Huisarts Rob Elens, die tijdens de coronapandemie in opspraak raakte omdat hij eigenstandig medicatie voorschreef die niet bedoeld was voor coronainfecties, vindt dat hij door de media is neergezet als een "kwakzalver". Dat heeft volgens hem een grote impact gehad op hemzelf en zijn gezin. De Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd (IGJ) sommeerde hem meermaals te stoppen met zijn alternatieve behandeling. Die benadering vond hij "intimiderend", zei hij tijdens zijn verhoor door de parlementaire enquêtecommissie.

Elens gebruikte bij wijze van proef een cocktail van malariamedicijnen, antibiotica en zink. Die was volgens hem effectief, want hij zag bij tien patiënten snelle verbetering. Maar de inspectie waarschuwde voor gevaarlijke bijwerkingen zoals hartritmestoornissen. Elens geeft toe dat de resultaten van zijn behandeling niet wetenschappelijk significant waren, "maar wel opvallend".

De arts kreeg een boete van 3000 euro omdat hij de middelen voorschreef voor corona. De hoogste bestuursrechter halveerde die boete later, maar hield staande dat de boete terecht was.

NEW YORK (ANP) - Wall Street is woensdag licht hoger geopend in aanloop naar het rentebesluit van de Amerikaanse centrale bank later op de dag. Naar verwachting laat de Federal Reserve de rente dan onveranderd. SpaceX (plus 3 procent) ging verder omhoog, waarmee werd voortgeborduurd op de koerswinsten sinds de beursgang van het ruimtevaart- en AI-bedrijf van Elon Musk afgelopen vrijdag.

Het is het eerste rentebesluit van de nieuwe Fed-voorzitter Kevin Warsh. Hij is de opvolger van Jerome Powell, die geregeld felle kritiek kreeg van president Donald Trump omdat de Fed de rente niet sneller verlaagde. Warsh zal ook een toelichting geven op het rentebesluit die nauwlettend gevolgd zal worden voor opmerkingen over het toekomstige beleid. Mogelijk kan de Fed later dit jaar de rente gaan verhogen om de gestegen inflatie aan te pakken.

De Dow-Jonesindex stond kort na de opening 0,1 procent hoger op 52.055 punten. De S&P 500 steeg 0,1 procent tot 7517 punten en de technologiegraadmeter Nasdaq won 0,3 procent op 26.448 punten. Op dinsdag toonden de hoofdgraadmeters in New York een gemengd beeld na de sterke stijging op maandag door optimisme onder beleggers over de voorlopige vredesdeal tussen Iran en de Verenigde Staten.

SpaceX

Sinds de recordbeursgang van SpaceX is het aandeel ruim 50 procent in waarde gestegen. Op dinsdag haalde SpaceX al Amazon in als het op vier na meest waardevolle beursgenoteerde bedrijf ter wereld en nu komt Microsoft in het vizier. Om Microsoft in te halen moet de marktwaarde van SpaceX met nog eens 150 miljard dollar toenemen, aldus persbureau Bloomberg.

De chipfondsen stonden eveneens bij de winnaars. Broadcom, Micron Technology, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Intel en Nvidia werden tot 2,6 procent hoger gezet. Carmax verloor bijna 7 procent. De verkoper van gebruikte auto's maakte woensdag zijn kwartaalcijfers bekend.

De olieprijzen gingen omhoog na de sterke dalingen eerder deze week. Een vat Amerikaanse olie werd 1,1 procent duurder op 76,90 dollar en Brentolie klom 1,2 procent tot 79,94 dollar per vat.

GRIENDTSVEEN (ANP) - Het herstellen van de natuur in de Peel door onder meer te zorgen voor voldoende water, is "eigenlijk belangrijker dan stikstof", zegt landbouwminister Jaimi van Essen (D66). De Peel is een van de gebieden waar de natuur er het slechtst aan toe is, onder meer door stikstof en verdroging. Net als voor de Veluwe is daar woensdag een akkoord ondertekend over een regionale aanpak voor natuurherstel en ervoor te zorgen dat er weer vergunningen verleend kunnen worden.

Van Essen heeft, net als voor de Veluwe, 300 miljoen euro van het vorige kabinet ter beschikking voor het gebied. 110 miljoen euro is voor boeren die willen verduurzamen of een ander type bedrijf willen gaan runnen. Zo'n 50 miljoen euro is voor boeren die willen stoppen of verhuizen. De rest van het geld is bedoeld voor natuurbeheer. De totale pot wordt verdeeld over de provincies Brabant en Limburg, ieder krijgt 150 miljoen euro.

Op de Veluwe is afgesproken hoeveel stikstof er rondom het natuurgebied verminderd moet worden de komende jaren. Dat soort afspraken zijn in Brabant en Limburg niet gemaakt. Wat de afspraken betekenen voor boeren, ondernemers en inwoners van de regio moet nog bezien worden. Gebiedsmanager Niels Aten legt uit dat dit "zo ongeveer op perceelsniveau" gaat gebeuren. Het overheidsgeld is dan bijvoorbeeld om stukken grond te ruilen tussen boeren die hun bedrijf anders willen inrichten. Afhankelijk van wat boeren willen en wat er aan de natuur moet gebeuren, worden de plannen concreet.

