GENÈVE (ANP/AFP) - De klimaatchef van de Verenigde Naties linkt de extreme temperaturen die Europa teisteren aan klimaatverandering. "De zware hittegolf in Europa draagt onmiskenbaar de sporen van de klimaatcrisis", zegt topman Simon Stiell in een verklaring. "Het is de zoveelste tol die we betalen voor de uitstoot van fossiele brandstoffen die onze planeet doet opwarmen."

In Europese landen sneuvelen deze week temperatuurrecords en worden hittewaarschuwingen afgegeven. Ook in Nederland loopt de temperatuur flink op. Stiell waarschuwt dat de situatie alleen maar erger zal worden als landen vasthouden aan fossiele brandstoffen. "Zolang de mensheid kolossale hoeveelheden steenkool, olie en gas blijft verbranden, zal de extreme hitte alleen maar toenemen."

Scouts are introducing badges in content creation, digital communication and online safety after consulting nearly 3,000 teenagers who said they wanted skills to help them navigate a world increasingly shaped by AI, social media and digital technology.

The new Explorer Scout badges, part of the Scout movement’s first major overhaul in almost 25 years, will require 14- to 18-year olds to explore how digital communities shape opinion, create online campaigns, investigate digital footprints and design toolkits to help others stay safe online.

Oil prices have fallen below levels seen before the Iran war started in late February as more oil tankers exited the strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude, the global benchmark, fell to a low of $72.24 a barrel on Thursday, slightly lower than the day before the US and Israel launched missile attacks on Tehran on 28 February. Prices have fallen more than 20% this month.

Australian woman Leah Stewart no longer in critical condition but doesn’t yet have use of her hand

A woman who was attacked by a shark at Sydney’s Coogee’s beach is no longer in a critical condition and “remembers the whole event in detail”, her brother has said.

Leah Stewart’s brother, Joshua, provided the update on a fundraising site on Thursday, writing that it was “amazing to hear from her so much sooner than anyone expected” and that she had been “overjoyed” to see her daughter for the first time since the incident almost two weeks ago.

Was gisteren weer een vrolijke bedoening (ja wacht maar tot ze verliezen) in de Haagse Schilderswijk na de wedstrijd van Nederland-B. Er staat wel een beetje popo in de buurt, maar dat zijn van die lulletjes met helmpjes op fietsjes. Die durven niks te doen, want dan worden ze uitgelachen & in hun gezicht getuft. Omdat Marokko met 4-2 heeft gewonnen van Haïti is dat land in de nacht van maandag op dinsdag waarschijnlijk de volgende tegenstander van Oranje - hoeven wij vannacht alleen nog maar effe een paar goaltjes te maken tegen het armzalige Tunesië. Burgemeesters zijn nu al doodsbang - dat wordt lachen!
