Ronduit xenofoob! Dat was dan een citaat van parlementslid van de Zwitserse GroenLinks Delphine Klopfenstein, maar om uitgerekend dat in de kop te zetten is natuurlijk een redactionele keuze. Net als bij die andere DPG-krant Algemeen Dagblad trouwens, waar ze de kwestie koppen met: "Steenrijk Zwitserland vreest overbevolking". Door de titel te openen met "Steenrijk" wordt meteen gesuggereerd dat Zwitserland niet aan zijn humanitaire herverdelingsplicht voldoet door een plafond te willen op hoeveel mensen er in het land welkom zijn.
Afijn, we wenden ons tot de NOS: "Zwitserland is qua inwoneraantal een van de snelst groeiende Europese landen. Op dit moment wonen er ongeveer 9,1 miljoen mensen. In 2035 zijn dat er volgens prognoses 10 miljoen. Die groei komt vooral door migratie: veel arbeidsmigranten uit de EU trekken naar Zwitserland. De rechts-populistische SVP wil een stokje steken voor de - wat zij noemen - "bevolkingsexplosie" en nam het initiatief voor het referendum. De partij initieerde vaker referenda gericht tegen etnische minderheden. Zo mochten Zwitsers zich in het verleden uitspreken over een verbod op boerka's en minaretten."
In de peilingen lijkt het op een fotofinish aan te gaan komen. Hadden wij maar een land waar referendumpartij D66 niet voor de afschaffing van het (raadgevend) referendum had gestemd.

Even now, watercress maintains a reputation as a nutrient-rich superfood – the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has ranked it number 1 (with a perfect score of 100) on a list of “powerhouse” fruits and vegetables, and with good reason: it’s rich in vitamins C, K and A and antioxidants.

Sitting in a remote cabin earlier this year on the Hebridean isle of Harris, watching the fishing boats come and go in the little harbour, I felt the fog of the previous months finally beginning to clear. I kept thinking back to a cold November night, returning from Leeds to south London, when I finally admitted to myself that something needed to change.
I was exhausted from the long, frequent and often unrewarding round trips to visit my mum. At her care home in Leeds that autumn day, I had tried the usual tricks to summon a reaction from her – news of the grandkids, or re-reading poems and songs she’d written in her days as a primary school headteacher. But for the most part, she remained still and silent.

The artist has a staff of 23 in London – 11 studio assistants, nine people in the offices, three stone masons at a yard in Battersea – and some have been with him for decades. When he’s in town, everyone wants a piece (“It’s like The West Wing,” says one gallery rep).

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff is anticipating a close fight between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
DEN HAAG (ANP) - Net als voorgaande jaren zet de Werkgroep Waarheidsvinding MH17 zondag 298 lege stoelen tegenover de Russische ambassade in Den Haag. Elke stoel vertegenwoordigt een slachtoffer van de in 2014 neergeschoten vlucht MH17. Het toestel, onderweg van Amsterdam naar Maleisië, werd boven het oosten van Oekraïne neergehaald door pro-Russische separatisten.
Het is de negende keer dat nabestaanden dit stille protest houden. Ze vragen om blijvende aandacht voor de ramp en hopen dat Rusland verantwoordelijkheid neemt voor het neerschieten van het vliegtuig. Dat Rusland dat niet heeft gedaan, noemt de werkgroep respectloos en laf.
Aan boord van MH17 waren 196 Nederlanders. De lege stoelen staan zondag opgesteld zoals de rijen in het gecrashte toestel.
Een woordvoerder van de werkgroep laat weten dat er nog nooit enige reactie vanuit de Russische ambassade op het protest is gekomen.
