Linux kernel 7.1 sends Intel 486 support to silicon heaven

Linux kernel 7.1 is out, bringing significant changes that have been brewing for years – including the long-promised removal of support for Intel's 486 chip and its contemporaries. More than 140,000 lines of code have been chopped, with more facing deletion. Back in May 2025, we wrote that kernel 6.15 would drop 486 support, but that change was canceled at the last minute. Now it's in: in April, Penguin Emperor Linus Torvalds merged the big change that we described back then. More work is still ahead before this is completely gone, though. The Reg reported on the Russian Baikal family of CPUs way back in 2014, and again in 2021, but now Linux support for Baikal hardware has been removed, as has support for ancient bus mouse ports. We've also previously described 7.1's new NTFS driver, NTFSplus. It's optional for now, but South Korean filesystems boffin Namjae Jeon has revived and rewritten the original read-only NTFS driver from the 1990s. Most importantly, now it's able to write to NTFS volumes as well as read from them, and it's been modernized in line with current kernel filesystem methods. Linux Weekly News (LWN) explained the change in its January Filesystem Medley. Along with the new driver, there's also a new and improved version of the additional ntfsprogs utilities, called ntfsprogs-plus. This gives Linux the ability to repair some forms of NTFS corruption and errors – so we suspect that the various Linux-based live rescue media such as SystemRescue, GParted Live, and Grml may be quick to adopt kernel 7.1. This reminds us of what might have been the first time we reported on some of Namjae's filesystem finesse, when his code to repair exFAT volumes was added back in 2022. NTFSplus stands to completely replace the driver that Paragon Software donated back in 2020, as we described in April. It also seems likely that the old read-only NTFS driver will be removed too, as NTFSplus is based on that code. As it happens, exFAT support has been improved too. Contiguous space for files can be pre-allocated without zeroing the blocks first, making the process faster, and reducing fragmentation so storage media stays faster for longer. There are also improvements in ext4 and Btrfs handling. The swap memory subsystem has been overhauled, and should be faster. With RAM prices still high and thus renewed interest in memory and cache compression tools, we suspect that there's much more to do here. There are, of course, many smaller changes, some of which we've previously covered – including the removal of a whole collection of ancient communications devices. In 2022, our own Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols introduced the new io_uring API. In doing so, he also mentioned the new eBPF functionality, which we had days previously attempted to summarize. In 7.1, those two meet: now eBPF code can handle io_uring scheduling. The extensible kernel scheduler, which we've previously mentioned as an advanced feature of Oracle Linux's UEK-next kernel, has now been merged. Kernel 7.1 has improved power management for both AMD and Intel chips, as well as battery-status reporting on Apple M1 and M2-based laptops. The security of KVM virtualization on Arm has been tightened up, and so has that around accessing PIDs (process IDs) in the /proc virtual filesystem. The CIFS network filesystem – or SMB, as most of us call it – now has explicit support for creating temporary files. Intel FRED support debuted way back in kernel 6.9 but it's now on by default, and it helps performance on AMD processors as well. Kernel Rust support now needs Rust 1.85. For a deep dive into all the changes, as ever, LWN is the place to go. All this and much, much more is described in the articles on the first half of the 7.1 merge window and the rest of the 7.1 merge window. ®

Even if Iran benefits from this deal with Washington, any peace is likely to be temporary | Sina Toossi

The regime has learned it must extract concessions rather than promises from the US, but any permanent deal still depends on ending the war in Lebanon

To understand why Iran agreed to the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the United States to end the war, one must first understand how Iranian leaders believe they emerged from the war itself. For Iran’s leadership, this conflict did not begin with military strikes. It was the culmination of a years-long campaign of sanctions, covert operations, assassinations, economic pressure, and efforts to weaken and ultimately overthrow the Islamic Republic. Even episodes of domestic unrest, including the anti-government protests that culminated in the deadly January crackdown, are often understood in Tehran as part of this broader struggle. That worldview has profoundly shaped how Iranian decision-makers interpret both the war and its aftermath.

