatest? Certainly, Windows 11 could use some improvements. Even Microsoft has admitted as much, but we're not sure the rear of a bird is where those improvements should come from. ®
