Fox will not face any sanction from Fifa for breaking the governing body’s advertising rules during the opening game of the World Cup between Mexico and South Africa last week.
The US broadcaster broke Fifa’s strict guidelines for showing commercials during hydration breaks on the first occasion they were in operation by returning to the live action 10 seconds after play had resumed during the second half at Mexico City Stadium.

It felt so typically Scottish that even rare success on the World Cup stage delivered such paradoxes of emotion and analysis. In Ireland, sporting glory is routinely cherished without contradiction. Scots have far more of a tendency to apply “ah, but” as an addendum. So it proved from Boston to Brora, where dissection of the 1-0 win over Haiti was far from straightforward. Rightly so.
Record books will show John McGinn’s scruffy goal earned the Scots just a fifth win at a World Cup finals. The claiming of a point against Morocco on Friday will, barring an extraordinary set of results elsewhere, seal Scotland a knockout berth for the first time. They haven’t even featured at this level since 1998. Any team within touching distance of heady times, rewarding a fantastic supporter base in the process, can hardly be castigated.

The UK supreme court has ended a system of safeguards around the human rights of disabled people that has been in place for over a decade, in its recent ruling on a legal question brought to it by the attorney general of Northern Ireland. In doing so, the judges have alarmed charities and disability advocates and pushed a little-discussed aspect of social care regulation into the spotlight.
Any person “under continuous supervision and control” and “not free to leave” the place where they live has until now been entitled to protections known as deprivation of liberty safeguards (Dols). These are part of the Mental Capacity Act, and include annual assessments. While the safeguards mostly apply to older people with dementia, children and younger adults with autism, learning disabilities and brain injuries are also covered.

Continue reading...ARLINGTON (ANP) - Honderden supporters van het Nederlands elftal hebben zich verzameld bij de Road to Six Flags Street bij het Choctaw Stadium in Arlington. Daar brengen Yuki, FeestDJRuud en Yves Berendse de fans in de stemming voor het eerste duel van Oranje op het WK voetbal met Japan, dat om 22.00 uur Nederlandse tijd in het Dallas Stadium begint.
Het is opgehouden met regenen en het is warm en benauwd in de regio Dallas, waar het zeven uur vroeger is dan in Nederland. De temperatuur loopt op richting de 30 graden en de gevoelstemperatuur ligt hoger. Enkele uren voor het begin van de wedstrijd gaan de Nederlandse supporters richting het overdekte stadion, dat tijdens het WK plaatsbiedt aan ruim 70.000 fans.
De Oranjebus, die onlangs na een lange oceaanreis aankwam in Texas, gaat daarbij voorop. De KNVB verwacht dat er duizenden Oranjesupporters meelopen in de fanwalk. Bij het EK in Duitsland waren twee jaar geleden bij de meeste wedstrijden zo'n 40.000 Nederlandse supporters bij het Oranjefeest in de speelsteden aanwezig. Voor de halve finale tegen Engeland in Dortmund liep dat aantal op tot 110.000.
Patrick uit Roosteren en Geert uit Asten zingen ook mee met muziek van Nederlandse artiesten. Ze waren zaterdagavond ook al op het fanfeest. "Het was weer ouderwets gezellig", vertelt Geert. "Er waren ook veel Amerikanen in Nederlandse shirts. Sommigen hadden familie in Nederland. Het is logisch dat er niet heel veel fans uit Nederland hiernaartoe komen. Ik heb een kaartje via de KNVB gekocht en 430 dollar betaald."
BERN (ANP) - Er komt geen bevolkingslimiet in Zwitserland. De Zwitserse bevolking heeft een voorstel daartoe verworpen in een referendum. 55 procent stemde tegen het plan.
Volgens het voorstel had het bevolkingsaantal in ieder geval tot 2050 onder de 10 miljoen moeten blijven. Als de Zwitsers hadden ingestemd, zou het Alpenland het eerste land ter wereld zijn geweest met zo'n limiet.
Het plan kwam van de rechts-conservatieve Zwitserse Volkspartij (SVP), uit zorg over immigratie en de toenemende druk op publieke diensten, infrastructuur en de woningmarkt. Volgens het voorstel zou de regering vooral op het gebied van asiel en gezinshereniging actie moeten ondernemen op het moment dat er meer dan 9,5 miljoen inwoners zouden zijn. Het land heeft nu een bevolking van 9,1 miljoen.
Tegenstanders vreesden juist voor een tekort aan buitenlandse arbeidskrachten. Ook zou de relatie met de EU onder druk komen te staan, omdat het vrije verkeer van personen aan banden zou worden gelegd.
Ooit draaide hij als dj in het nachtleven, spoot graffiti in de stad en sliep liever niet dan wel. Nu is Noël Deelen (40) vader van twee kinderen en betrapt hij zichzelf op discussies over PFAS, schermtijd en de aanschaf van een bakfiets van 8.000 euro. Met veel zelfspot en een flinke dosis Rotterdamse humor maakt hij liedjes over de midlifecrisis van zijn generatie.
