Unpopular opinion incoming: there’s cool stuff brewing in the world. Microbots might one day mend spinal cords, a petri dish of brain cells can already play video games, and now the prospect of a new wonder: according to a New Yorker article on misophonia (the condition where unwanted noise triggers disproportionate, unpleasant cognitive and physiological reactions), a team of miracle workers are “using machine learning to develop headphones that … can quickly target and eliminate irksome audio”.

Now we’re talking! This project, led by Shyam Gollakota of the University of Washington’s Mobile Intelligence Lab, aims to develop headphones that selectively filter out triggering noises, leaving or enhancing the good sounds. Gollakota offers the example of sitting on a park bench, oblivious to loud talkers next to you but able to hear birdsong.

A briefcase-sized console with a large, sleek keypad, the MPC One drum machine is an eye-catching piece of kit. Nearly 40 women detained at Delaney Hall join striking men and outline demands ‘rooted in basic human rights’

Dozens of women detained inside the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in New Jersey announced their participation in a hunger and labor strike, advocates announced on Thursday.

The women, detained in unit 1 of the contentious privately run facility, also released a new list of demands. They are calling on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release women under 21, women with medical conditions and mothers. They are also demanding improved conditions inside the facility and for their immigration cases to proceed more quickly.

GRONINGEN (ANP) - De Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) hoeft voorlopig niet mee te betalen aan de compensatie voor in waarde gedaalde woningen in het aardbevingsgebied in Groningen die nog niet zijn verkocht. Het ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties bracht voor die compensatie uit 2020 en 2021 het jaar daarna ongeveer een half miljard euro in rekening bij NAM, maar dat was volgens de rechtbank in Groningen onterecht.

Voor de compensatie is gekeken naar de waarde van de woningen op 1 januari 2019. De Hoge Raad stelde in 2019 al dat dat meetmoment te vroeg is. Op dat moment was het niet "voldoende zeker dat significante schommelingen in de waarde van de woning die samenhangen met het risico op bodembeweging zullen uitblijven". Daar gaat de rechtbank in Groningen nu in mee.

"Als de minister vindt dat er inmiddels wel sprake is van een voldoende stabiele toestand om de waardedaling van onverkochte woningen te begroten, is het aan de minister om dat uit te leggen en te onderbouwen", staat in de uitspraak.
