There was a time in my life when Campo Viejo Tempranillo was as essential as milk or bread; my flatmates and I designated it our “house wine”’. The year was 2011, we wore a lot of elasticated statement belts and lived opposite a corner shop by Brixton prison. Like us, the wine was young, fruity and there for a good time.

Campo Viejo remains one of the more obvious choices for a last-minute bottle of red. Even better is Muriel Tempranillo Rioja at the Co-op, which has all the dark red fruit and vanilla you might expect from young rioja. These days, I’d freshen up either of them with a blast in the fridge, or mix with lemonade for that emblematic Spanish summer cocktail, tinto de verano.

The Côte d’Ivoire striker Elye Wahi, who is being investigated for alleged fixing, has not been authorised to travel to Canada for his team’s World Cup match against Germany, the Côte d’Ivoire football federation (FIF) said on Thursday.

The FIF said Wahi would not be able to travel with the squad for Saturday’s game in Toronto because “the necessary administrative authorisations for his entry into Canadian territory could not be obtained at this stage”.

The very early starters did get a couple of holes in at least. No-one is under par though with the eight-way tie for the lead on evens including Jackson Suber and amateur Ethan Fang. Last June, American Fang won the 130th Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s. Both have played just a single hole. Fellow Americans James Nicholas and Caleb Surratt occupy the top two slots on the leaderboard after both managed to par the first two holes.

Niemand wil iets met ze te maken hebben, dikwijls moeten ze camerabewaking optuigen om te voorkomen dat hun eigendom niet wordt gevandaliseerd of gestolen. Wie het vervolgens waagt om aangifte te doen, wordt weggehoond en weggestuurd. Het loopt nu dusdanig de spuigaten uit dat verzekeraars WEIGEREN leden van de bakfietsgemeenschap nog langer van een verzekering te voorzien, omdat die krengen zo vaak gejat worden dat het niet meer lucratief is. Althans, dat blijkt uit een brief die een kuchende bakfiets(st)rijder in een regenjas ons toestopte (screenshot na de breek). En dan hebben we het over een verzekeraar die notabene "als missie heeft om consumenten die een waardevol product hebben aangeschaft te ontzorgen door deze te verzekeren tegen risico's zoals diefstal en beschadiging." Lulkoek! Jullie willen alleen maar geld verdienen over de rug van de bakfietsgemeenschap, als het eropaan komt laten jullie ze als een baksteen vallen. Het is werkelijk een bloody schande. Jarenlang is deze mensen voorgehouden dat ze een milieuvriendelijk alternatief voor de auto gebruikten, dat bovendien leuk was voor de kinderen en ideaal voor boodschappen. Nu puntje bij paaltje komt laat iedereen ze in de steek. Waar blijft godverdomme het noodfonds voor bestolen leden van de bakfietsgemeenschap?

People of a certain age sometimes like to reminisce about how software in the old days was somehow more responsive and more efficient on far less powerful hardware. Microsoft's approach was to take its software binaries and optimize the heck out of them. Former Microsoft engineer Dave Plummer spilled the beans on the practice, confirming that the company used an internal application called Basic Block Tool (BBT) – known internally as Microsoft Lego – to shuffle the internals of binaries to speed execution. Plummer's recollections go back to the '90s, when his first NT development system ran on a paltry 12 MB of RAM, but software was relentlessly growing in size. A binary might have 10 MB of code, but the startup path only needed 300 KB of it. "But if those 300 KB are sprinkled like Parmesan across 10 MB of binary, then the loader and the memory manager have to touch far more pages than the actual executed code would suggest," Plummer said. And if a trip to disk was needed to page the code in and out, the performance impact could be disastrous. Hence BBT, through which Microsoft ran a binary and came up with something that was functionally the same, but a good deal more performant. The binary was effectively defragmented as related code was lumped together. Similar techniques have, of course, persisted even as computational power has increased. BOLT, for example, can speed up large applications by optimizing the layout of binaries. Then there was HP's Dynamo [PDF], which could optimize code at runtime. This approach is not without risk. Tinkering with a binary is not for the faint of heart, but Microsoft had an incentive to wring every last bit of performance from systems. "Windows and Office were large native code products running on constrained machines, and the wins were user-visible," Plummer explained. "If you could reduce the number of pages touched during boot or shell startup, users felt it. If you could make common application paths fit into fewer memory pages, multitasking got better. "If you could keep hot code out of the swap file, the whole system felt less like it was dragging a refrigerator through wet cement." As with Raymond Chen's recent war story regarding binary translation and code rerolling at Microsoft, Redmond's engineers were laser-focused on performance. Whether that same focus survives in some of today's software is another matter. Plummer thinks his past efforts remain applicable. "Modern software has the same problem at a different scale," he said. "The binaries are much larger. The services are distributed. The frameworks are deeper. The machines are faster, but the dependency graphs are absurd. "And we still discover over and over again that locality matters as it always does. So put the hot data together. Put the hot code together. Keep the common path small. Push rare paths away. "Don't make the CPU fetch a haystack when it only needs the needle." ®

DEN HAAG (ANP) - Tussen Eindhoven en Brussel moet een directe trein rijden, vindt de Tweede Kamer. Onder een motie die ChristenUnie-Kamerlid Pieter Grinwis woensdagavond indiende, staan genoeg andere fracties voor een meerderheid. Ze willen dat er daarnaast elk uur een tweede snelle trein tussen Rotterdam en Brussel rijdt.

Momenteel zijn er behalve de Eurostar twee treinverbindingen tussen Rotterdam en Brussel: de Eurocity Direct, die vertrekt uit Amsterdam Zuid, en de Eurocity die vanuit Rotterdam vertrekt en tussendoor vaker stopt. De ene trein haalt de andere onderweg naar Brussel in, legt Grinwis uit aan het ANP. "Feitelijk is er dus maar één verbinding met Brussel per uur, als je de Eurostar buiten beschouwing laat." De Eurostar rijdt verder door Europa en kost doorgaans fors meer.

Grinwis stelt voor om de Eurocity niet meer naar Rotterdam maar naar Eindhoven te laten rijden. In ruil daarvoor zou Rotterdam elk uur een tweede Eurocity Direct moeten krijgen. "Dat is voor beide steden gunstiger."