De plannen voor meer water in de natuur zullen betekenen dat het water in sloten en beken hoger zal komen te staan. Dat betekent voor boeren dat ze bijvoorbeeld minder goed aardappelen kunnen telen of de koeien later naar buiten kunnen.

Donald Trump also denied (again) that the memorandum of understanding includes a $300bn fund for Iran, which reportedly would be paid by the Gulf states.

“It’s false,” Trump told reporters as he sat alongside Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. “You can invest if you want. What am I going to do, say no one is ever allowed to invest? We’re not investing, we’re not putting up 10 cents and people can decide to do it. That’s up to them.”

In short, what it does is it opens the strait of Hormuz immediately … It also provides a framework whereby if the Iranians give us what we need – on stopping the funding of terrorism, on no longer pursuing a nuclear weapon – then they can get some benefits, be re-invited into the world economy.

A British woman on a yacht in the Channel near which a Russian warship fired warning shots has told how she does not want the incident to be blown out of proportion, saying: “We don’t want world war three to start because of this.”

Jane Kelvey, 69, and her husband, Alan, 70, were on their yacht, Bright Future, travelling from the south coast of England towards France on Tuesday when they came into close contact with the Admiral Grigorovich, a 409ft Russian frigate.

The European Commission has declined (PDF) to propose a law requiring publishers to keep discontinued video games playable, despite the Stop Killing Games initiative collecting nearly 1.3 million verified signatures. Instead, it plans to develop a voluntary industry code covering end-of-life transparency and preservation. Dextero reports: The Commission's full communication said a legal obligation to keep games playable, as requested by the initiative, "would not be proportionate." It cited concerns about intellectual property rights, confidential business information, publisher costs, and potential cybersecurity or safety risks once games are no longer supported. The code of conduct could include more transparent storefront labeling about possible game discontinuation, along with more partnerships between publishers and cultural heritage institutions to preserve games. However, it would not legally require publishers to provide offline patches, private server tools, or other methods for players to continue accessing games after official support ends. The Commission also argued that existing EU consumer law already provides some safeguards, including requirements around transparency, contract duration, termination conditions, and possible refunds if a shutdown conflicts with the agreement or a consumer's reasonable expectations.

[...] Despite the setback, Stop Killing Games has said it is not ending its push for legislation. In a response posted after the Commission's decision, the official Stop Killing Games account said the outcome was "not unexpected" and claimed the campaign had already prepared for the result. The group said it is now pushing for members of the European Parliament to amend Stop Killing Games into the Digital Fairness Act instead. "We can move on without the Commission and their non-decision," the group said, referencing earlier comments from Accursed Farms creator Ross Scott.

Wie goed kijkt, ziet dat onvrede onder boeren al smeult.

Cisco has updated a February security advisory, adding another product to the list of those affected by the maximum-severity CVE-2026-20127. Switchzilla made a small amendment to the original advisory on Tuesday evening, noting that Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Validator, formerly vBond, was also among the boxes attackers could pop open. Readers may remember the fuss over CVE-2026-20127 (10.0) a few months ago. The make-me-admin improper authentication flaw prompted a Five Eyes alert since attackers could essentially gain persistent root access to all vulnerable instances. In other words, it's a far-from-ideal situation that could could create espionage opportunities, given the prevalence of Cisco's SD-WAN offerings in Western networks. Cisco said at the time that attackers could exploit CVE-2026-20127 to gain admin rights, access NETCONF, and reconfigure the SD-WAN fabric, before exploiting CVE-2022-20775 (7.8), a path traversal flaw discovered in September 2022, to gain root access. Cisco Talos, the company's threat intel arm, posited that the bug could have been exploited for as long as three years by the time it was discovered. Talos attributed the exploitation activity to a group it tracks as UAT-8616, whose activity dates back to at least 2023, according to its researchers' estimates. No one has formally attributed UAT-8616 to a specific country or group of individuals, but experts say that it is a highly sophisticated outfit that has a history of targeting critical infrastructure sectors. Ollie Whitehouse, NCSC-UK's CTO, said at the time: "Our new alert makes clear that organizations using Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN products should urgently investigate their exposure to network compromise and hunt for malicious activity, making use of the new threat hunting advice produced with our international partners to identify evidence of compromise. "UK organizations are strongly advised to report compromises to the NCSC, and to apply vendor updates and hardening guidance as soon as practicable to reduce the risk of exploitation." The Register asked Cisco for more information, but it did not immediately respond. Customers should not have to make any new changes, provided that they upgraded their software to a fixed version across all systems when the advisory was first published in February, not just SD-WAN Controller and SD-WAN Manager. The update comes weeks after Cisco disclosed another zero-day affecting Catalyst SD-WAN, suggesting that it had been exploited for at least a week at the time. Tracked as CVE-2026-20245, it marked the sixth SD-WAN flaw disclosed this year, and the second to be exploited as a zero-day in as many months. ®