This perception is critical to understanding the confidence now evident in Tehran. The objectives of the war were hardly a mystery. A week into the war, Donald Trump demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender”. Both Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu openly called for regime change. The destruction of Iran’s missile capabilities, the dismantling of its regional influence, and the capitulation or collapse of the Islamic Republic were repeatedly presented as desired outcomes. None of those objectives were achieved.

The Homecoming of Joseph Grace review – poignant story of a life unmoored by war and exile

Marina Market, Cork
Michael Glenn Murphy is the accidental soldier and reluctant revolutionary reckoning with his past in Deirdre Kinahan’s touching drama of regret and return

A ferry terminal in steely morning light is the bare setting for Deirdre Kinahan’s poignant drama of return, as a man (Michael Glenn Murphy) in overcoat, suit and hat clutches a suitcase and considers his next move. In the 50 years since he left Ireland on a misguided impulse, Joseph Grace has never been back until now.

As a bus pulls up, he hesitates and turns away, assailed by memories. What follows in Louise Lowe’s atmospheric staging for Once Off Productions is a reckoning with Joseph’s past: a life swept up in 20th-century Europe’s upheavals, from the Western Front, to Roger Casement’s Irish Brigade of war prisoners in Germany in 1915, to the rise of Hitler.

‘At first, the idea does sound crazy’: meet the scientists trying to refreeze the Arctic

Sea ice is melting fast, worsening the climate crisis, but a bold attempt to rethicken it is showing early signs of success

“This would have been a wild dream a year ago,” says Andrea Ceccolini, standing on Arctic sea ice just a 4-mile snowmobile ride from the Inuit town of Cambridge Bay, northern Canada. To his left are sky blue ponds of meltwater created in the last few days by a sun that no longer sets in the high north summer. To his right, the sea ice is still a brilliant white, the light dusting of snow on top continuing to sparkle.

“It’s incredibly different, the boundary – I mean, you can point to it,” he says. The difference is the result of a bold geoengineering experiment being conducted by Ceccolini’s company, Real Ice, funded by the UK government.

Hackers Publish Knicks and Madison Square Garden Data Online

Hackers Publish Knicks and Madison Square Garden Data Online

Hackers have published data stolen from Madison Square Garden online for anyone to download, including what they say is customers’ personal information. A sample reviewed by 404 Media includes files mentioning specific sports teams, and specifically Knicks-related personalities, with fields such as “address,” “claim to fame,” “cost of talent,” and sometimes contact information for them or their representatives.

“It’s very simple. When you pay us, your data is deleted, and you move on with your life. When you don’t pay us, you get posted here, among other things,” a popup on the hackers’ website reads. The group publishing the data is Shiny Hunters, which has been responsible for an array of breaches over the years.

The data dump comes just days after the Knicks won the NBA Finals in five games against the Spurs. Although the breach likely happened before that—a spokesperson for the hacking group said the hack was on June 5—the Knicks’ victory has put a huge amount of attention on them and MSG.

Shiny Hunters published the MSG data on Tuesday. The full file download is nearly 45GB. A spokesperson of the group sent 404 Media a smaller sample of the data. One file includes what appear to be emails sent by customers to MSG and sometimes MSG’s response. One email is a man complaining about potentially being flagged by MSG’s facial recognition systems (MSG owner Jim Dolan has long spied on people inside his arenas, with MSG deploying various surveillance technologies, WIRED reported.)

The sample included a file with “Talent” in the filename, then a long list of high profile people in the sports world. It includes family members of MSG executives, former New York Knicks players and head coaches, and celebrities.

Ben Stiller, a huge Knicks fan and who was at MSG for the Knicks’ recent NBA finals games, is also included in the file. The contact information is an email address for Red Hour Films, the production company Stiller runs.

The file lists Stiller as “Low Risk,” although it's not clear from the file itself what that means. Only one person in the file is listed as “High Risk”: rapper A Boogie wit da Hoodie.

MSG did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Shiny Hunters website indicates MSG did not pay a demanded ransom.

In March MSG confirmed it had suffered a data breach which targeted users of Oracle’s E-Business Suite. In that hacking campaign, the Cl0p ransomware group was responsible, SecurityWeek reported. Those hackers named MSG specifically as a victim in November 2025, the report added.

Krijg nou wat. NPO wil graag UW MENING
