UTRECHT (ANP) - Vorig jaar zijn alweer meer pleeggezinnen ermee gestopt dan er begonnen. De druk op de pleegzorg neemt toe. Dat staat in een maandag verschenen factsheet van Jeugdzorg Nederland. Door het tekort aan pleegouders wordt het steeds moeilijker om een goede plek te vinden voor kinderen die korte tijd of langdurig niet thuis kunnen wonen.

Vorig jaar woonden 18.341 kinderen voor korte of langere tijd bij pleegouders. Dat zijn er 1577 minder dan een jaar eerder. Jeugdzorg Nederland benadrukt dat die daling niet betekent dat minder kinderen hulp nodig hebben. Eind 2025 wachtten bijna 900 kinderen op een plekje in een pleeggezin, net als het jaar daarvoor.

Door het tekort aan pleegouders moet naar andere vormen worden gezocht, zoals een gezinshuis, een woonvorm met meerdere kinderen. Maar juist in een pleeggezin kan een kind "zo gewoon mogelijk opgroeien, met nabijheid, aandacht en steun", stelt Jeugdzorg Nederland.

DEN HAAG (ANP) - In Nederland werd vorig jaar 2 procent minder stikstof uitgestoten door veehouders dan een jaar eerder. Met bijna 440 miljoen kilo kwam de uitstoot net iets onder het nieuwe stikstofplafond voor 2025 uit, meldt het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) op basis van voorlopige cijfers. Het plafond werd in 2024 verlaagd na afspraken met de Europese Commissie over de afbouw van de mestproductie.

De afname was zichtbaar in alle sectoren van de veeteelt. De grootste bijdrage kwam van de rund- en melkveehouderij, waar de stikstofuitscheiding door mest met meer dan 6 miljoen kilo terugliep ten opzichte van 2024. Na de afschaffing van het melkquotum in 2015 groeide de melkveestapel eerst, maar door maatregelen om die te verkleinen en door stikstofarmer veevoer neemt de uitstoot al enkele jaren af.

Bij varkens daalde de stikstofuitscheiding met zo'n 2 miljoen kilo en ook pluimvee produceerde minder stikstof. Volgens het CBS komt dat vooral doordat er minder dieren werden gehouden. Ook de uitstoot van mest van ander vee, zoals schapen, geiten en paarden, nam af.

Nieuw plafond

De totale fosfaatuitscheiding lag vorig jaar 4 procent lager dan een jaar eerder, maar bleef met bijna 142 miljoen kilo nog boven het nieuwe plafond van 135 miljoen kilo. Vooral de melkvee-, varkens- en pluimveesector produceerden minder fosfaat, onder meer door kleinere veestapels en fosfaatarmer voer.

Sinds 2015 is de stikstofuitstoot van de hele veestapel gedaald met bijna 12 procent. De uitscheiding van fosfaat is in die periode afgenomen met meer dan 21 procent.

As Britain reels from Europe’s worst ever heatwave, many households are, for the first time, seriously considering air conditioning. Leftists have often been critical of AC, pointing out that there are cheaper, more ecological ways to combat severe heat. But with decades of underinvestment leaving the UK dismally unprepared to handle further heatwaves, is it time to rethink the progressive position on air con?

Like many new technologies, air conditioning can bring significant benefits but also real harms, contributing to external air temperatures and global emissions. Dogmatically denying these harms, as AC boosters tend to, is unhelpful, but likewise refusing to explore how mechanical air-cooling systems could play a more productive role in progressive climate adaptation is just as blinkered.

If bread is the main staple of Lebanese cooking, grains and legumes are next, and there is hardly a meal without one or the other. Bulgur wheat is the preferred grain, especially for rural communities of all confessions; in the old days, they grew their own wheat to make it, harvesting, threshing and parboiling the wheat before drying it in the sun and sending it to the local mill to be ground into fine and coarse grades to last the household until the next harvest. In fact, given the sheer number of recipes across the country, I could have easily devoted a whole book to Lebanese recipes for grains alone.
