MAAGDENBURG (ANP/AFP) - Een man die in 2024 inreed op een drukke kerstmarkt in Maagdenburg, heeft in Duitsland een levenslange gevangenisstraf opgelegd gekregen. Er vielen destijds zes doden en honderden gewonden.
Bestuurder Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmohsen, een Saudische psychiater, kon destijds worden opgepakt toen hij zijn zwaar beschadigde huurwagen verliet. Hij ontkende dat hij met opzet mensen had geraakt, maar de autoriteiten noemden dat ongeloofwaardig.
De man werd vervolgd voor de moord op zes mensen en 338 pogingen tot moord. De overleden slachtoffers zijn een jongetje van 9 en vijf vrouwen. Aanklagers hadden levenslang geëist tegen de automobilist.
Tijdelijke rechtszaal
Voor de zaak moest een grote tijdelijke rechtszaal worden gebouwd bij Maagdenburg. Zo konden honderden slachtoffers, nabestaanden en anderen de zaak bijwonen. Er zijn meer dan honderd getuigen opgevoerd.
Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmohsen stond bekend als een islamcriticus met uiterst rechtse sympathieën. Een expert oordeelde dat hij een narcistische persoonlijkheidsstoornis heeft, maar wel toerekeningsvatbaar is.
Motief
De autoriteiten denken dat frustratie na een verloren rechtszaak en mislukte aangiftes het motief waren voor de aanslag. Een aanklager verweet de man geen enkel berouw te hebben getoond.
De kerstmarkt in Maagdenburg ging een jaar na de aanslag weer open. Toen waren er betonblokken neergezet en stond er gewapende politie klaar. Sommige bezoekers vertelden dat het nu meer op een fort leek.

Afijn, volgens Trump is de VS nu aan het onderhandelen vanuit een positie van 'pure kracht', en dus kondigt hij maar weer eens aan dat er waarschijnlijk een akkoord met Iran aankomt.
Ondertussen meldt de Iraanse BuZa-minister Seyed Abbas Araghci zich maar weer eens, om te verkondigen dat het martelaarschap van Khamenei senior 'nooit zal worden vergeven of vergeten'.
Tussen de bedrijven door gaan in Washington vandaag Israël en Libanon in gesprek, over een manier om het vechten aldaar duurzaam te beëindigen. Netanyahu is aan de voorkant vast duidelijk: zijn troepen blijven voorlopig in zuidelijk Libanon, en zullen dat 'zolang als nodig' blijven doen. Daar valt kortom nog wat winst te behalen, maar mogelijk is akkoordmeneer Trump in staat beide partijen nader tot elkaar te brengen.

With Glastonbury in a fallow year, anyone missing their dose of West Country bacchanalia will have to settle for this handsome documentary, remastered in 4K and rereleased for its 30th anniversary. Shot at the 1993 festival, it serves as a heady curative to today’s digital saturation: no mobile phones, no corporate logos, just tens of thousands of people unselfconsciously having it large in one of those blessed years when the sun god smiled on the Glastonbury populace. If the film wasn’t time-stamped enough by the copious tie-dye, white-boy dreads and acid jazz on display, a youthful Dexter Fletcher seems to feature in approximately 18% of the footage.
The film is less purposefully structured than Julien Temple’s 2006 tribute Glastonbury, whose multi-decade collage was corralled into thematic sections. Directors William Beaton, Robin Mahoney and Matthew Salkeld simply ride it out with the punters on a chronological three-day stint, alternating meanderings through the camp with choice excerpts from the stage. There are welcome reunions with acts unlikely to have bothered your Spotify feed of late: an imperial rendition by Stereo MCs of their big hit Connected, a lithe, pre-fame Verve slinking through Gravity Grave, and a cavorting Porno for Pyros. With the cacophony bottled in frequently used split-screen, eavesdropped snatches of conversation float over the soundtrack. One Monty Python-drunk wag hawks imaginary wares to passersby: “Lark’s vomit! Pig’s bladders!”

On 19 June, the New York Times published an article on the hostility toward minority members of the military at the Department of Defense and the blocking of several promotions of minority, non-male officers despite their decorations and accomplishments. The Times attributed the ideological climate to defense secretary Pete Hegseth, who, according to the newspaper, is waging a “war on diversity”. Four days earlier, California governor Gavin Newsom said that the Department of Justice was investigating him and his wife for alleged financial irregularities, adding to the speculation long held that Donald Trump’s administration would spend its second term weaponizing the government to settle scores.
As Hegseth attacks race, gender and “diversity” through the military with the aim of restoring an unchallenged and unquestioned white, Christian leadership, and the justice department harasses Trump’s political opponents, the DoJ used the San Francisco Giants’ honoring of pride month to open yet another front in what the president sees as a culture war against white men. The Giants incurred additional damage, all of it embarrassingly self-inflicted. Their milky, cowardly response betrayed their own city, a large part of their fanbase and the organization’s history.
